For home listening, portability and live inputs may matter little; for a yard gathering, battery life and splash protection become more relevant; for an event with a microphone, instrument, or DJ source, check the exact inputs and plan for venue coverage separately.
1. Start with the setting and how you’ll move the speaker
A speaker that stays in one room can prioritize placement and available power. If you’ll carry it across a yard or move it between locations, consider its carrying features and weight. For frequent moves over longer distances, wheels and a telescopic handle may be more useful than a compact carry design.

- Home: Think about where the speaker will sit and whether you need battery operation or can use wired power.
- Outdoor gatherings: Check the exact model’s protection rating and follow its operating instructions. An IPX4 claim indicates splash protection, not protection against submersion.
- Events: Account for transport as well as setup. A heavier speaker can be inconvenient to move even if it has wheels.
2. Match battery life to the event
Compare the manufacturer’s stated runtime with the length of your gathering, and treat “up to” figures as maximum claims rather than guaranteed performance. Actual playtime depends on use conditions; JBL specifically notes that PartyBox 310 runtime varies with content and battery condition. If the event may run longer than the expected battery life, check whether wired power is available for the model.

3. Check protection for the actual conditions
Look up the exact model’s IP rating rather than assuming that every party speaker handles weather the same way. The cited JBL PartyBox 110, 130, 520, and 720 product pages list IPX4 splash protection. That rating should not be read as permission to submerge the speaker or leave it exposed to conditions beyond the manufacturer’s instructions.

- Microphone or guitar: JBL lists mic and guitar inputs on the PartyBox 110 and 130.
- Microphone, guitar, or DJ console: JBL lists two XLR inputs on the PartyBox 520 and 720. JBL describes the 520’s inputs as supporting these sources; confirm that your equipment is compatible.
5. Compare published examples carefully
The figures below are specifications and runtime claims published on JBL’s official product pages, accessed in 2026—not independent test results. All listed runtimes are “up to” claims.

6. Don’t use wattage as a promise of coverage
A wattage label alone does not establish loudness, sound quality, or how many people a speaker can cover. The manufacturer product pages cited here do not provide independent, matched sound-quality comparisons, standardized maximum-output measurements across these models, or venue-coverage limits. For a large crowd or an event with live sound, look for independent measurements relevant to the specific models and venue, or seek an event-audio assessment rather than assuming one speaker will be sufficient.

7. Use this quick selection checklist
- Define the setting: Decide whether the speaker will stay indoors, be used outdoors, or serve an event.
- Plan transport: Check the weight and whether you need a carry handle, wheels, or a telescopic handle.
- Estimate runtime: Compare the event length with the manufacturer’s “up to” battery claim and consider access to wired power.
- Check exposure: Verify the exact IP rating and follow the model’s instructions; splash protection is not submersion protection.
- List your sources: Confirm the necessary Bluetooth, USB, auxiliary, microphone, instrument, or XLR connections and equipment compatibility.
- Decide on expansion: If you want to connect multiple speakers, verify whether the exact models support pairing and whether the connection is wired or wireless.
- Assess coverage independently: For a large venue or live event, do not infer audience coverage from wattage or battery specifications.
