The right Nifty 50 index fund is not necessarily the one with the lowest expense ratio, the largest assets under management (AUM), or the highest recent return. Compare funds that follow the same Nifty 50 benchmark, match Direct with Direct or Regular with Regular plans, then examine tracking error, tracking difference, current total expense ratio (TER), portfolio replication and AUM using dated scheme disclosures.
The Nifty 50 is a diversified 50-stock index spanning 13 sectors. The NSE says it represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on the NSE on 30 March 2026. A fund tracking it gives broad large-cap Indian-equity exposure, but its return will differ from the index because of expenses, cash, trading, fund flows, corporate actions and index changes.

What a Nifty 50 index fund actually does
A Nifty 50 index mutual fund is designed to replicate the performance of the Nifty 50 rather than select stocks through a fund manager’s active views. The scheme normally holds the index constituents, or uses an approved replication approach, in proportions intended to resemble the benchmark. The benchmark should be identified precisely: a fund may track the Nifty 50 Total Return Index (TRI), while another figure in an advertisement or data service may refer to the price index.
The Nifty 50 contains 50 companies selected under NSE’s index methodology and covers 13 sectors. Its breadth does not make it a complete portfolio for every investor: it remains an equity investment concentrated in India’s largest listed companies and can fall substantially in a market decline. The index’s reported 53.73% share of free-float market capitalisation on 30 March 2026 describes its market coverage on that date, not a guaranteed future allocation or return.

Because an index fund’s job is to stay close to its benchmark, the central question is not “Which fund will outperform?” It is “Which eligible fund has delivered the most consistent, cost-efficient replication for the plan and benchmark I intend to own?”
The four numbers that matter most
Tracking error: consistency of the gap
SEBI describes tracking error as the standard deviation of the difference between portfolio and benchmark returns over a period. In practical terms, it measures how much the fund’s return gap moves around from observation to observation. NSE describes annualised tracking error for index funds using changes in daily NAV and changes in the benchmark’s total-return index.
A lower tracking-error figure generally means the fund has stayed more consistently close to the benchmark under the stated calculation method. It does not tell you the total amount by which the fund lagged over the entire period. A fund can show a low, stable shortfall, while another can have a less consistent gap that happens to produce a similar cumulative result.
Formula conventions, annualisation, observation frequency and look-back window matter. Compare three-year tracking error with another three-year figure calculated from the same type of data, rather than placing a six-month number beside a three-year number and treating them as equivalent.
Tracking difference: the realised return gap
Tracking difference is the fund’s benchmark-relative return gap over a selected period. If a fund returned 11% and its matching benchmark returned 11.4% over the same period, the tracking difference would be approximately negative 0.4 percentage points before considering how each provider defines the comparison.
Read tracking difference alongside tracking error. A small but persistently negative difference may reflect recurring expenses and operating frictions even when the fund tracks consistently. A fund with a wider pattern of month-to-month deviations may show a different cumulative gap. Check the period, benchmark version, return basis and reporting date for every number.
Total expense ratio (TER)
TER represents recurring scheme expenses reflected in the NAV. It is an important contributor to the return gap, but not the only one. Cash balances, subscriptions and redemptions, transaction timing, brokerage, statutory levies, corporate actions and changes in index constituents can all affect realised performance relative to the benchmark.

A headline figure may be a base expense ratio, may exclude specified costs, or may belong to a different plan or date. Treat it as a dated operating cost, not a permanent promise.
Assets under management (AUM)
AUM shows the scale of a scheme at a particular reporting date. Greater scale can provide context when you assess liquidity, operating history and the fund’s ability to handle flows, but size alone does not establish better tracking, lower risk or suitability. A smaller scheme is not automatically inferior, and a large scheme can still have an avoidable tracking gap.

A practical comparison process
1. Confirm the exact benchmark
Start with the scheme’s stated benchmark name and whether returns are compared with the price index or TRI. Restrict your shortlist to funds tracking the same Nifty 50 benchmark. A comparison is meaningless if one fund follows a different index, uses a different return basis or reports against a benchmark that has changed.
Read the scheme information document and the latest factsheet for the benchmark designation. If a document is unclear, do not infer equivalence from a similar-sounding fund name.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Match the plan type
Compare Direct plans with Direct plans and Regular plans with Regular plans. Direct and Regular plans can hold the same underlying portfolio but have different cost structures. Mixing them can make one fund appear cheaper or more efficient simply because you compared unlike plans.
Record the plan, option and growth or income-distribution choice you are considering. The TER, minimum investment, exit load and other terms can differ by plan or option, so the scheme document—not a generic comparison page—should control your decision.
3. Compare tracking error on matching periods
Collect the published tracking-error figure for each candidate, noting the observation period, annualisation, benchmark and source. Three-year figures are usually more informative about recurring implementation than a very short window, but a longer period can include market conditions or scheme changes that a newer fund has not experienced.
Do not rank a fund solely on a tiny numerical difference. First check that the values were calculated under comparable conventions. Then look for a stable history rather than one unusually favourable reporting period.

4. Check tracking difference
Find the fund’s benchmark-relative performance for the same period and return basis. A fund may have a modest tracking error but a steady negative tracking difference. Another may have a less even path but a similar net gap. Both pieces of information are needed to understand replication.
When reading a factsheet, check whether the performance is shown after expenses, whether the index is a TRI, and whether the fund and benchmark dates line up. If the dates differ, label the figures as non-comparable rather than adjusting them mentally.
5. Record the latest TER
Use the current TER disclosure for the exact plan. Record the effective date or reporting date next to the percentage. A TER can change, so an old factsheet is not evidence of today’s cost.

Remember that an apparently low TER does not guarantee the smallest tracking difference. Cash drag, dealing costs, rebalancing, taxes, statutory charges and the timing of investor flows may offset part of the apparent cost advantage.
6. Use AUM as context
Write down AUM and its reporting date, then consider it with the fund’s history, tracking statistics and portfolio disclosures. A sharp change in AUM can affect the amount of cash the scheme must deploy or raise, but AUM by itself cannot tell you whether the fund is well managed or appropriate for your investment horizon.
7. Inspect portfolio replication
Compare the disclosed portfolio with the Nifty 50 constituents and weights, allowing for reporting-date differences. Look for cash holdings, securities-lending or other permitted positions, and explanations for deviations. NSE notes that flows, cash balances, constituent changes and corporate actions can create differences even when a scheme is designed to replicate the index.
Do not expect the holdings list to match the index perfectly on every day. The index can rebalance, a company can undergo a corporate action, and subscriptions or redemptions can arrive between portfolio-dealing points.
8. Verify scheme terms before investing
Before placing an order, recheck the latest scheme information document, factsheet and applicable disclosures for:

- Whether the fund is open-ended and the dealing or cut-off rules that apply to your transaction.
- The exact plan, option and benchmark.

SEBI points investors to AMFI resources for scheme performance, AUM, NAV history and monthly factsheets. Use those current disclosures and the asset-management company’s own documents rather than relying on an undated ranking.
How replication creates a return gap
Index funds do not buy and sell in a frictionless spreadsheet. New subscriptions may leave cash temporarily uninvested; redemptions may require selling securities; and large flows can force transactions at prices that differ from the index calculation. Brokerage, bid-ask spreads, statutory levies and taxes on transactions can also affect NAV.
Index rebalances create another timing issue. The benchmark provider announces constituent additions, deletions or weight changes, while the fund must trade around the effective date. Corporate actions such as dividends, mergers, splits or rights issues require operational processing. A fund can therefore deviate from the benchmark for reasons that are not captured by TER alone.
These effects explain why the most useful review combines the expense ratio, tracking error, tracking difference and portfolio disclosures. No single number identifies every source of deviation.

A dated example of how to read a factsheet
Franklin Templeton India’s factsheet for Franklin India NSE Nifty 50 Index Fund reports data as of 31 August 2026. It lists a base expense ratio of 0.55% for the base plan, a Direct base expense ratio of 0.24%, and a three-year tracking error of 0.13%.
The factsheet states that its base expense ratio excludes brokerage, transaction costs and statutory levies, which are charged additionally at actuals. That qualification is part of the figure. The numbers are scheme-specific and date-specific; they should not be treated as current after 31 August 2026, generalised to other Nifty 50 funds, or interpreted as a recommendation.
| Reported item | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Base-plan base expense ratio | 0.55% | As of 31 August 2026; excludes brokerage, transaction costs and statutory levies charged additionally at actuals. |
| Direct-plan base expense ratio | 0.24% | As of 31 August 2026; same factsheet qualification on excluded costs. |
| Three-year tracking error | 0.13% | As of 31 August 2026; the factsheet’s stated period and calculation convention apply. |
The correct use of this example is methodological: identify the plan, date, metric definition and exclusions before comparing it with another fund’s disclosure. It is not evidence that the scheme will have the lowest TER or tracking error at a later date.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing the lowest headline TER
A lower TER can help, but it does not include every source of benchmark deviation. Compare the realised tracking difference and tracking-error history after confirming that the plans and periods match.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsComparing Direct and Regular plans together
This produces an unfair cost comparison. Put each plan in its own shortlist and compare like with like.
Treating AUM as a quality score
Large AUM may indicate scale, but it cannot replace an examination of replication, disclosures and costs. Use AUM as context with a reporting date attached.
Using recent return rankings
A recent return can reflect a different benchmark basis, a short measurement window or temporary trading conditions. Index-fund selection is about repeatable closeness to the benchmark, not a permanent ranking of past returns.
Ignoring the benchmark definition
Price-index and TRI comparisons answer different questions. Confirm the benchmark and return basis before calculating a gap.
Reading an old factsheet as current
TER, AUM, tracking statistics and scheme terms change. Record every figure’s date and retrieve the latest disclosure before investing or switching.
Best Value
Assuming a perfect holdings match every day
Flows, cash, rebalances and corporate actions create legitimate short-term differences. Investigate persistent or unusually large deviations through the fund’s explanations and longer-period statistics rather than judging from one portfolio snapshot.
A decision framework for different investors
If two funds have similar tracking histories
Prefer the one whose current plan-specific TER is competitive, whose disclosures are clear and current, and whose minimums and loads fit your transaction. Do not manufacture a winner from a difference that is smaller than the uncertainty created by different calculation periods.
If one fund is newer
Recognise that it may not have a comparable three-year tracking record. Examine the available period, portfolio replication, benchmark mandate, TER and operational disclosures, and label the missing history as a limitation rather than assuming either superior or inferior execution.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If one fund is much larger
Use the larger AUM as evidence of scale only. Check whether its tracking statistics and current TER remain competitive. AUM should not override a persistent tracking gap or a plan mismatch.
If costs and tracking results point in different directions
Investigate the reason. A higher TER may be offset by tighter implementation, while a low TER may coexist with cash drag or trading friction. Review the same-period tracking difference, tracking error and explanatory notes before deciding.
What to monitor after you invest
Index-fund selection is not a one-time ranking exercise. At a practical review interval, retrieve the latest factsheet and daily TER disclosure, then note:
- Whether the benchmark name and TRI or price-index basis are unchanged.
- The current plan-specific TER.
- Updated tracking error and tracking difference periods.
- AUM and its reporting date.
- Any material change to replication policy, merger, scheme document or exit-load terms.
Do not trade solely because a single month’s gap moved. First check whether the benchmark rebalanced, a corporate action occurred, or unusual flows affected the portfolio. A persistent change across comparable periods deserves more attention than one isolated observation.
Where to verify the numbers
Use the asset-management company’s latest factsheet and scheme documents for the fund-specific TER, tracking statistics, portfolio and AUM. Use AMFI’s scheme-performance, AUM, NAV-history and monthly-factsheet resources, which SEBI identifies for investor reference. Use NSE’s index methodology and index information for the benchmark’s construction and return basis. Keep a dated copy or record of each disclosure so that a future comparison does not mix old and new figures.
If a comparison website displays a ranking or percentage without a calculation date, plan label, benchmark definition or source document, treat it as a lead to verify—not as a decision rule.
