How to Choose a Pet Tortoise: Species, Lifespan, Space, and Care Costs

Choose a tortoise by the adult animal you can house and care for—not by how small or inexpensive it is as a hatchling. Before acquiring one, match a species’ mature size, lifespan, habitat and diet to your space, climate, budget, local rules and access to a reptile veterinarian.

Start with the commitment, not the hatchling

Tortoises can live for decades, and some cited species may outlive their first keeper. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine reports that red-footed tortoises can live at least 50 years and sulcatas as long as 80 years with proper care; UC Davis says desert tortoises may live 60 years or more in captivity. These are examples for particular species, not a lifespan that applies to every tortoise. Make a succession plan for who could care for the animal if you cannot.

Dr. Amanda Wong of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine advises prospective owners to be prepared to provide adequate space for a full-grown tortoise and to commit to care throughout its “very long lifespans.” University of Illinois: Tortoises as Pets.

Compare species by adult needs

Common pet tortoises include Russian, Hermann’s, Greek, red-footed and sulcata tortoises, but their practical demands differ. The Illinois veterinary source gives Russian adults as 5–8 inches long, while sulcatas can reach 30 inches; males can exceed 100 pounds. A large, powerful adult needs correspondingly robust, secure housing. Those figures are examples, not a full care profile for either species.

What to compare Why it matters before you choose
Adult size and strength Plan the enclosure and barriers for the mature animal. A sulcata’s potential size is very different from the cited Russian tortoise range. University of Illinois.
Potential lifespan Some species-specific examples span at least 50 years for red-footed tortoises, up to 80 years for sulcatas, and 60 years or more for desert tortoises in captivity. University of Illinois; UC Davis: Tortoises.
Climate and habitat Consider whether your climate permits safe outdoor time and whether you can provide the selected species’ indoor heat, UVB, humidity, shade, shelter and secure barriers.
Diet and veterinary care Diet varies by species. Confirm appropriate foods and care with a reptile-knowledgeable veterinarian, and establish access to one before acquisition. University of Illinois.
Legal and conservation status Check local rules and source documentation, and consider conservation and trade concerns, particularly for sulcatas. WWF: Sulcata Tortoise.

There is no species ranking that makes one tortoise right for every household. The better fit is the species whose adult needs you can reliably meet over its lifetime.

Work out whether you can provide the space and habitat

Plan for an adult-sized enclosure before bringing home a young tortoise. The University of Illinois recommends as much space as possible and ideally both indoor and outdoor enclosures. UC Davis gives dimensions and burrowing precautions for desert tortoise outdoor housing; those details are specific to that species and should not be treated as universal enclosure rules.

Indoor housing can mean a substantial equipment commitment: appropriate UVB and heat, a temperature gradient, monitoring, and a suitable day/night lighting schedule. Bulb type, placement, distance, operating hours and replacement interval depend on the animal and setup. Ask a reptile veterinarian for current species-specific guidance rather than assuming one bulb or enclosure design works for all tortoises.

For desert tortoises, UC Davis says UVB is essential for vitamin D synthesis. Its desert-tortoise indoor guidance describes UVB placement and lighting duration, heat gradients, multiple thermometers and safe substrate. It also calls for an outdoor enclosure protected from escape, predators and excessive direct sun; its UVB bulb guidance says to replace the bulb every 3–6 months because output fades. These are desert-tortoise recommendations, not a universal schedule for other species or products. UC Davis: Tortoises.

A UC Davis California Veterinary Emergency Team guide, last updated January 2025, says indoor-housed tortoises need a bulb providing no less than 5% UVB at approximately 12 inches, operated on a 12-hour cycle. Confirm that bulb type and distance against current veterinary advice for your chosen species and enclosure. UC Davis California Veterinary Emergency Team: Tortoise Care.

Budget for the complete setup and ongoing care

There is no reliable universal startup or annual total established by the veterinary and government sources cited here. Costs vary with species, enclosure design, climate, location and veterinary services. Get local estimates before choosing, and price the adult setup rather than only the initial purchase.

The University of Illinois article recommends at least annual physical examinations. Dr. Wong says these should include bloodwork and fecal testing, and sometimes X-rays or other imaging. Fees depend on your location and the services needed, so ask nearby reptile veterinarians for estimates. University of Illinois: Tortoises as Pets.

Check responsible sourcing, local law and adoption eligibility

Before paying or adopting, verify that the animal has a legal, documented source and that keeping it is permitted where you live. Adoption routes can be tightly localized rather than available nationwide. Utah’s state wildlife agency, for example, describes a captive desert tortoise program with residency restrictions, an inspected enclosure, fees and continued owner responsibility for veterinary costs. Check current eligibility and requirements with the relevant local agency or rescue; the Utah program is not a general adoption route for other places or species. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources: Desert Tortoise.

A practical pre-acquisition checklist

  1. Choose a species only after confirming its expected adult size, habitat needs, diet and lifespan with a reptile-knowledgeable veterinarian or authoritative species-specific guidance.
  2. Plan and price a secure enclosure for the adult, including indoor equipment or safe outdoor housing as appropriate.
  3. Identify a local reptile veterinarian and budget for routine and unexpected care.
  4. Decide who could provide care if you are no longer able to do so.
  5. Verify legal status, source documentation and any adoption requirements in your jurisdiction.
