How to Choose a microSD Card for a Samsung Galaxy Phone: Capacity and Speed Explained

First check whether your exact Samsung Galaxy model has a microSD slot and what maximum capacity Samsung lists for your country and variant. Only then choose a card. For high-resolution video, Samsung recommends microSDXC; for photos and ordinary file storage, a lower-demand microSD or microSDHC card may be enough. A card does not make every Galaxy phone expandable, nor does it automatically become extra internal storage.

Check that your exact Galaxy model accepts a card

Not all Samsung phones support microSD cards. Some have only a SIM slot, and models such as the Galaxy S21 series and certain Galaxy Z phones are listed by Samsung as having no external memory. Tray layouts also differ: some phones have a hybrid tray that holds either two SIMs or one SIM and a microSD card.

  1. On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the product or model name. Samsung Japan specifies Settings > About phone > Product name.
  2. Look up that exact model on Samsung’s support or specifications page for your country and carrier variant. Samsung warns that specifications can differ by region.
  3. Confirm that the phone has a microSD slot, whether the slot shares space with a second SIM, and the maximum card capacity Samsung lists.
  4. Choose a card at or below that model’s stated maximum. A card’s 1TB or 1.5TB label does not prove that your phone supports it.

Samsung’s UK compatibility table is explicitly for the UK and Ireland. It lists some Galaxy S20 models up to 1TB and the S21 5G series without external memory; those figures should not be treated as universal specifications. Samsung Japan’s list is separate, includes its own unsupported models and capacity groups, and gives a 1.5TB maximum for a specific model grouping. Use the list for your market rather than combining regional entries.

Choose a capacity the phone supports

Samsung’s general guide groups cards by format: microSD is up to 2GB, microSDHC is up to 32GB, and microSDXC is above 32GB through 2TB. Those are card-family ranges, not a promise that any Galaxy phone accepts the family’s full range. The model-specific compatibility information takes precedence.

Estimate how much space you need for photos, video and other files, then compare that with the maximum for your handset. If you expect to record high-resolution video, Samsung recommends microSDXC on compatible devices. For still photos or basic file storage, Samsung says lower-demand microSD or microSDHC cards can be sufficient. Do not buy beyond the phone’s listed limit on the assumption that a newer or larger card will work.

Match the speed rating to what you do

Speed markings help describe a card, but they do not guarantee the speed a phone will achieve. Samsung’s general guidance lists Speed Class ratings 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, with higher numbers indicating faster performance. For video recording, pay attention to a card’s video-speed rating and sustained write capability; for ordinary photo storage, a top-tier card is not automatically necessary.

For example, Samsung’s 2024 PRO Plus data sheet, revision 2.1, lists Class 10, U3, V30 and A2, plus sequential read speeds up to 180MB/s and sequential write speeds up to 130MB/s. The sheet defines V30 as a sustained video-capture rate of 30MB/s. It also defines A2 as an application performance class with specified random I/O and sustained sequential-write measures. These are product specifications, not a benchmark of a Galaxy phone.

Samsung says those PRO Plus results were achieved with a Samsung SD card reader in controlled conditions; maximum rates require particular Samsung reader versions, and actual performance can vary with the host device and use conditions. A phone may not reach the advertised peak, and an A2 marking does not guarantee faster app operation on every handset. Choose for your workload and treat peak figures as card-and-test-condition claims, not a promise about phone performance.

Understand what the card can—and cannot—store

A microSD card is removable storage, not necessarily an extension of internal storage. Samsung says its Android devices do not support Adoptable storage, the feature that combines a card and internal storage into one volume. Storage behavior can vary by app; some apps may let you choose an SD card as the default location, but do not assume that apps can generally be installed or moved there.

Install the card without damaging the phone

Use the instructions for your exact handset because tray positions and layouts vary. Samsung’s setup guidance says to check whether the tray is hybrid and place the card in its designated position with the gold contacts facing down. Identify the tray outline before using the ejector tool; Samsung cautions against inserting it into microphone or speaker holes. Consult the phone’s manual if the tray position is unclear.

Decide whether you need an adapter or reader

If you regularly move files to a computer, a card reader or adapter can be useful. Check that the reader supports the card and its interface; the PRO Plus data sheet’s headline speeds depend on specified Samsung readers, so those figures should not be assumed for an arbitrary reader. The phone’s own compatibility and speed limits still apply when the card is installed in the handset.
