Choose a PC monitor by matching it to the work you do, the computer that will drive it, and the space where it will sit. Then compare screen size and resolution, panel characteristics, refresh rate, HDR support, connections, and adjustability. No single configuration suits everyone; check that the exact display mode and features you want are supported by both the monitor and your PC.
Start with your workload, PC, and desk
Before comparing specifications, decide what the display needs to do. Office work, gaming, content creation, and mixed use can place different demands on motion handling, color, contrast, and screen space. Your computer matters just as much: a monitor may advertise a resolution, refresh rate, or HDR feature that the PC cannot output in the way you expect.

Measure the available desk space and consider how far you sit from the screen. Include the stand in your measurements, and account for any speakers, laptop, or other equipment that shares the desk. For a laptop setup, note which video outputs it has and whether you need it to charge through the monitor.

LG’s monitor buying guide outlines these same broad selection factors, including tasks, computer hardware, space, display characteristics, connectivity, and ergonomics. Treat its panel descriptions as general guidance, not a substitute for checking a particular model’s specifications or independent measurements.

Compare size, resolution, and scaling together
Screen size and resolution are different decisions. Resolution describes how many pixels form the image; size describes the physical dimensions of the screen. Sharpness depends on both, as well as viewing distance and how your operating system scales text and interface elements.
A larger screen does not automatically mean a sharper image, and a higher resolution does not automatically make everything easier to read. Consider how much workspace you need, how far away you sit, and whether you are comfortable changing display scaling. There is no universal size-and-resolution pairing that fits every desk or user.
- For a compact desk, check the screen’s actual width and height, including its stand, rather than relying on the diagonal measurement alone.
- For detailed work or multiple windows, consider whether the resolution gives you useful workspace at a comfortable text size.
- For any candidate, check the PC’s supported output resolution and the connection you plan to use.
Choose panel characteristics for the image you want
Panel labels can help narrow choices, but they do not guarantee a specific monitor’s image quality. LG describes IPS as a broad fit for wide viewing angles and color strengths, OLED for deep blacks and fast response, VA for strong contrast, and TN for response speed. Those are general tendencies; model design and implementation matter.

For a shortlist, compare the characteristics that matter to your use: viewing angles, contrast, color coverage and accuracy, and motion behavior. For color-critical work or a close gaming comparison, look for independent measurements of the exact model rather than relying on a panel-type label or a manufacturer’s broad description.
Match refresh rate and response to the PC
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the display can refresh its image each second. Higher refresh rates can make motion appear smoother, particularly in games, but the PC must be able to render and output the desired mode. A monitor’s maximum rate may also depend on its resolution and the connection in use.
LG identifies 60 Hz as common for everyday productivity and notes higher rates as an option for smoother motion. Before buying, check the monitor’s supported resolution-and-refresh combinations and compare them with the PC or laptop’s graphics capability and output specifications. Do not assume that a high number on the monitor’s product page will be available through every port or cable.

Response-time figures describe a different aspect of motion performance from refresh rate. Because manufacturers may use different measurement methods, avoid treating a single response-time number as a complete comparison. VESA cautions that displays can claim similar benefits while using different metrics or measurement methods in its display performance explainer.
Evaluate HDR by certification and the whole setup
A generic “HDR” label does not tell you how convincingly a monitor can display high-dynamic-range content. VESA’s DisplayHDR program defines performance categories involving luminance, color gamut, bit depth, and rise time. Its DisplayHDR overview and FAQ explain that HDR is independent of resolution and advise checking the certification tier instead of relying on a vague HDR claim.
HDR also depends on more than the monitor. The PC’s hardware, graphics connection, operating-system configuration, and the content must support the mode you want. Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guidance notes that HDR can reduce laptop battery life. Its HDR and wide-color troubleshooting guidance recommends checking display settings, supported connections, and graphics drivers when HDR is unavailable or behaves unexpectedly.

Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting documentation also describes a configuration in which HDR is not supported on an external display while it is duplicated; extending the desktop may be necessary. Exact behavior can depend on the Windows and hardware versions, so check the guidance for your setup.

Ports are a compatibility question, not just a checklist. Compare the PC’s outputs with the monitor’s inputs, then confirm that the connection supports the resolution, refresh rate, and other features you plan to use. An adapter or cable cannot add a video mode that the source, display, or connection does not support.

USB-C can carry video using DisplayPort over USB-C, along with USB data and power, but one-cable convenience depends on the capabilities of both devices. Check that the PC’s USB-C port supports the required video mode, and verify the monitor’s USB-C input and charging output against your laptop’s needs. DisplayPort’s USB-C overview describes up to 100 W as an interface-level capability; that is not a promise that every laptop-and-monitor combination supplies or accepts that power.

For any connection, verify the actual devices’ documentation for the supported mode and power delivery. If you need a cable or adapter, choose one only after confirming the ports and requirements at both ends.
Check ergonomics and installation
Adjustability affects everyday comfort and whether the monitor fits your workspace. Check whether the stand supports the height, tilt, and pivot adjustments you need. If you plan to use a separate arm or mount, verify that the monitor supports the required VESA mounting pattern and that the mount suits the monitor’s weight and your desk.
Also account for the stand or mount footprint, cable routing, and the space needed to position the screen at a comfortable viewing distance. A monitor that fits by diagonal size may still be awkward if its base occupies too much desk depth.

Once you have two or more viable displays, compare them against the same requirements rather than letting one headline specification decide the purchase.
- Use case: Does the display suit your primary work, gaming, content creation, or mixed use?
- Fit and clarity: Do size, resolution, viewing distance, pixel density, and operating-system scaling work together for you?
- Image and motion: Are panel characteristics, measured color and contrast, refresh modes, and motion behavior appropriate for your needs?
- HDR: Is there a specific certification tier, and can your PC, connection, Windows configuration, and content use it?
- Connectivity: Do the ports support your target mode, and does USB-C provide the video and charging capabilities you require?
- Ergonomics: Can the stand or mount place the screen where you want it, and will it fit the desk?
- Ownership terms: Compare current local prices and warranty terms directly; they vary by market and are not established here.
Manufacturer specifications are useful for confirming advertised compatibility, while independent, model-specific measurements help compare actual display performance. VESA’s performance explainer notes that similar-sounding claims may be based on different metrics or measurement methods.
