How to Choose a Password Manager for an Older Adult

Choose a password manager that works on the devices the older adult already uses, reliably fills passwords, supports multifactor authentication (MFA), and has a recovery plan they can understand. The best fit is the one they can use confidently in everyday situations—not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. Try the setup together on their actual phone or computer before deciding.

Why a password manager can help

A password manager can generate and store a different strong password for each account, then fill it in when the person signs in. That reduces the need to remember a separate password for every site. NIST recommends using a password manager for accounts that require passwords, and CISA’s January 2025 Online Safety Tips for Older Adults advises: “Use a password manager to generate, save and fill in strong passwords, so they don’t need to be remembered.”

The manager account protects access to the saved passwords, so it needs special care too. Choose a strong credential for it and favor a manager that supports MFA, an additional sign-in check beyond the password. NIST’s password guidance, updated August 20, 2025, recommends a password manager and says a password a person must create should be at least 15 characters. CISA’s older-adult tip sheet describes strong passwords as 16 or more characters, random, and unique. Those are general password recommendations, not minimum lengths imposed by a password-manager product.

What to check before choosing

Works with the person’s devices and accounts

Check that the manager supports the phone, computer, operating system, and browser the person actually uses. During a trial, have them sign in to a few familiar accounts and see whether the autofill prompt is easy to recognize and use. NIST’s digital identity guidance treats ease of entering credentials and support for autofill or paste as usability considerations.

Comfortable to read and operate

Look at the real setup and sign-in screens together. Is the text comfortable to read? Are buttons, prompts, and instructions clear? Can the person complete routine sign-ins without constant help? NIST’s usability guidance considers the whole authentication lifecycle, including both typical use and occasional events. A feature list or product description cannot establish that a particular manager will be easy for this person.

Security features the person can use

  • Password generation: Can it create strong, unique passwords for accounts?
  • Autofill: Does filling a password work reliably on the sites and apps the person uses?
  • MFA: Does the manager support an additional sign-in check, and can the person complete it?

Recovery if access is lost

Before storing passwords, read the provider’s current recovery policy and discuss what the person would do if they forgot the manager credential or lost their main device. Decide how recovery information will remain accessible when needed but protected from others. Recovery procedures differ by service; there is no single recovery method to assume will work for every manager.

Helper access that preserves the user’s control

If the older adult wants help managing passwords, check whether a provider offers controlled sharing or emergency access, what the helper could see or do, and how access can be changed or removed. Verify the current details with the provider. Do not assume a family member should own the account: the older adult should understand and consent to any helper access.

How to try a manager with the person who will use it

  1. List the devices and browsers. Note the phone, computer, and browser used for important accounts, then confirm the manager supports them.
  2. Set it up together. Let the older adult read and follow the instructions. Notice where they hesitate or need help instead of assuming that setup will be easy later.
  3. Test everyday sign-ins. Try autofill on several familiar accounts and check whether the prompts, password filling, and any MFA step are understandable.
  4. Talk through a lost-device or forgotten-credential scenario. Use the provider’s current recovery instructions to decide what the person would do and where recovery information will be kept.
  5. Agree on any help. If a helper is involved, review the provider’s sharing or emergency-access controls together and make sure the older adult understands and approves the arrangement.
  6. Choose only after the trial. If routine tasks are confusing or unreliable, try another option rather than expecting the person to adapt to a poor fit.

How to compare recommendations and rankings

The FTC advises consumers to consult expert reviews when choosing a reputable third-party password manager. Treat a ranking as a starting point, not proof that a product is easiest or most accessible for an older adult: check when the review was published and how it assessed products, then confirm current features with the provider and test the actual experience.

There is no established universal best manager for older adults. The available abstract of the 2020 paper Why Older Adults (Don’t) Use Password Managers notes family recommendations and education as possible adoption motivators, but it does not provide numerical findings here that support a broader claim. A family recommendation may help someone consider a tool; it does not replace the older adult’s own choice and consent.
