On most phones, you cannot choose a physical aperture: the lens opening is fixed. For portraits, use Portrait mode and adjust its depth or blur effect; for landscapes, manage focus, lens choice and exposure; for night scenes, use Night mode and keep the phone steady. Only a few specific phones offer a genuine adjustable aperture, so check the exact model and camera before looking for an f-number setting.
What aperture means—and what it means on a phone
Aperture is the opening in a lens that lets light reach the sensor. It is described by an f-number: a lower number means a wider opening, while a higher number means a narrower one. A wide aperture admits more light and can create shallower depth of field; a narrower aperture admits less light and can keep more of the scene in focus. Google illustrates the relationship with f/1.8 and f/8 in its camera aperture guide.

On most smartphones, the physical opening does not change. Google notes that phones often use software to create the shallow-background look in portraits, and that small sensors and short focal lengths tend to keep more of a scene in focus than a conventional camera might. A phone screen may still show an “aperture” control, but it can be a virtual blur or depth adjustment, not a mechanical change to the lens.
Can you change aperture on your phone camera?
Usually, no. If your phone has a fixed-aperture lens, there is no physical f-stop to select. Portrait controls that resemble an aperture setting generally change the simulated depth effect. A genuine variable aperture is a model- and camera-specific exception, not a standard smartphone feature.

For example, Apple documents manual aperture controls for iPhone 18 Pro models in specified modes in its advanced camera controls guide. Confirm that the exact model, camera module and mode support the control before treating it as a physical aperture setting. Samsung’s documentation for the Galaxy Note9 describes variable-aperture hardware as a historical model-specific example; it does not establish availability on current Samsung phones.
Huawei and HONOR also document virtual aperture or aperture-mode controls that adjust background blur. Preserve the distinction: a virtual aperture changes the rendered effect, not necessarily the lens opening. HONOR’s wide aperture instructions are one such software workflow.

Choose the portrait setting for the look you want
For a blurred background, start with Portrait mode rather than searching for an f-number. Google describes Pixel Portrait Mode as using machine learning to estimate depth and blur the background around the subject. Results depend on the phone’s sensor, lens, subject distance and processing, so do not expect every phone or scene to produce the same separation.

On supported iPhones, Apple’s Depth Control or aperture slider adjusts the portrait depth effect, and the effect can be edited after capture. It is a blur control; do not assume it physically stops down the lens unless documentation for your particular model and mode says so. See Apple’s Portrait mode guidance for supported workflows.

On HONOR
HONOR’s Wide Aperture mode asks you to focus on the subject and drag the aperture slider to adjust background blur. HONOR recommends keeping the subject within about 2 m (about 7 ft.) for this workflow. That distance is device-specific guidance, not a universal rule for phone portraits.
When a phone has a real variable aperture
A physically wider setting can admit more light and may make optical depth-of-field effects more available. The visible blur still depends on the sensor, focal length, subject distance and image processing. A variable aperture does not guarantee a dramatic background blur.

For landscapes, prioritize focus and framing
On a camera with a genuinely adjustable aperture, a narrower opening—a higher f-number—can increase depth of field and keep more of a landscape acceptably sharp. Most phone owners cannot apply that optical adjustment because their lens opening is fixed.
Instead, choose the camera lens that frames the scene well, tap or set focus where important detail should be sharp, and check exposure before taking the picture. Keep the phone steady, especially in dim light. These controls are more useful than a physical f-stop setting that the phone does not offer; phone optics also tend to keep more of the scene in focus because of their short focal lengths.

For night photos, use Night mode and manage motion
On a phone with a fixed aperture, Night mode is usually the practical starting point for a static low-light scene. Google says Pixel Night Sight analyzes motion and lighting, adjusts exposure settings and combines multiple frames to make images brighter and clearer without flash. HONOR says its Night mode adjusts exposure time to ambient brightness and instructs users to hold the phone steady until capture is complete.
A longer exposure can brighten a still scene, but movement during capture can blur. LG’s manual-photography guidance explains that slower shutter speeds suit low light and night photography but require a very steady phone or support such as a tripod; faster shutter speeds help freeze motion. If a person, pet or vehicle is moving, prioritize a faster capture and accept that the result may be darker or noisier rather than letting the subject blur.
A small tripod or phone mount can help stabilize a slow exposure. It supports the phone; it does not change aperture, and it may not be necessary when the phone’s automatic Night mode already handles the capture.

What to check when comparing phone cameras
Do not compare phones by a single aperture number alone. Check the specific camera and shooting mode, because a phone’s main, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras may differ in hardware and available controls.
- Aperture type: Is the opening fixed, physically variable, or is the on-screen control a virtual depth/blur effect?
- Control availability: Which camera module and modes expose the control, and is it available on the exact model and in your market?
- Portrait flexibility: Can you adjust depth blur, and can you edit that effect after taking the picture?
- Night capture behavior: Does the phone combine frames or use longer exposure, and how steady must the phone remain?
- Manual exposure: Does the camera app let you set shutter speed or ISO? Those controls can matter more than aperture on a fixed-opening phone.
Manufacturer documentation establishes these general optical principles and named-device workflows, not an independent ranking of phone camera performance. Availability and steps can vary by model, software version and market, so consult the current manual for the exact device.
