Compare the full cost of the trades and account you expect to use—including brokerage, demat account maintenance, charges when shares are sold, and statutory or exchange levies. Then confirm the provider’s current tariff and SEBI registration before opening an account.
What “low cost” means for a share investor
A broker’s advertised brokerage rate is only one part of your bill. Your overall cost depends on how often you buy and sell, the transaction type, the value of your holdings, whether you qualify for a Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA) rate, and whether you use optional services such as margin funding.

For a buy-and-hold investor, annual demat maintenance and the charges on occasional sales may matter more than the cost of frequent transactions. Someone who sells often, trades intraday, or borrows funds to trade needs to compare those specific charges too. A zero-brokerage offer does not by itself mean a trade or account is free: statutory and exchange or regulatory charges may still apply, and a delivery sale may trigger a depository participant (DP) charge.
Which charges to compare
Brokerage by transaction type
Check the tariff for the precise activity you plan to do, such as equity delivery or intraday trading. Do not assume the rate for one type of trade applies to another. If you may use margin trading, check its brokerage and funding interest separately.
#1 Best Overall
Demat account maintenance
Annual maintenance charges (AMC) can make a difference if you hold shares for a long time. Some accounts may qualify for BSDA pricing, which depends on eligibility and the value of holdings. Compare the applicable tier, not just the broker’s headline AMC.
DP charges on sales
When shares are debited from a demat account for a sale, a DP charge may apply even when delivery brokerage is zero. Check whether the tariff charges per eligible sale or per scrip, what components it includes, and whether it has an exemption for small debits.

- As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
- You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
- To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
Statutory, exchange and service charges
Review the official tariff for statutory and exchange or regulatory charges. Also check charges for services you expect to use, such as call-and-trade, pledging or unpledging shares, margin funding, and payment methods. Include only relevant services in your comparison, but do not mistake them for brokerage.
How to compare brokers for your own use
- Write down a realistic year of activity. Estimate the number and value of delivery buys and sales, any intraday trades, the holdings you expect to maintain, and any optional services you will use.
- Check account eligibility. Find out whether you qualify for a BSDA and which AMC tier would apply to your expected holdings.
- Use each broker’s official tariff. Compare brokerage for each transaction type, AMC, sale-related DP charges, statutory and exchange charges, and relevant service fees. For example, see Groww’s pricing page and Zerodha’s charges page.
- Apply the tariff to the same scenario. Estimate each provider’s annual charges using the same trades and account assumptions. Keep taxes and levies distinct from broker fees where the tariff identifies them, and do not infer a final order charge from a headline rate alone.
- Check service and support fit. Consider the platform, support channels, and account documents you need. Do not treat a feature list as proof that an app is more reliable or easier to use.
- Verify the provider and save the recourse route. Confirm SEBI registration and relevant exchange or depository details, read the account terms, and note how to raise a complaint.
