No current, universal winner is established by the comparisons discussed here, so judge the exact model you plan to buy rather than relying on a brightness number or a family name.
Start with what you need to see in direct sun
When you use a phone as a camera outdoors, the display is part of the camera experience. You need to see the scene well enough to compose it, check focus and exposure, and review a shot. A bright panel can help, but reflections, viewing angle, the camera app’s interface, and how the phone behaves in strong light also affect whether the viewfinder is usable.

That is why a manufacturer’s peak-brightness figure is not, by itself, a reliable way to pick a phone for beach photography. Peak claims and independent measurements can use different test conditions, and neither number alone tells you how easy the live camera preview will be to see in actual sunshine.

In a hands-on sunshine comparison published on June 14, 2025, TechRadar writer Philip Berne looked at the iPhone 16 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, OnePlus 13, and Google Pixel 9 Pro. Berne reported that the iPhone 16 Pro Max was easiest to see for brightness, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s anti-glare coating notably reduced reflections. Treat this as the result of that author’s test, not a permanent or universal ranking: it covers four specific phones and does not establish which current model is best for every user.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The comparison is useful because it shows two different advantages. A display that gets very bright can improve visibility; a surface that cuts reflections can also make the viewfinder easier to read without relying only on more brightness. When possible, try a phone outside or near a bright window. Open the camera, point it in several directions, and check whether you can frame a subject at the angles you normally hold the phone. A showroom demonstration under indoor lighting cannot settle how the display will feel on a reflective beach.
How to interpret the published brightness numbers
The figures below come from different measurement contexts. The manufacturer claims and TechRadar’s lab results should not be treated as like-for-like readings of sustained brightness in everyday camera use.
| Phone | Manufacturer figure reported by TechRadar | TechRadar lab result | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 16 Pro Max | 2,000 nits, stated high-brightness mode claim | 1,500 nits maximum in HDR lab testing | The claim and the HDR test result refer to different contexts; neither is a direct measure of every outdoor viewfinder situation. |
| Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra | 2,600 nits, stated peak-brightness claim | 1,800 nits maximum in TechRadar’s test, recorded only when a flashlight was directed at the sensor | The flashlight-to-sensor condition is specific to that lab test. Do not read the result as a normal, sustained screen level. |
These are dated figures reported in TechRadar’s June 2025 comparison. They do not establish how other models perform, and the 2,000-, 2,600-, 1,500-, and 1,800-nit figures are not interchangeable. A useful buying decision combines a comparable test with a practical viewfinder check, including reflections and viewing angle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

If you can handle a candidate phone before buying, test it as a camera rather than only looking at a bright home screen. Open the camera preview, aim toward a bright area and then toward a darker subject, and see whether you can still make out the framing. Tilt the handset as you would when taking a landscape or group photo; reflections may change as the angle changes. Try reviewing a captured image as well as composing one, since the display needs to work for both tasks.
Pay attention to whether you can distinguish the edges of the scene and place a subject where you want it, not just whether the panel looks vivid. If the phone is uncomfortable to hold at the angle that reduces glare, that matters too. This simple check does not replace controlled testing, but it helps answer the practical question: can you see enough of the live preview to take the pictures you want?

Choose camera coverage for the subjects you will photograph
Outdoor photography is not one camera task. A landscape, a group on the sand, and a distant boat call for different framing options. Before comparing camera specifications, consider what you are likely to photograph and whether you want to change lenses or perspectives without moving closer to the subject.
- Main camera: This is the everyday starting point for people, scenery, and quick snapshots. Compare independent photo evaluations if image quality is the deciding factor; a megapixel count alone does not establish which phone produces the better image.
- Ultra-wide camera: Useful when a landscape or a group will not fit comfortably in the main camera’s view. Check whether the model actually includes a separate ultra-wide camera and how wide its field of view is; specifications vary by model.
- Optical telephoto: Helpful for framing distant subjects without relying only on a digital crop. Check what optical zoom or telephoto capability the exact model offers, rather than assuming that a phone family provides the same camera arrangement throughout.
- Stabilization and shutter response: These affect how practical a camera feels when you are hand-holding the phone or trying to catch a moment. Look for independent comparisons or hands-on evaluations for the exact model; the available specifications do not establish a cross-phone winner on either point.
For a concrete example of why exact specifications matter, Apple’s September 2026 iPhone Duo announcement lists a 48MP main camera, an optical-quality 2x telephoto, and a 48MP ultra-wide. Those are manufacturer-published specifications and claims for that announced product. They describe camera coverage, but do not independently prove that its photos are better than a competitor’s.

Use the same discipline with any other phone: verify the exact model and regional specification, then look for independent image comparisons if you care about color, detail, low-light results, focus behavior, or motion. The listed camera hardware can tell you what framing options are available; it cannot settle all of those image-quality questions by itself.
Match the lenses to the trip, not just the spec sheet
Think through the pictures you are likely to make. For a broad coastline or a group that cannot easily gather closer, an ultra-wide view may be more useful than a high-resolution number on the main camera. For a distant subject, check that the phone offers optical telephoto coverage at the framing you want; a phone’s family name alone does not tell you which lenses are fitted to a particular version. If most of your pictures are casual snapshots at normal distance, the main camera may matter more than specialist reach.
For each camera view you expect to use, seek sample photos or independent comparisons from the exact model. Look for the kinds of scenes you care about, and check whether the evaluator discusses handling, focus, motion, and the transition between camera views. A list of lenses tells you what framing choices exist, while independent results help assess how those choices work in actual pictures. Neither a megapixel figure nor a single sample settles performance across every subject and lighting condition.

Do not treat water resistance as seawater protection
An ingress-protection rating describes performance under specified test conditions. It is not a promise that a phone is safe in the sea, pool, surf, or a sandy environment. Samsung says its Galaxy IP68 tests use still fresh water for up to 30 minutes at 1.5 metres, and its guidance explicitly advises against beach or pool use. Salt water is not covered. Samsung also warns that resistance can weaken over time and with wear.

Samsung’s official Galaxy buying guidance puts the warning plainly: “Chlorine and salty seawater aren’t covered by the IP68 rating so best avoid jumping into the pool or sea with your phone to avoid damaging it.” Its support page also says: “The water resistance of Galaxy phones is not permanent and may be naturally weakened over time or through natural wear and tear.” These are Samsung statements, not guarantees about other manufacturers’ products.
Ratings and test conditions are model-specific
| Manufacturer or device group | Published rating or test condition | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy phones covered by the cited guidance | IP68 test based on still fresh water, up to 30 minutes at 1.5 metres; beach or pool use is not advised and salt water is not covered. | Do not interpret this freshwater test as permission to use the phone in the sea or pool. |
| Apple models listed on its cited support page through the iPhone 17 group | Up to 6 metres for 30 minutes, under the listed IP68 rating. | This is a manufacturer test rating, not an instruction to submerge the phone. Confirm the exact model and current support and warranty terms. |
| Apple iPhone 11 Pro models | Up to 4 metres for 30 minutes on the cited support page. | The listed depth differs from newer model groups; do not assume one iPhone rating applies to every generation. |
| Apple iPhone 11 and XS groups | Up to 2 metres for 30 minutes on the cited support page. | Check the specific model rather than relying on a family-wide assumption. |
| Google Pixel devices | Google lists IP68 for multiple devices; the cited information does not give one common condition for every model. | Check the specifications for the exact Pixel model. A family name alone does not confirm its display, cameras, or ingress rating. |
Apple describes the cited ratings as tests under IEC 60529. Even a higher stated test depth is not a seawater guarantee or an invitation to intentionally submerge a phone. Ratings, specifications, and warranty language can depend on the exact model, so check the manufacturer’s current page for the device you own or intend to buy.
Practical protection near surf and water
If you plan to swim, use water sports equipment, or keep the phone close to the surf, a protective waterproof phone pouch is an optional extra. It can add a barrier, but it does not make careless exposure safe. Keep the device away from salt water and sand where possible, and follow the pouch maker’s instructions rather than assuming the phone’s IP rating will protect it. A rating or accessory should not be treated as a substitute for keeping the phone secure and dry.
It is also worth separating a convenience choice from a guarantee. A pouch may be useful when you want to carry the phone near water, but the phone’s own rating still has the limits set by its manufacturer, and the pouch does not change those terms. If beach use includes swimming or water sports, the safer plan is to avoid relying on either the phone rating or an accessory as permission for careless exposure.

Match the battery to a camera-heavy day
Outdoor camera use can mean long stretches with the screen on, repeated viewfinder checks, and photo review. The comparisons discussed here do not establish a directly comparable battery-endurance winner for that kind of use. Battery capacity by itself would not answer the question: runtime depends on the exact device and how it is used.
For a fair comparison, look for endurance tests covering the exact model and similar use, rather than comparing capacity figures alone. If your day will be long and you expect to use the camera frequently, a portable USB-C power bank is a practical optional accessory. No particular capacity or number of recharges is established here, so choose one based on your own trip length, charging needs, and the phone’s requirements.
When judging a battery review, check what the test actually measured and whether it resembles your day. A generic endurance result may not reflect prolonged camera-preview use and repeated image review. Look for comparisons that test the exact model under comparable conditions, and treat capacity figures as one specification rather than a promise of a particular runtime. If reliable, directly comparable tests are not available for your shortlist, do not assume that a larger capacity number settles the question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check handling, storage, and purchase fit
A phone is a poor travel camera for you if it is awkward to hold or does not have room for the photos and videos you plan to keep. Compare the exact handset’s size and weight in person if possible, especially if you take pictures one-handed or want to use it for long stretches. A larger screen may be easier for some people to frame and review shots on, while a smaller phone may be easier to handle; the right trade-off depends on your grip and preferences.
- Storage: Check the storage configuration of the specific model and decide how much room you need for your trip. Do not assume every configuration is available in every region.
- Ecosystem: Consider whether the phone works with the devices, services, and photo workflow you already use. Changing ecosystems can matter as much as a camera specification.
- Budget and availability: Current prices, stock, and regional configurations are not established here. Check local availability and the exact model listing before buying rather than relying on a specification for another region.
- Grip and controls: If you can handle the phone before purchasing, open its camera and try reaching the shutter control comfortably. A case or grip may change the feel, so account for the setup you expect to take to the beach.
There is no evidence here to name a universal value pick or attach a current price to any model. Start with a budget range that makes sense for you, then compare phones actually sold in your region against the same priorities: readable live preview, camera views you will use, acceptable handling, enough storage, and protection terms you understand. This avoids paying for a headline feature that does not solve your main problem, while still leaving room to choose a higher-end model if its particular combination suits your trip.

A practical way to shortlist phones
- Set the must-haves. Write down whether sunlight viewfinder visibility, a wide landscape view, telephoto framing, or manageable size matters most. Rank them rather than trying to optimize every specification at once.
- Verify the exact model. Confirm its regional camera setup, display details, storage option, and ingress rating on the manufacturer’s model-specific specification or support page. Do not transfer one model’s features to the whole product family.
- Look for a real outdoor display comparison. Prefer an independent evaluation that checks the camera preview in sunlight and discusses reflections. Read its test date and conditions; a single dated comparison is evidence about those tested models, not a universal present-day ranking.
- Compare camera results for your subjects. Check independent examples or comparisons that cover the camera views you will actually use—main, ultra-wide, or optical telephoto. Specifications establish coverage, not comparative image quality.
- Review the beach-risk terms. Read the maker’s current water-resistance and warranty guidance for the exact phone. If your plans include swimming or water sports, plan to keep it protected and away from seawater rather than relying on an IP number.
- Check endurance and handling. Compare battery tests with similar use, then make sure the phone feels secure and comfortable in your hand and has enough storage for your trip.
To make the process manageable, compare only a small shortlist and apply the same checks to every candidate. For each phone, note the exact model and region, whether you can read the camera preview in bright conditions, which camera views it offers, the manufacturer’s stated water-test limits, and the source and conditions of any battery result. Keeping those details side by side prevents an impressive claim for one phone from being compared with a different kind of measurement for another.
The resulting shortlist should be based on observed viewfinder legibility and reflections, the camera views you need, and how you will protect and carry the phone. Do not elevate a single peak-brightness number above the rest of those practical checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
What phone is actually clear in bright sunlight?
There is no universal winner established by the dated comparison here. In TechRadar’s June 14, 2025 sunshine test of four named phones, Philip Berne found the iPhone 16 Pro Max easiest to see for brightness, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s anti-glare coating notably reduced reflections. Try the exact phone’s camera preview outdoors when possible, because brightness, reflections, and viewing angle all affect visibility.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The comparisons discussed here do not establish a current best phone for everyone. Match the exact model’s main, ultra-wide, and optical telephoto coverage to the subjects you take, then use independent photo comparisons to judge image quality. Also check whether you can see its camera preview in bright sun.
Does an IP68 rating mean I can take my phone into the sea?
No. Samsung says its Galaxy IP68 tests use still fresh water for up to 30 minutes at 1.5 metres, and salt water is not covered; its guidance advises against beach or pool use. Other manufacturers’ ratings also have model-specific conditions. Treat the rating as a laboratory test description, not permission to submerge a phone.
Are phone peak-brightness numbers directly comparable?
Not necessarily. The 2,000-nit iPhone 16 Pro Max high-brightness claim and 2,600-nit Galaxy S25 Ultra peak claim reported by TechRadar differ from its lab results of 1,500 nits in HDR testing and 1,800 nits under a flashlight-to-sensor condition, respectively. Those measurements use different contexts and do not by themselves show sustained camera-preview visibility.
Should I buy a waterproof pouch for a beach trip?
A protective pouch is an optional extra if you expect to swim, take part in water sports, or keep the phone near surf. It adds a barrier but does not make careless exposure safe or change the phone’s water-resistance terms. Follow the pouch maker’s directions and avoid relying on a rating or accessory as a seawater guarantee.
The Bottom Line
For a beach and outdoor camera phone, prioritize a camera preview you can actually see, then match the camera coverage to your subjects and verify the exact model’s water-resistance limits, battery test context, storage, and handling. Brightness claims and IP ratings describe specific conditions; neither guarantees a comfortable viewfinder or safe seawater use.
