How to Choose a New Game Franchise to Follow

The best franchise to follow is not automatically the most popular one. Choose the series whose core activity, tone, entry point, social format, cost, platform access and release pattern match the kind of play you can realistically repeat. Start by defining the experience you want, shortlist several candidates, sample one accessible entry, then commit only after it passes a practical scorecard.

This method works whether you want a finite story, an endlessly updated competitive game, cooperative sessions with friends, or a world you can explore at your own pace.

What it means to follow a game franchise

Following a franchise is a long-term choice about how you spend gaming time. You are not choosing only one title; you are choosing a likely sequence of games, expansions, communities, hardware requirements and purchases. A series can become a dependable source of familiar mechanics and characters, but it can also consume more money and time than a one-off game.

Think of a franchise as a repeatable play pattern. Some series are built around a continuing story, some around mastery of a competitive ruleset, and others around collecting, building, solving or socializing. The right choice is the one whose repeatable activity still sounds appealing after the novelty of the first game fades.

1. Define the experience you want to repeat

Write one sentence before looking at store rankings: “I want games that let me…” Complete it with the activity, the mood and the people you expect to play with. This prevents popularity from deciding for you.

Choose the primary activity

  • Follow a story: You want characters, plot progression and a sense of completion.
  • Explore a world: You prefer discovery, optional locations, lore and self-directed goals.
  • Compete: You enjoy measurable improvement, ranked play, matches or tournaments.
  • Cooperate: You want missions or campaigns that work with a regular group.
  • Build and manage: You like planning systems, economies, bases, teams or cities.
  • Solve puzzles: You value deduction, experimentation and carefully designed challenges.
  • Play a sport or race: You want short sessions, familiar rules and repeatable competition.

PlayStation’s editorial collections use categories such as couch multiplayer, cozy games, family games, MMOs, racing and team shooters. Those categories are useful starting points because they describe what you do, not merely the fictional setting.

Set your tone boundaries

Two games can share a genre while feeling completely different. Note whether you want something relaxed or stressful, hopeful or bleak, realistic or fantastical, humorous or serious, and short-session friendly or absorbing enough for long evenings. A franchise that matches your mechanics but conflicts with your tone will be difficult to follow consistently.

Decide how much structure you need

Ask whether you want a guided sequence or a sandbox. A linear series can make it easy to know what to play next. An open-ended series may offer hundreds of hours but requires more self-direction. Neither is inherently better; the useful distinction is whether you want the game to provide your next goal or let you invent it.

2. Build a shortlist without letting algorithms choose for you

Collect three to five candidates from several sources rather than selecting the first recommendation you see. Use a storefront, platform editorial collections, specialist curators and friends whose tastes you understand.

Use storefront discovery tools deliberately

Steam provides a Discovery Queue, friend suggestions and curator recommendations. Its storefront also lets you wishlist, follow or ignore games. Treat these features as a way to gather candidates, not as proof that a series suits you.

Steam says its recommender learns patterns from player behavior and exposes controls related to release windows and popularity. Tags can filter what you see, but Steam explains that tags are not used by the underlying recommendation model. Consequently, search filters and recommendation feeds can miss an excellent match or show a popular mismatch. Read the game descriptions and community information before deciding.

Ask friends for reasons, not verdicts

When someone recommends a series, ask what they actually do during a normal session, how long a typical session lasts and what frustrates them. “You would love it” is less useful than “the campaign is cooperative, missions take about an hour and the learning curve is steep.” A friend’s platform, schedule and tolerance for repetition may differ from yours.

Record a reason for every candidate

For each series, write one attraction and one concern. For example: “The tactical combat appeals to me; I may not have time for its long campaigns.” This simple note keeps the shortlist balanced and exposes uncertainty that a store page may hide.

3. Compare each franchise on the questions that affect commitment

Use the same questions for every candidate. A consistent comparison is more reliable than judging one series by a trailer and another by a detailed review.

Decision axis Questions to answer What a satisfactory answer looks like
Activity and tone What do you do most often, and does the mood fit your preferences? You can describe the normal session in one sentence and want to repeat it.
Newcomer entry Can you begin with a current or recommended entry without playing every predecessor? The series offers a clear starting point, recap or self-contained installment.
Time commitment How long is a useful session, and how much total time does the entry demand? The expected commitment fits your weekly schedule rather than an idealized one.
Cost to sample Can you try it through a demo, owned copy, borrowing or a subscription catalog? You have a low-risk way to test the actual gameplay before buying more.
Platform access Does the specific entry run on your hardware, account and region? You have confirmed the current listing, edition and requirements.
Social format Is it primarily solo, cooperative or competitive, and does that match your available group? The mode you want is supported without relying on an unavailable friend schedule.
Release pattern Do you want a finished story, occasional sequels or an ongoing service and community? The series’ update rhythm matches your willingness to return.

4. Check whether a newcomer can enter comfortably

Chronology is not the same as accessibility. A franchise may have many numbered releases but still offer a welcoming starting point. Conversely, a series with a simple title may assume knowledge of older systems or story events.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the practical entry point

  1. List the newest mainline release and the entry most often described as a starting point by the platform or publisher.
  2. Check whether the game includes a story recap, tutorial or glossary.
  3. Look for editions that bundle required expansions or separate them clearly.
  4. Read recent player comments for warnings about outdated controls, inaccessible servers or missing features.
  5. Confirm that choosing the recommended entry will not require immediately purchasing several older games.

If the appeal is mainly narrative, playing in release order may preserve character and system development. If the appeal is mechanics or competition, the newest healthy version may be the more sensible starting point. Make that choice consciously instead of assuming “start at number one” is always correct.

Watch for inherited complexity

Long-running series often accumulate mechanics, menus and terminology. A newcomer-friendly tutorial does not guarantee a simple game. Watch a short, unedited gameplay segment or use a trial period to see whether the interface explains its systems clearly enough for you.

5. Calculate the real time and money required to try it

Separate the cost of sampling one entry from the cost of following the franchise. A low-priced first game can lead to expensive expansions, frequent releases or paid online access; a premium game can provide years of play without requiring every sequel.

Make a personal commitment estimate

Write down the number of evenings or sessions you can realistically offer each week. Then classify the candidate as short-session, regular-session or long-session based on the way you expect to play. This is your planning label, not a published playtime statistic. Use it to reject games that demand a schedule you do not have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a low-risk sample

Possible sampling routes include a demo, a game you already own, a borrowed copy or a subscription catalog. Xbox describes Game Pass as a catalog with games added over time. That description does not establish that a particular franchise entry is currently included, nor does it establish the terms available in your region, so check the exact title listing before relying on it.

  1. Confirm the exact game, edition and platform you can access.
  2. Set a trial limit you can afford, such as one evening or a fixed number of sessions.
  3. Play the opening tutorial and one ordinary activity, not only a cinematic introduction.
  4. Note whether you are curious about the next session or merely determined to finish the test.
  5. Stop if the core loop is unpleasant; extra content rarely fixes a fundamental mismatch.

Include non-price costs

Account setup, required downloads, storage, patches, online subscriptions, voice-chat expectations and a regular group can all affect whether a game is practical. Record these alongside the purchase price. If a series requires coordination with friends who are rarely online at the same time, its nominal price understates its real cost to you.

6. Match the social format to your actual life

Do not select a cooperative or competitive franchise solely because you like the idea of playing with others. Determine how the game behaves when nobody else is available.

Solo-first series

A solo-first franchise is easier to fit around changing schedules. Check whether progress pauses cleanly, whether missions can be completed in short sessions and whether difficulty options support your preferred pace.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cooperative series

Find out whether cooperation is optional, how many players are supported and whether mixed skill levels are comfortable. A game that requires a fixed group may be rewarding but difficult to maintain. Verify whether matchmaking can replace absent friends and whether communication is essential.

Competitive series

Look beyond the headline mode. Check the availability of unranked play, practice tools, skill matching and penalties for leaving. Consider whether you enjoy the learning process as much as winning. Competitive communities and balance rules can change, so treat the current environment as something to recheck before committing.

7. Verify platform, region and edition details

Platform availability is a property of a specific game and edition, not necessarily of the franchise as a whole. A series may appear on several systems while a particular entry, expansion or online feature is limited to one of them.

  • Check the current storefront listing for your exact platform.
  • Confirm language, age-rating and account-region restrictions.
  • Check whether cross-play or cross-save covers the people and devices you intend to use.
  • Review hardware requirements, storage space and peripheral needs.
  • Look for server or online-service notices if the game depends on live connectivity.

Platform editorial pages can help you discover categories and themes, but they are not a substitute for checking the individual product listing. Store catalogs, licensing and subscription terms change, so verify these details immediately before purchase or download.

8. Decide between a finite story and an ongoing franchise

Choose a finite arc when you want closure

A finite story suits players who want to reach an ending and move to something else. It can be easier to schedule and budget because the main commitment is visible. Ask whether later installments continue the same characters or simply reuse the setting; that affects whether you need to follow every release.

Choose an ongoing community when you want continuity

An ongoing series can provide regular updates, seasonal goals and a large player population. It also asks you to tolerate balance changes, changing content and the possibility that your preferred mode becomes less active. Follow one when returning to the same ruleset sounds rewarding, not because stopping would mean missing out.

Check the release rhythm

Look for evidence of how often new entries or major updates arrive. You do not need a precise prediction; you need to know whether the series is quiet, occasional or continuously updated. Your preferred rhythm should match your attention span and budget.

9. Use a simple scorecard, then apply a veto

Score each candidate from 0 to 5 on activity and tone, entry accessibility, sample cost, time fit, platform access, social fit and release pattern. These scores are a personal decision aid, not a validated ranking formula. Add the scores only after writing a sentence of evidence for each one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then apply vetoes. Reject a candidate if any non-negotiable condition fails, such as unavailable hardware, an unwanted online requirement, an unsuitable rating, an inaccessible region or a social format you cannot use. A high total cannot compensate for a deal-breaking problem.

Example scorecard questions

  • Activity and tone: Would I choose this activity on an ordinary weeknight?
  • Entry: Can I understand the premise and controls without a homework list?
  • Sample: Can I test the core loop without committing to the entire series?
  • Time: Can I make progress in the sessions I actually have?
  • Platform: Is the exact edition available to me now?
  • Social: Does it work with my real group or alone when necessary?
  • Future: Do I want a finished journey or an ongoing reason to return?

10. Follow the franchise after you have chosen

Do not follow every candidate indefinitely. Once one passes your scorecard and trial, use the platform’s follow tools to reduce the work of tracking future releases.

Steam says following a franchise can produce email notifications when a game in that franchise releases or enters or leaves Early Access. Its storefront can also surface related games in the same franchise. Set notifications deliberately so that they inform you without turning every announcement into an obligation.

Keep a short note about what you liked in the first entry. When a sequel is announced, compare its confirmed features with that note. This helps you evaluate the new game on your needs rather than on launch excitement.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by popularity alone

Symptom: You buy a famous series and lose interest quickly.
Correction: Return to the activity sentence. If the normal session does not appeal, popularity is irrelevant.

Starting with the oldest release automatically

Symptom: Outdated controls or missing tutorials prevent you from reaching the series’ strengths.
Correction: Compare release order with the most accessible entry and decide whether story continuity or modern usability matters more.

Confusing a good trailer with a good routine

Symptom: The opening looks exciting, but ordinary missions feel repetitive or stressful.
Correction: Sample a normal activity and evaluate the core loop, not the presentation.

Ignoring the group requirement

Symptom: You own the game but rarely play because partners are unavailable.
Correction: Confirm solo functionality, matchmaking and realistic shared schedules before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating a subscription catalog as permanent ownership

Symptom: A game disappears or becomes unavailable under changed catalog terms.
Correction: Check the current listing and decide whether your plan still works if access changes.

Following announcements instead of playing

Symptom: You subscribe to every notification but never finish or enjoy an entry.
Correction: Use alerts to find releases, then apply the same activity, time and cost tests to each new game.

A practical one-evening decision plan

  1. Write the activity, tone and social format you want.
  2. Build a shortlist of three to five franchises from storefronts, platform collections, curators and trusted friends.
  3. Eliminate candidates that fail your platform, region, rating or online requirements.
  4. Research the newcomer entry point and note any required earlier games.
  5. Find the lowest-risk way to sample each remaining candidate.
  6. Play an ordinary activity, not just the opening sequence.
  7. Score the survivors and apply your non-negotiable vetoes.
  8. Choose one franchise, follow it where the platform supports that feature and reassess future entries individually.

The result should be a series you can explain in practical terms: what you do, how it feels, how you enter, how much time and money a trial needs, who you play with and what kind of future you want from it. That is a stronger basis for a long-term choice than a popularity chart or a single recommendation.
