How to Choose a microSD Card for Nintendo Switch Game Downloads

By Freedom251 Team · · 9 min read

For the original Nintendo Switch, choose a microSDXC card with UHS-I compatibility, a stated transfer speed in Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s recommended range, and enough capacity for the games, updates, and downloadable content you intend to keep installed. Cards from 64 GB through 2 TB are the relevant microSDXC range. If you own a Nintendo Switch 2, use a microSD Express card instead: a conventional Switch microSD card cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2.

Start by identifying your console

The correct card standard depends first on whether you have an original Nintendo Switch family system or a Nintendo Switch 2. The two consoles do not have the same requirement for digital-game storage.

Original Nintendo Switch

The original Switch supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards. For most people downloading games, microSDXC is the practical choice because it covers capacities from 64 GB to 2 TB. Nintendo lists the following ranges:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Card type Capacity range listed by Nintendo Use when choosing a game-download card
microSD Up to 2 GB Very small capacity; generally unsuitable for a modern digital library
microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB Limited space for downloaded software
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB The relevant range for most Switch game libraries

For an original Switch, look for the words microSDXC and UHS-I on the package. Nintendo’s support guidance recommends a transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s and says that a higher transfer speed is recommended to improve gameplay experience. That is a buying reference, not a promise that any retail card will deliver a particular loading time in a Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2

Switch 2 requires microSD Express to save or load digital games. A conventional microSD, microSDHC, microSDXC, or ordinary UHS-I card that works in an original Switch cannot perform that game-storage role on Switch 2. Nintendo lists support for microSD Express cards up to 2 TB.

Nintendo also says that an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used in Switch 2. Do not buy a card for Switch 2 unless the packaging explicitly identifies it as microSD Express.

Know what the card stores—and what it does not

A microSD card expands the space available for downloaded software. Nintendo identifies three categories that can be stored on the card:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Downloaded games and other downloadable software
  • Software update data
  • Downloadable content (DLC)

Game save data remains in the console’s system memory. Buying a larger card therefore gives you room for more installed downloads; it does not increase the amount of space available for save data. This distinction matters if you are choosing a card because the console reports limited storage while saving progress.

Choose capacity from your actual library plans

Nintendo documents the supported capacity range but does not designate one ideal size for a typical owner, provide a game-size calculator, or publish a standard number of games that fit on each card. Capacity should therefore be a planning decision rather than an assumed “best” specification.

Build a simple capacity estimate

  1. List the digital games you expect to keep installed. Include titles you already own and games you realistically expect to download during the card’s useful life.
  2. Add update and DLC headroom. A game’s initial download is not the only space it may use; leave room for updates and add-on content.
  3. Allow for growth. If you routinely rotate games, choose more capacity than your current list requires so that you are not forced to replace the card soon.
  4. Compare the price per unit of capacity. Divide the card’s price by its advertised gigabytes, then check whether the larger option gives useful room for your plans rather than paying for unused capacity.

A 256 GB card can be a reasonable example for someone building a moderate digital library, but Nintendo does not call 256 GB an official best choice. The same principle applies to 128 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB, or 2 TB: select the size that matches your downloads and budget within the console’s supported range.

Use the supported ranges as boundaries

If your card is labeled What that means for an original Switch What to remember
64 GB–2 TB microSDXC Inside Nintendo’s listed microSDXC capacity range Check UHS-I compatibility and the stated transfer speed
4–32 GB microSDHC Supported card family but limited capacity May be quickly exhausted by a digital library
More than 2 TB Outside the capacity ceiling stated by Nintendo Do not assume the console supports it

For Switch 2, apply the same library-planning approach but restrict your purchase to microSD Express and stay at or below the 2 TB limit identified by Nintendo.

Match the speed markings to Nintendo’s guidance

For an original Switch, UHS-I is the important interface marking to look for. Nintendo’s microSD Card FAQ recommends a 60–95 MB/s high-speed range and states: “In order to improve your gameplay experience, using a microSD card with a higher transfer speed is recommended.”

That statement supports comparing the transfer-speed figures printed on genuine card packaging. It does not establish that one retail model will achieve a specific real-world result in the console, nor does it rank brands or models. Treat a larger number on a package as a specification to compare, not as a guaranteed in-game loading measurement.

Do not confuse “faster” with a different card standard

MicroSD Express is a different requirement for Switch 2, not merely a faster label to seek for every original Switch. Nintendo says a microSD Express card can also be used in an original Switch, but its read and write speed there is equivalent to that of a microSD card. If you own the original console, a conventional UHS-I microSDXC card that meets Nintendo’s guidance is the relevant target; buying Express solely for the original system does not establish an additional performance benefit.

Compare cards using four practical checks

Once you know the console and the capacity you need, compare genuine options on the same criteria. Nintendo does not publish a comparative model ranking, so the decision is about compatibility and fit rather than finding a Nintendo-designated winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison check What to verify Why it matters
Console compatibility Original Switch: microSDXC and UHS-I; Switch 2: microSD Express The wrong standard may not save or load digital games
Capacity Enough space for planned downloads, updates, DLC, and growth; no more than 2 TB Prevents an early replacement or paying for unused space
Transfer speed For original Switch, compare the stated figure with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s guidance Higher transfer speed is Nintendo’s recommended gameplay-oriented criterion
Price per capacity Compare cost against advertised gigabytes, then inspect seller and package details Shows whether extra capacity is worth the price for your library

Read the complete label rather than relying on a product title. A listing that says only “memory card” does not tell you whether it is UHS-I, microSDXC, or microSD Express. The standard, capacity, and stated transfer-speed information should be visible in the seller’s description and on the package.

A buying procedure that avoids the common mistakes

  1. Check the console model. Confirm whether you have an original Switch or Switch 2 before opening a shopping page.
  2. Write down your storage goal. Count current downloads and planned purchases, then add room for updates, DLC, and growth.
  3. Select the card family. Choose microSDXC for an original Switch; choose microSD Express for Switch 2.
  4. Filter by capacity. Stay within the relevant Nintendo-supported range and the 2 TB ceiling.
  5. Check the speed marking. For an original Switch, look for UHS-I and compare the stated transfer speed with 60–95 MB/s.
  6. Check the package and seller information. Make sure the standard and capacity shown in the listing match the physical packaging and the card you will receive.
  7. Commit to one card. Nintendo recommends using a single card for software rather than dividing a library across several cards.
  8. For Switch 2, plan the first-use update. Nintendo says the first use of a microSD Express card requires an internet system update, so have the console online when you install it.

Why Nintendo recommends one card

Nintendo recommends using a single microSD card. Software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card. That means buying several smaller cards for different parts of a library can create a long-term management problem: the software remains divided, and Nintendo does not describe a simple consolidation process in the cited support guidance.

Choose one card with enough headroom for the library you intend to keep. If you already use multiple cards, preserve them as separate storage locations unless you have independently verified a transfer procedure for your particular setup; do not assume the console will merge their contents automatically.

Using an old card with Switch 2

Conventional original-Switch card

An ordinary microSD card used in an original Switch cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2. Switch 2 requires microSD Express for that purpose. The fact that the card physically fits does not make it compatible with Switch 2 game storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

microSD Express card

Nintendo says a microSD Express card can be used in an original Switch, although its read and write speed there is equivalent to a microSD card. If you are buying specifically for Switch 2, confirm the Express marking and the capacity limit. If you are buying for an original Switch only, Express is not required by the cited guidance.

Capacity examples without pretending Nintendo chose for you

The following examples are planning patterns, not Nintendo-approved sizes:

  • Small digital library: Choose the smallest microSDXC capacity that covers the games you intend to retain, while leaving room for updates and one or two future downloads.
  • Regular downloader: Move to a larger capacity when your current list plus planned growth would leave little free space. A 256 GB card is an example of a middle-size choice, not an official recommendation.
  • Mostly digital or long-term library: Compare 512 GB, 1 TB, and 2 TB options by price per capacity and the amount of software you realistically expect to keep installed.
  • Switch 2 owner: Apply the same planning method, but every option must be microSD Express and no larger than 2 TB.

Because Nintendo does not publish a typical game-size figure in the cited FAQ, avoid promises such as “this card holds a fixed number of games.” Actual use varies with each title, its updates, and its DLC.

Common buying errors and how to correct them

Buying a card for the wrong console

Symptom: You select a conventional microSDXC card for Switch 2 because it worked in an original Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Replace the requirement with microSD Express. Switch 2’s digital-game storage requirement is different.

Choosing capacity from a generic “best size” list

Symptom: You buy 256 GB, 512 GB, or another size without estimating your own library.

Correction: Treat those capacities as examples only. Count downloads, updates, DLC, and growth, then compare price per capacity.

Expecting the card to hold save data

Symptom: You purchase a larger card to solve a save-data storage problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: Remember that game save data remains in system memory; the card expands downloadable-software storage.

Correction: Use Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s guidance and UHS-I requirement as comparison points, but do not infer a specific real-world result for a particular retail card.

Ignoring the 2 TB ceiling

Symptom: You select a card larger than Nintendo’s stated maximum.

Correction: Stay at or below 2 TB for the supported microSDXC range on an original Switch and the supported microSD Express range on Switch 2.

Quick decision checklist

  • Have I identified the console as an original Switch or Switch 2?
  • For an original Switch, does the package say microSDXC and UHS-I?
  • For Switch 2, does the package explicitly say microSD Express?
  • Is the capacity between 64 GB and 2 TB for microSDXC, or within Switch 2’s 2 TB Express limit?
  • Have I compared the stated transfer speed with Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s guidance for the original Switch?
  • Did I include updates, DLC, and future downloads in my capacity estimate?
  • Am I clear that save data stays in system memory?
  • Am I choosing one card rather than planning to combine several later?
  • If this is for Switch 2, will the console be online for the required first-use system update?

The practical answer

For an original Nintendo Switch, buy one genuine microSDXC card in the capacity your download library needs, up to 2 TB, with UHS-I compatibility and a stated transfer speed that fits Nintendo’s 60–95 MB/s recommendation. Do not pay for a capacity you will not use, but leave enough room for updates, DLC, and growth. For Nintendo Switch 2, change the standard entirely: choose microSD Express, also up to 2 TB, and complete the required internet system update the first time the card is used.
