Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a payment provider by matching its country eligibility, payment methods, full costs and operating terms to your business—not by picking the lowest advertised card rate. Start with where your business is registered and where your customers pay from, then compare providers using the same transaction assumptions and verify current terms directly.
Define what your business needs to accept
Before comparing providers, write down the details that determine which services and terms are relevant. Availability and payment methods can depend on both your business’s country and the customer markets you serve; one country’s pricing page does not establish coverage across Europe.

- Merchant location: the country where the business is registered, along with any countries in which it operates.
- Customer markets: the countries where customers live and the currencies they are likely to use.
- Payment mix: cards, locally important bank-based methods or wallets, and any recurring-payment needs.
- Transaction profile: monthly volume, average transaction value, card origin and type, refund frequency, and expected dispute volume.
- Business model: one-off sales, subscriptions, marketplace or split payments, in-person sales, or plans to expand internationally.
- Operations: website platform, integration capacity, settlement currencies, reconciliation needs, and support requirements.
Confirm that each candidate accepts businesses in your country and supports the payment methods and currencies needed in your target markets. Also check onboarding requirements and whether your business category is permitted.
Compare the full cost using the same scenario
A headline percentage is not a complete cost comparison. Calculate each provider’s charges against the same realistic month of sales, using your expected transaction values and payment mix. Include fixed charges as well as percentage fees, and account for costs that apply only to some methods or circumstances.

Adyen describes its pricing as a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by payment method; its stated pay-per-transaction model has no setup or monthly fee, while other products may be priced separately. Its pricing interface is location- and method-sensitive, so use the current terms for your business rather than treating a displayed figure as a Europe-wide rate: Adyen pricing.
Mollie publishes country- and payment-method-specific pricing and says it charges for successful transactions. Select the page for the merchant’s actual country and the relevant method before comparing a fee; the displayed terms can change. The reviewed pages include different country contexts, not a single rate for all European merchants: Mollie pricing for Belgium and Mollie pricing for France.

PayPal’s merchant fee schedules also vary by market and payment or account type. Its Ireland and Liechtenstein schedules label an update date of 7 September 2026; neither should be applied to another country without checking that country’s current schedule: PayPal fees for Ireland and PayPal fees for Liechtenstein.

Check market coverage and payment methods
Ask each provider which methods it supports for your merchant country and each customer market. Make the comparison specific: a provider may support cards but not the local bank-based method your customers expect, or may offer different methods depending on the country. Confirm whether recurring payments, marketplace or split-payment functions, and in-person acceptance are available if your business needs them.
Do not assume a provider’s presence in one European market means that every method, currency, or service is available throughout Europe. The provider’s current country and method documentation—and confirmation during onboarding—are more useful than an isolated fee page.

Make checkout, integration and compliance part of the decision
Check that the provider can integrate with your website platform and that your team can maintain the integration. Review the available documentation and authentication flows, how the checkout works for customers, and what tools exist for reporting, reconciliation, refunds, fraud controls and disputes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Strong customer authentication (SCA) is also a practical checkout requirement. Article 97 of the EU’s revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) requires SCA in specified situations, including when a payer accesses a payment account online, initiates an electronic payment, or performs certain remote actions that may carry fraud or abuse risk. For remote electronic payments, authentication must dynamically link to the specific amount and payee. This is not equivalent to a fresh two-factor challenge on every online payment: conditions and exemptions under applicable technical standards matter. Read Article 97 of the consolidated Directive (EU) 2015/2366 and the European Commission’s business guidance on electronic payments.

The Commission says online businesses must be able to perform SCA. A payment provider’s tools can support the checkout, but do not assume that choosing a provider transfers every applicable compliance obligation away from your business. The same guidance describes circumstances in which a business accepting a specified electronic payment method and currency may not reject it solely because the customer or their payment service provider is located elsewhere in the EU. That is not a general requirement to offer every payment method.
The Commission’s PSD2 policy page records political agreement on proposals to revise PSD2 on 27 November 2025. Political agreement on proposals is not, by itself, an enacted and applicable replacement rule; distinguish that development from the rules currently applicable to your business. See the European Commission’s payment-services policy page.

Shortlist providers against the requirements that will affect daily operations. Ask for answers specific to your country, sales model and expected volumes; the available provider materials do not establish a uniform cross-provider scorecard.
Recommended Free Tools
- Onboarding and eligibility: required documentation, underwriting, permitted business categories, and supported countries.
- Settlement: payout timing, available settlement currencies and any associated charges.
- Integration: compatibility with your platform, developer documentation, migration work and maintenance.
- Money management: transaction reporting, reconciliation, refunds and access to payout records.
- Risk and disputes: fraud controls, authentication options, dispute workflows and related terms.
- Service terms: support availability, contract duration, termination, reserves or holds, and other terms that could affect cash flow.
Ask each provider to confirm these points in writing where they are material to your decision. For card surcharges, keep the scope narrow: the Commission says PSD2 together with the Interchange Fee Regulation limits fees for consumer debit and credit card transactions and bans retailers from imposing surcharges for those card types. That statement should not be extended to every card or payment method; consult the Commission guidance for the applicable scope and exceptions.
Build a shortlist and verify it before switching
- Filter for eligibility: ask whether the provider will onboard your registered business, category and expected markets.
- Filter for customer fit: check the methods and currencies customers need in each target country, plus any subscription, marketplace or in-person requirements.
- Request comparable pricing: give every provider the same expected monthly volume, average ticket, payment mix, card origins, refund assumptions and currency needs. Ask for current charges for processing, conversion, payouts, refunds, disputes and separately priced services.
- Test the workflow: evaluate integration, checkout and SCA handling, then test a payment, refund and reconciliation process before committing to a migration.
- Review the written terms: confirm settlement timing and currency, support, dispute procedures, contract terms and any conditions that could delay or restrict payouts.
A survey or isolated rate is not a substitute for that comparison. Worldline’s 2024 survey of Swiss online retailers reported provider mentions of 32% for PayPal, 13% for Stripe, 4% for Adyen and 2.0% for Mollie. Those figures describe mentions among survey respondents in Switzerland, not Europe-wide market shares or a current ranking of provider quality or price: Worldline’s 2024 Swiss online-retailer survey.
