How to Choose a Matter Hub for a Mixed-Brand Smart Home

Pick the platform and app your household will actually use first, then choose a hub that supports the way your devices connect: Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or Matter over Thread. If you own any Thread devices, you also need a Thread border router. Some hubs combine that role with the Matter controller role, and some don’t. One Matter hub can work with devices from different brands, but “Matter compatible” doesn’t guarantee that every device type and feature appears the same way on every platform.

Controller versus Thread border router

These two jobs are easy to confuse, and the confusion causes most bad purchases.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Matter controller: the hub that manages a Matter device inside a platform after it has been onboarded. SmartThings defines it this way in its Matter support documentation.
  • Thread border router: the bridge that gives Thread devices access to the rest of your home network. Thread devices need one in addition to the controller. Amazon’s developer documentation says Thread-based devices require a Thread border router for commissioning.

Some hubs do both. Others handle only Wi-Fi or LAN Matter devices. Before buying, check whether the hub you are considering lists Thread support, not just “Matter support.”

Step 1: Choose the primary platform

Choose the app first. It is the one household members open every day, and the hub has to be eligible for that platform. Matter Multi-Admin lets a device be controlled from more than one Matter-certified platform, but you still need one platform that is your main home. Your hub choice follows from that.

It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Step 2: Match the hub to your devices’ transport

Sort your current and planned devices by how they connect:

  • Wi-Fi or Ethernet Matter devices: need a Matter controller on the same network.
  • Thread devices: need a controller plus a Thread border router, either built into one hub or added separately.

If you expect to buy Thread sensors, locks or similar devices later, favor a hub that supports both transports now. It is cheaper than replacing the hub.

Step 3: Check what each platform’s hubs support

Google Home

Google says you need a Matter-enabled hub to add Matter devices, control them locally and control them remotely while you’re away. Its Google Home and Nest Help page separates hubs into two groups:

Group Devices Google lists
Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread Google TV Streamer (4K), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E), Google Home Speaker (2026)
Matter over Wi-Fi only Nest Hub (1st gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini, among other Wi-Fi-capable devices

Google updates this list, so confirm it on the current support page before buying. If your home has Thread devices, the Wi-Fi-only group is not enough on its own.

Samsung SmartThings

SmartThings lists the SmartThings 2018 Hub and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Matter controllers. It states a firmware requirement of 45.9 or higher for the listed Samsung controllers, and gives Android and iOS app requirements for commissioning. The older SmartThings 2015 Hub supports Matter over Wi-Fi/LAN but has no Thread router. SmartThings says a separate Thread border router on the same Wi-Fi/LAN network can fill that gap. If you are reusing older equipment, check the exact model and firmware first.

Amazon Alexa

Amazon’s developer documentation says compatible Echo devices can connect Matter devices locally to Alexa, over both Wi-Fi and Thread. In Amazon’s words: “With Matter, smart home devices can connect directly to Alexa without a separate hub or smart home add-on.” The qualification matters: a supported Echo acts as the Matter administrator, and Thread devices still need a Thread border router. That page is developer documentation and doesn’t give a full consumer model list, so check Amazon’s current device pages for the exact Echo or eero model you plan to buy.

Apple Home and Home Assistant

Both support Matter, but hub-generation and hardware requirements differ by model and software version. Check Apple’s Matter accessory support page or the Home Assistant Matter integration documentation for current requirements before choosing hardware for either.

Step 4: Understand what Multi-Admin does and doesn’t do

Multi-Admin lets one Matter device be shared with several Matter-certified platforms. Google describes it as simultaneous control from multiple apps, including Apple Home and Amazon Alexa. SmartThings documents sharing an onboarded device with another platform while keeping it connected in SmartThings, and requires the other service’s app to be installed and set up.

Three limits apply:

  • Each platform has to be configured to receive the shared device. It isn’t automatic.
  • Each platform has to support that device category. Google notes that Matter-certified apps and platforms add device types on different schedules.
  • Sharing doesn’t guarantee that every feature of the device shows up identically in every app.

So before buying a device, check the Matter badge and the supported-device list of every platform you want to use it in.

  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Step 5: Check your network, especially IPv6

For Google Home, IPv6 must be enabled on your home network. Google says some Matter devices may work partly over IPv4, but they need IPv6 to communicate with all Matter-certified apps and devices. Google’s Home and Nest Help warns: “Without IPv6 enabled on your home wireless network, the setup process may initially appear to succeed at times. However, control and other functionalities eventually fail due to the lack of IPv6 support that’s required for the Matter technology to work properly.”

That means a setup that looks fine can fail later. Check your router’s current IPv6 setting, or ask your internet provider, before you consider buying a new router. Also make sure the hub and the devices are on the same appropriate home network.

Step 6: Don’t assume the hub covers older protocols

The Matter documentation from Google, SmartThings and Amazon covers Matter. It doesn’t establish that these hubs also control Zigbee, Z-Wave or proprietary devices. If your home has such devices, confirm that the specific hub supports them, or plan to keep their existing bridges. Don’t treat a Matter hub as a universal bridge for every legacy protocol.

Checklist before you buy

  • Which app will the household use daily?
  • Is the exact hub model, not just the product line, listed as a Matter controller for that platform?
  • Do you have, or will you buy, Thread devices? If so, does the hub include a Thread border router, or will you add one?
  • Does the platform currently support the device categories and features you want?
  • Do you want a second platform through Multi-Admin, and does each device allow it?
  • Is IPv6 enabled on your network?
  • Do you have legacy Zigbee, Z-Wave or proprietary devices that need separate support?
  • Do the hub’s firmware, phone OS and app versions meet the platform’s requirements in your region?

An example pick for Google Home households

If Google Home is your primary platform and you want one device that Google lists for both Wi-Fi and Thread, the Google TV Streamer (4K) is one option on Google’s list. It is a Google Home choice, not a universal best hub. If you prefer SmartThings or Alexa, compare the models each of those platforms lists.
