Choose a payment provider only after you have mapped how buyers pay, how money is divided among sellers and the platform, and when each seller is paid. An industrial marketplace often needs more than checkout processing: it may also need seller onboarding and verification, payment allocation, balances, payouts, refunds, dispute handling, and transaction-level reconciliation. Compare providers against that actual flow, then get written confirmation of eligibility, responsibilities, supported payment routes, and total costs.

Start with the transaction flow, not the gateway brand

A conventional checkout gateway processes a buyer’s payment. A multi-seller marketplace may also need infrastructure for verifying sellers, allocating order funds and fees, managing balances, and paying sellers. These are related functions, but a provider’s marketplace product is not automatic approval for your business or a substitute for deciding who is responsible for each transaction.

Before approaching providers, document the answers to these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which legal entity operates the platform, and who is presented to the buyer as the seller or payee?
  • Can one order contain goods from more than one seller?
  • How does the platform earn revenue, and how are its fees calculated and deducted?
  • What should happen to the money when an order is cancelled, returned, partially refunded, disputed, or only partly captured?
  • When and how should each seller receive its funds?

That map determines the payment structure you need. Stripe describes direct charges, destination charges, and splits between multiple sellers; Adyen documents allocations to seller and platform balance accounts. These are implementation patterns, not legal or accounting advice. Ask the provider to confirm how the proposed structure assigns the payee, fees, refunds, and losses in your specific arrangement. See Stripe Connect and Adyen’s payment-processing documentation.

Documented pattern What to clarify for your marketplace
Stripe direct charges Confirm which account is charged, how platform fees and seller proceeds are handled, and who is responsible for refunds and disputes in the proposed setup.
Stripe destination charges Confirm how a platform-collected payment is transferred to a seller, how fees are allocated, and what happens when a transaction is reversed or disputed.
Stripe splits between multiple sellers Specify the allocation for every seller and the platform, including how partial refunds or changes to an order affect those amounts.
Adyen payment allocations Confirm how payments, captures, and refunds are split across seller and platform balance accounts. Adyen warns that without split instructions, the full transaction amount and fees can be booked to the platform’s liable account.

Check seller onboarding and eligibility

Make a list of the platform’s and sellers’ legal entity types and countries, along with the seller information and verification steps your onboarding process can collect. Then ask each provider to confirm that it can support those specific entities and the industrial products and transaction profile involved.

  • Stripe: Connect describes identity verification, KYC, and sanctions checks as part of its service. Ask what checks apply to your configuration and what seller information is required.
  • Adyen: Its marketplace documentation describes onboarding and verification for marketplace users and publishes supported regions. Check the current documentation against the locations and entities in your seller base.
  • Worldpay: Its marketplace API flow includes party creation and the option to request identity verification. Confirm what verification is required for your sellers and business model.

Provider documentation describes capabilities, not an underwriting decision. Get confirmation for the exact seller types, countries, beneficial-owner requirements, industrial category, and expected transaction profile before building around a provider.

Verify the buyer and seller payment footprint

Build a corridor-by-corridor list rather than relying on a broad claim of global reach. Include buyer country, seller country, transaction currency, desired settlement currency, buyer payment method, seller payout instrument, and whether funds cross borders. Ask providers to confirm every combination relevant to launch and planned expansion.

Adyen publishes supported regions for its marketplace offering; Stripe describes global payouts; Worldpay advertises broad currency acceptance and international payouts. Those general statements do not establish support for a particular combination of platform location, seller location, currency, payment method, and payout instrument. Recheck current documentation and obtain written confirmation for the routes you actually need: Adyen Marketplaces, Stripe Connect, and Worldpay for Marketplaces.

Specify payout timing and control of funds

Set the business rule before comparing payout features. Sellers might be paid on a schedule, after shipment or delivery, or after a defined returns or dispute window. State whether you need balances, reserves, deductions, multiple recipients, or manual control over payout release.

The providers describe different models: Stripe documents standard bank payouts and split payouts; Adyen describes managed payouts or custom control over timing and says its platform can hold funds until payout; Worldpay describes automated weekly scheduled payouts. Ask what is contractually available in each relevant market, how payout failures are handled, and what limits or conditions apply. Do not call a marketplace balance or delayed payout “escrow” unless the provider and qualified counsel confirm that characterization.

Compare risk handling and reconciliation

For each transaction stage, identify who acts and who bears the financial consequence. Cover onboarding reviews, fraud decisions, refunds, chargebacks, seller negative balances, failed payouts, and support escalation. A feature label alone does not tell you how responsibility is divided under the proposed contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Ask how fraud controls are configured and who makes or reviews risk decisions. Stripe presents configurable fraud tooling and managed risk options; Adyen documents risk-management features; Worldpay documents optional 3-D Secure and fraud features.
  • Confirm what records, reports, and event notifications are available for order-level accounting, fee allocation, refunds, and seller balances. Adyen documents generated reporting for bookkeeping and reconciliation.
  • Review how the technical integration handles exceptions, such as a partial refund after funds have been allocated or a seller payout that fails.

Assess these features alongside contractual liability, data exports, integration requirements, and the support path for urgent payment issues.

Compare marketplace providers against your requirements

These official pages establish that each provider documents marketplace-specific capabilities. They do not establish relative approval rates, reliability, total cost, or suitability for a particular industrial marketplace.

Provider Documented marketplace capabilities Resolve before selection
Stripe Connect Direct charges, destination charges, splits between multiple sellers, payouts, seller onboarding and verification, and risk tools. Supported countries and seller eligibility; dispute and loss responsibilities; payout timing; complete fees for the intended flow.
Adyen for Platforms Seller onboarding and verification, payment splits, fund allocation and holding until payout, managed or custom payout timing, risk management, and reconciliation. Region and payment-method support; underwriting; split behavior for refunds and captures; payout conditions; negotiated commercial terms.
Worldpay for Marketplaces Party onboarding and verification, card pay-ins, optional 3-D Secure and fraud features, split payments, balance management, money movement, and scheduled payouts. Supported geographies; account and seller requirements; exact payout model and timing; technical fit; full pricing.

Request comparable total-cost proposals

Ask every candidate to price the same operating scenario. Include expected monthly volume, average and largest order value, card and non-card mix, domestic and cross-border share, refunds and disputes, seller count, and payout frequency. Have each proposal itemize applicable processing, platform, payout, currency-conversion, dispute, refund, minimum, and implementation costs.

The official pages cited here do not establish comparable prices for a defined marketplace, so they do not support a universal cheapest-provider ranking. Compare written proposals for the same assumptions and transaction structure.
