Choose a microSD card that uses the UHS-I interface, carries a V30 (or faster) video-speed rating, is formatted as exFAT, and has a capacity of 1TB or less. Insta360 warns that slower cards can interrupt recording or corrupt files, and its X Series compatibility guidance advises against UHS-II and UHS-III cards. The safest purchase is an exact model from Insta360’s tested list, such as the 256GB SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 (SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN) or 256GB Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER (LMS1066256-BN).
The requirements that matter
The X4 Air’s card requirement is more specific than simply buying a “fast” or “high-capacity” microSD card. Check all four characteristics before you buy:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Requirement | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Card type | microSD or TF | The camera is designed for the microSD form factor. |
| Interface | UHS-I | Insta360’s X Series FAQ warns against UHS-II and UHS-III cards because interface compatibility problems can prevent recording. |
| Video-speed class | V30 or higher | Insta360 says V30 or above is needed for normal recording; a slower card can cause interruptions or file corruption. |
| File system | exFAT | This is the format specified in the X4 Air storage guidance. |
| Capacity | Up to 1TB | 1TB is the manufacturer’s stated maximum supported capacity. |
A card that satisfies only some of these conditions is not a safe choice. For example, a card can have a high V-number but still use a UHS-II interface that Insta360 tells X Series owners to avoid. Check the interface, speed class, format and capacity as separate items.

Why UHS-I, V30 and exFAT are separate checks
UHS-I is the interface requirement
UHS-I identifies the card interface expected by the camera. UHS-II and UHS-III cards add different interface contacts and are not recommended by Insta360 for the X Series. A UHS-II or UHS-III card may look faster on its packaging, but that does not make it a compatible X4 Air card. If the label or listing clearly identifies UHS-II or UHS-III, choose another model.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
V30 is the minimum video-speed class
Look for the V30 symbol or a higher video-speed class on the card and its packaging. Insta360’s wording is “UHS-I and V30 or above” for normal recording. Treat V30 as the minimum target rather than an optional performance upgrade. A card marked only with a generic “fast,” “premium” or application-performance claim has not established the video-speed requirement by itself.
exFAT is the required file system
The card should be exFAT when used in the camera. A card that is otherwise suitable but formatted as another file system can fail recognition or recording. Formatting erases the card, so copy any files you need before performing it.
1TB is the capacity ceiling
The X4 Air supports microSD cards up to 1TB. That is a device limit, not a recommendation that every user needs a 1TB card. Capacity should match how often you can transfer footage and how much continuous recording you expect to do. Staying at or below 1TB avoids exceeding the stated support limit.
Insta360-tested card examples
Insta360’s X4 Air file-storage page lists particular cards and capacities that it tested. Use the complete model number, not only the family name, when comparing a listing with the compatibility table.
| Card family | Tested capacities identified in the compatibility information | Model details supplied by Insta360 |
|---|---|---|
| SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 | 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB | 64GB: SDSQXAH-064G-GN6GN; 128GB: SDSQXAA-128G-GN6GN; 256GB: SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN; 512GB: SDSQXA1-512G-ZN6MA; 1TB: SDSQXA1-1T00-ZN6MA |
| SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 A2 | 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB | Insta360 lists model numbers in its official table; match the exact capacity and model there before purchase. |
| Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER Series | 64GB through 512GB | The 256GB entry is LMS1066256-BN. Confirm the model and capacity against the current table. |
| Insta360-branded cards | Configurations listed by Insta360 | Use the capacity and model shown in the official compatibility table. |
| Some SanDisk V30 A1 models | Configurations listed by Insta360 | Check the exact model/capacity combination; the family name alone is not enough. |
These are tested examples, not a guarantee that every card sold under a family name is identical. Product lines change, regional listings can differ, and a retailer may show an incomplete or incorrect specification. Insta360 recommends its official memory card while also listing tested third-party cards.
Two straightforward 256GB choices
SanDisk Extreme V30 A2, 256GB
The tested 256GB model is SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN. This is a UHS-I, V30 card in the tested list, provided the listing and the physical card show that exact model. It is a sensible middle-capacity option for owners who want more space than 64GB or 128GB without choosing the largest card the camera supports.

Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER, 256GB
The tested 256GB Lexar model is LMS1066256-BN. Insta360’s compatibility information does not claim that this card records better or worse than the SanDisk example. Consider them alternatives, then decide using exact model match, trustworthy supply, return policy and price at the time you buy.
Do not treat a similar-looking model number, a different regional suffix or a different capacity as automatically equivalent. Verify the identifier printed on the card or shown in the detailed product specifications.
How to select the right capacity
Choose 64GB or 128GB for frequent offloading
Smaller cards can suit a workflow in which you regularly transfer recordings to a phone or computer. They also limit the amount of footage that could be lost if a card is damaged. The trade-off is that you must offload and clear the card more often.
Choose 256GB for a general-purpose balance
A 256GB card is a practical compromise for many owners: it is one of the explicitly tested capacities for both the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 and Lexar 1066x UHS-I SILVER examples. It gives more working room than the smallest capacities while remaining easy to replace and back up.
Choose 512GB when transfers are less frequent
A 512GB card can reduce the number of card-management interruptions for longer trips or shoots. It remains within the tested capacities listed for the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2, SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 A2 and Lexar 1066x UHS-I SILVER families. Larger capacity does not remove the need for backups; it can simply mean more footage is at risk if the card is lost or fails before transfer.

1TB is the maximum supported capacity. Insta360 lists 1TB entries for the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 and SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 A2 families. A 1TB card is useful when you cannot transfer files often, but it should be purchased only after confirming the exact 1TB model in the compatibility table. The manufacturer’s 1TB figure is a device specification, not a promise about recording duration.

A buying checklist that prevents compatibility mistakes
- Start with the device limit. Eliminate cards larger than 1TB.
- Confirm the physical format. The listing must identify a microSD or TF card, not a full-size SD card that requires an adapter.
- Confirm the interface. Select UHS-I. Reject UHS-II and UHS-III for this camera even when their other ratings look attractive.
- Confirm the video rating. Look for V30 or a higher video-speed class.
- Confirm the exact model number. Compare the complete identifier and capacity with Insta360’s tested table.
- Check the file-system plan. The card must be used as exFAT; plan to format it in the camera or Insta360 app before important recording.
- Buy from a source with a clear return policy. This helps if the delivered card does not match the advertised model or fails the camera’s recognition check.
Do not choose by the brand name alone. A manufacturer can sell several generations, speed classes and capacities under one family name, while Insta360’s tested list applies to the specific entries it identifies.
Preparing a new card before recording
Inspect the card and packaging
Before inserting it, compare the capacity, UHS-I marking, V30 marking and model identifier with the listing you intended to buy. If any detail conflicts, do not record important footage on it until the seller resolves the discrepancy.
Insert the card with the camera powered off
Use the X4 Air’s microSD slot and make sure the card is fully seated. Avoid removing or inserting a card while the camera is writing files. If the camera does not recognize it, proceed to the troubleshooting checks rather than repeatedly forcing the card in and out.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Format as exFAT in the camera or Insta360 app
Insta360 recommends formatting the microSD card through the camera or the Insta360 app as directed by its official guide. The exact screen wording can vary with firmware and app version, but the operation is the camera’s storage/card format command. Formatting deletes existing files, so complete a backup first. Formatting in the camera establishes the file system the camera expects and avoids relying on a computer’s default format choice.
Make a short test recording
Record a brief clip, stop normally, and verify that the file appears and can be played or transferred. A successful short test does not replace backups, but it can reveal an incompatible card before a longer shoot.
Backup and formatting routine
- Transfer regularly. Insta360 recommends moving recordings to a phone or computer on a regular basis.
- Verify the copy. Check that transferred files open before deleting them from the card.
- Keep working space available. Do not wait until the card is completely full to discover that a transfer is needed.
- Reformat in the camera or app. After files are safely stored, use the manufacturer-directed format process rather than repeatedly changing the card’s file system on a computer.
- Retire questionable cards. Repeated interruptions, corruption or recognition failures are reasons to stop using a card for important recording.
Capacity does not substitute for a backup strategy. A larger card can hold more footage, but a single card remains a single point of failure until the files exist elsewhere.

Troubleshooting an unrecognized or unreliable card
The camera does not recognize the card
Insta360’s troubleshooting guidance starts with four checks: verify that the card is microSD/TF, UHS-I, V30 and exFAT. Also confirm that its capacity is no more than 1TB and that the exact model appears in the tested compatibility information when possible.

- Power the camera down and reseat the card.
- Check the printed markings and model number against the required specifications.
- If the card was used in another device, copy any needed files and format it as exFAT using the camera or Insta360 app.
- Test the card in another device, as Insta360 suggests. This can help distinguish a card problem from a camera-recognition problem.
- Try a known-tested model if the original card still fails.
Recording stops or files are corrupted
A slower card can cause recording interruptions or file corruption. Confirm the V30-or-higher rating and UHS-I interface first. A card marked UHS-II or UHS-III is not a suitable workaround. Reformat the card after backing up files, then make a short test recording. If the same behavior returns, stop using that card for irreplaceable footage and test a model from Insta360’s compatibility list.
The card works in a computer but not in the camera
Computer recognition does not prove camera compatibility. The card may use the wrong interface, file system or speed class, or it may exceed the camera’s capacity limit. Apply the X4 Air-specific checks rather than relying on the computer test alone.
The card is listed as compatible but still fails
Recheck the complete identifier and capacity. A family name can cover several revisions, and a retailer listing may combine specifications from different models. Test the card in another device, reformat it through the camera or app, and retain purchase documentation in case the card is defective.
Common buying mistakes
Buying the fastest interface available
“Faster” is not automatically better here. Insta360 specifically warns against UHS-II and UHS-III for X Series cameras. Compatibility with the camera’s interface comes before a higher headline transfer rating.
Recommended Free Tools
Confusing A1 or A2 with the video requirement
A1 and A2 are application-performance labels. They do not replace the V30 requirement. The tested examples include A2 cards, but you should still confirm UHS-I and V30 or higher.

Assuming any 1TB card will work
The camera supports up to 1TB, but Insta360’s tested list identifies particular models and capacities. Match the exact 1TB model rather than buying an unlisted card solely because its capacity is within the limit.
Formatting only on a computer
A computer can leave the card in a format or partition arrangement the camera does not expect. Back up the files, then use the camera or Insta360 app’s format process.
Ignoring counterfeit or mismatched listings
Compare the delivered card’s markings and model number with the listing and compatibility table. If the details do not match, do not fill the card with important footage while you investigate.
What the official guidance does not establish
Insta360’s published compatibility material establishes the interface, speed class, file-system and capacity requirements and names tested models. It does not establish a recording-time figure for each capacity, a performance ranking between the listed brands, current retailer pricing, or current inventory. Recording duration will vary with camera settings and file content, so capacity alone cannot be converted into a reliable number of hours from the information available here.
The tested-card list also should not be read as a guarantee that every card sold under a listed family name is identical. Verify the model and capacity at the time of purchase, and keep the camera firmware and app behavior in mind if screen labels differ from older instructions.
Recommended decision
For the least complicated purchase, select an exact 256GB tested model: SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 SDSQXAV-256G-GN6GN or Lexar 1066x microSD UHS-I SILVER LMS1066256-BN. Choose 64GB or 128GB if you transfer files often, 512GB if you need more working space, or a tested 1TB model when infrequent transfers justify the maximum capacity. In every case, keep the card at UHS-I, V30 or higher, exFAT and no more than 1TB, then format it in the camera or Insta360 app before recording.
