For an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, look for a microSDXC UHS-I card. Choose its capacity from the downloadable games, updates, and downloadable content you intend to keep installed, then check that the card’s stated read speed fits Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec high-speed guidance. There is no single capacity that suits every library.

First confirm the console generation. Nintendo Switch 2 uses a different storage standard: game storage requires microSD Express. An ordinary card used in an earlier Switch can import captured Switch screenshots and videos on Switch 2, but it cannot save or load digital games or save data there. Official compatibility details are in Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 support table.

What microSD card do you need for Nintendo Switch?

The practical search phrase for the original Switch family is microSDXC UHS-I. Nintendo supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, but the larger capacities useful for a digital library begin with microSDXC. Nintendo lists microSDXC capacities from 64 GB through 2 TB and says a system update is required before using a microSDXC card. Its support guidance recommends UHS-I and identifies 60–95 MB/sec as the high-speed range.

That recommendation concerns transfer capability, not a guaranteed in-console benchmark. A package may advertise a maximum speed measured under different conditions; the Switch may not reach that figure. Treat UHS-I compatibility and the stated read speed as buying checks rather than promises of a particular loading-time improvement.

Nintendo’s own explanation is direct: “In order to improve your gameplay experience, using a microSD card with a higher transfer speed is recommended.” The sentence appears in Nintendo Support’s “Which microSD cards are supported?” article.

Check which Nintendo console you own

Original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Model

These three systems belong to the original Switch family for storage purposes. They accept supported microSD cards for downloadable software, software updates, downloadable content, and captured images and video. For a current digital-game purchase, a microSDXC UHS-I card is the sensible target because it combines the capacity range Nintendo documents with its higher-speed recommendation.

Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 requires microSD Express for game storage. Nintendo lists microSD Express capacity up to 2 TB for that console. A standard microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card that worked in an earlier Switch does not become a Switch 2 game-storage card simply because it fits physically. Nintendo says such an older card can still be used to import captured Switch screenshots and videos, but it cannot save or load digital games or save data on Switch 2. See the generation-specific rules in Nintendo’s official compatibility guidance.

Should you buy microSD Express for an original Switch?

An Express card can be used with the original Switch, but Nintendo says its read and write speed in that system will be equivalent to an ordinary microSD card. Therefore, do not pay for an Express card expecting it to turn into a performance upgrade on an original Switch. Buy Express when the target console is Switch 2 and the card will store its games; choose the original Switch standard when the target is an original Switch-family console.

Understand Nintendo’s supported card families

Card family Nintendo-listed capacity What it means for buying
microSD Up to 2 GB Supported card family, but the capacity is usually too small for a digital-game library.
microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB Supported for smaller storage needs; capacity may be consumed quickly by downloadable software and updates.
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB The relevant family for most digital-game buyers; Nintendo requires a system update to use it.
microSD Express for Switch 2 Up to 2 TB Required for Switch 2 game storage, not a speed upgrade for an original Switch.

The capacity ranges and update requirement come from Nintendo’s support documentation, not from a particular card manufacturer. A number such as 256 GB is a convenient product-search term, not a Nintendo-endorsed answer for every player.

How much storage do you need for Switch games?

Size the card to your own installed library. Nintendo does not specify one ideal capacity because the answer changes with the games you buy and the downloadable content you choose. The company’s Data Management FAQ advises checking each game’s storage requirement in Nintendo eShop before purchase. Use those listings as the source of truth for your planned library.

Make a keep-installed list

  1. List the digital games you expect to keep installed rather than redownloading whenever you want to play.
  2. Open each title’s Nintendo eShop listing and note the stated storage requirement.
  3. Add the requirements for the games you want available at the same time.
  4. Include the downloadable content and software updates you expect to retain; Nintendo identifies both as content that can be stored on a microSD card.
  5. Choose the next practical capacity above that total so ordinary additions do not immediately force a deletion.

This approach is more reliable than choosing a card from a universal game count. Nintendo’s official material does not establish an average Switch library size, a typical game count per card, or a single “best” capacity.

Use capacity as a planning decision

A smaller card can work if you buy mostly physical cartridges, keep only a few digital games installed, or are comfortable archiving and redownloading titles. A larger card suits a player who buys many digital games, keeps multiple large downloads ready, or wants room for updates and DLC. The right choice depends on the software you intend to keep, not on the console model alone.

Capacity printed on the package is the storage tier you are buying; the console and its file system use some space for formatting and management. Do not treat the printed number as a guarantee that every byte will appear as free space after setup. The important comparison is whether the card leaves enough usable room for your planned installations and future additions.

What speed should a Switch microSD card have?

Choose a card identified as UHS-I and compare its stated read speed with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec high-speed guideline. This is Nintendo’s published guidance for the original Switch family. It is a compatibility and suitability check, not a promise that every UHS-I card will deliver the package maximum in the console.

Read the package carefully

  • Confirm that the card is microSDXC when you need 64 GB or more.
  • Confirm the UHS-I designation rather than assuming that any “high-speed” marketing label means the same thing.
  • Look for a stated read speed in or above Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guidance.
  • Do not infer a console result from a manufacturer’s laboratory or computer-based maximum.

Nintendo’s wording supports choosing higher transfer capability, but the official sources do not provide a universal measured loading-time difference between individual cards. Avoid buying on an unverified claim that one named model is the fastest Switch card.

What a microSD card stores—and what it does not

On an original Switch, a microSD card can store downloadable software, software updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and captured video. It is an expansion location for those files when system memory is not enough.

Game save data is different. Nintendo says save data is stored in the console’s system memory and cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card. Moving a game to a card therefore does not create a portable backup of its progress. The storage decision is about installed software and captures, not about relocating save files.

Nintendo’s storage and save-data explanations are collected in its Data Management FAQ. Read that distinction before buying a card for backup purposes: a card can hold the game download, but it is not the location Nintendo uses for the game’s save data.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the console. Original Switch, Switch Lite, and OLED Model use the original Switch card guidance; Switch 2 requires microSD Express for games.
  2. Select the card family. For an original Switch-family console, search for microSDXC when you need 64 GB or more.
  3. Check speed labeling. Prefer UHS-I and a stated read speed aligned with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guidance.
  4. Calculate your library. Use the storage requirements shown in Nintendo eShop for the games, DLC, and updates you plan to keep installed.
  5. Allow room for change. Pick a capacity above the initial total if you expect to add games without immediately archiving something else.
  6. Verify the listing. Check the exact card type, capacity, and current availability. Avoid listings whose description mixes ordinary microSD with microSD Express or gives no clear capacity and speed information.
  7. Keep expectations realistic. No official Nintendo source establishes a universal best brand, price, durability ranking, or measured loading advantage for a specific model.

Example decisions for common buyers

The occasional digital buyer

If you download only a small number of games and are willing to archive titles you have finished, start by adding the eShop requirements for the games you will keep installed. A supported smaller card may be adequate if that total remains within its usable space. There is no reason to buy an Express card for an original Switch solely because its label sounds faster.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The mostly digital player

If most purchases are downloads and you want several games available simultaneously, begin with the same eShop calculation but choose a substantially larger microSDXC tier than the immediate total. This reduces the frequency of deleting and redownloading software as the library grows. The exact tier is still determined by your titles and their listed requirements.

The player moving from Switch to Switch 2

Separate the two consoles’ storage plans. Keep an ordinary Switch-compatible card for the original system if needed, but buy microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. Do not assume that moving the old card will move digital games or save data to the new console; Nintendo explicitly limits the old card on Switch 2 to importing captured Switch screenshots and videos.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by capacity alone

A very large card is not automatically the right card. If it is the wrong card family for the console, capacity does not solve compatibility. Start with the console generation and card type, then size the capacity from eShop requirements.

Confusing microSDXC with microSD Express

The names describe different standards. microSDXC is the normal large-capacity choice for the original Switch family. microSD Express is the requirement for Switch 2 game storage. Check the exact wording in the product listing before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting saves on the card

Because downloadable games can be stored on the card, it is easy to assume progress will be there too. Nintendo’s storage rules keep save data in system memory, so a card is not a save-data copy or replacement.

Treating advertised maximum speed as a console guarantee

Use the manufacturer’s read-speed figure to compare a card with Nintendo’s guidance, but do not promise yourself a particular loading time. Nintendo recommends higher transfer speed and provides the 60–95 MB/sec guideline; it does not certify a named model’s real-world performance in every Switch.

Ignoring the microSDXC update requirement

If you choose a 64 GB–2 TB microSDXC card, the Switch needs a system update to use it. Complete that requirement before concluding that a compatible card is defective.

What to do when a card does not meet your needs

The card is too small

Return to the eShop listings and recalculate using the games, DLC, and updates you want installed at the same time. If the total is close to the card’s usable space, move to a larger supported capacity rather than relying on repeated deletions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The card is the wrong generation

An ordinary Switch card cannot provide Switch 2 game storage. Replace it with a microSD Express card for Switch 2. Conversely, do not purchase Express solely for an original Switch expecting an Express-specific speed increase; Nintendo says the original system operates it at ordinary microSD-equivalent speed.

The card’s speed claim is unclear

Choose a listing that clearly identifies UHS-I and states a read speed you can compare with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guidance. If the listing does not identify the standard or capacity, it does not give you enough information to make a dependable compatibility decision.

Official specifications at a glance

Question Nintendo’s documented answer
Which cards does the original Switch family support? microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC; microSDXC use requires a system update.
What capacities are listed? microSD up to 2 GB; microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB; microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB.
What speed guidance is published? UHS-I, with a 60–95 MB/sec high-speed guideline.
What does Switch 2 require for game storage? microSD Express, with capacity up to 2 TB listed by Nintendo.
Where are game saves stored? In system memory, not on the microSD card.
What can the original Switch card store? Downloadable software, software updates, DLC, captured images, and captured video.

The specifications above come from Nintendo Support: Switch 2 and Switch compatibility, supported microSD cards, and the Data Management FAQ.

Bottom-line decision

For an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or OLED Model, buy a genuine microSDXC UHS-I card whose stated read speed aligns with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/sec guidance, then choose capacity by adding the eShop storage requirements for the games and content you plan to keep installed. There is no universal best size. For Nintendo Switch 2, use microSD Express for game storage; an older ordinary microSD card is limited to importing captured Switch media and cannot carry digital games or save data on that console.
