What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose a phone by setting a total budget, checking the real purchase terms, and comparing the features you will use—not by picking the highest rating or the lowest monthly payment. Shortlist models with the same storage and carrier status, then read ratings by category and verify today’s price and terms before buying.
1. Set your budget around the total cost
Start with the amount you can spend overall, not just the monthly payment in an advertisement. Compare the outright price with any installment offer, and read what happens if you cancel the carrier plan before the phone is paid off. A discounted carrier price can depend on staying with that carrier through payoff; canceling early may leave a balance based on the phone’s full price. Consumer Reports covers outright and installment purchases, unlocked availability, and these contract considerations in its cell phone buying guide.

Include the exact storage tier in your budget. A phone’s entry-level price may be for a smaller-capacity version, while a larger-storage model costs more. Compare like with like before deciding that one offer is cheaper.

Choose between iOS and Android with your existing apps, services, and routines in mind. Apple devices use the App Store, while Android-compatible phones use Google Play. Switching systems may mean redownloading apps or paying for some again, so account for that friction alongside the phone’s price. Consumer Reports outlines the ecosystem and app-store distinction in its buying guide.

3. Prioritize specifications you will notice
Make a short list of what matters in daily use, then compare those specifications across candidate phones. Consumer Reports says its phone evaluations cover areas such as ease of use, messaging, browsing, display, calls, battery life, portability, video, music, and camera performance. Its phone ratings overview describes this broad evaluation approach.
Size, display, and portability
Think about how the phone feels to carry and use as well as what its display offers. A larger screen may suit browsing or video, while a more portable size may be easier to handle. Match the display and size to your actual use rather than treating one specification as universally better.

Storage
Compare the same storage capacity when checking prices and ratings. If you keep many photos, videos, or apps on the device, the base-capacity version may not be the right comparison for your needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBattery and charging
Look for both battery-life evidence and charging characteristics. A battery rating can help distinguish phones, but consider how you use a phone during a typical day and whether charging convenience matters to you. Consumer Reports includes battery life in its evaluation and charging among the dimensions in its 2026 buying guide.

Camera and media
Compare camera capabilities and video performance if you take photos, record clips, or watch media often. A broad overall score may not tell you whether a camera is strong in the ways you care about; inspect the relevant category instead.
Everyday performance and usability
For calls, messages, browsing, and routine tasks, consider ease of use and the ratings categories that reflect those activities. If your main priority is gaming or another specialized workload, confirm that the available test criteria address it rather than assuming an overall score answers that question.

4. Read ratings by dimension, not as a universal verdict
A rating is useful only when you know what it measures. Consumer Reports says it ranks phones by performance and collects hundreds of data points on phones sold in the United States. Its stated evaluation areas include everyday activities and features such as battery life and camera; its 2026 guide also lists owner satisfaction, charging, ease of use, and price. In Consumer Reports’ 2026 smartphone overview, the top six phones in its ratings were separated by just 2 points in Overall Score. 5. Compare the same model configuration and purchase terms
Before choosing between two shortlisted phones, line up the details that can change the comparison:
- Storage: match capacity, not just the model name.
- Carrier status: compare unlocked with unlocked, or make carrier requirements explicit.
- Purchase basis: distinguish outright retail price from installment or promotional pricing.
- Contract conditions: check payoff obligations and what happens if you leave the carrier.
Consumer Reports defines the price shown in its 2026 buying guide as the lowest approximate retail cost for the smallest-capacity version purchased without a contract or agreement. That figure may not match a carrier offer or a model with more storage; consult the guide’s price definition when interpreting its comparisons.
6. Verify current details before you buy
Prices, promotions, inventory, model ranges, and ratings can change. Recheck the exact model and variant with the seller or manufacturer before purchasing, including storage, unlocked or carrier status, and any support terms that matter to you. Consumer Reports’ 2026 smartphone overview includes products from Apple, Google, and Samsung, but it is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent shortlist. Consumer Reports says its ratings are available to members; consult its current access information if you want to use those ratings directly.
