Choose a loot shooter by the way you want to spend your time, not by a genre label or a single “best game” verdict. If your ideal session is a coordinated, six-person raid, Destiny 2 is the closer fit. If you prefer four-player boss fights and the option to approach dungeons solo or with a smaller group, The First Descendant better matches that pattern. The decisive differences are group size, repeatable endgame activities, how clearly gear choices change your build, and what the live store asks you to buy.
The comparison below uses currently documented official features and separates advertised design from independently demonstrated performance. Both games are live services, so activity lists, rewards, access rules, and store contents can change; verify the current platform listing before spending money.

Start with your preferred play pattern
A loot shooter is a long-term loop: run an activity, earn equipment or materials, adjust a loadout, then run a harder or different activity. The right choice depends on which part of that loop you actually enjoy repeating.

Co-op: match the game to your group
Destiny 2: raid-scale coordination
Destiny 2’s official activity guide says raids typically require fireteams of up to six. That group size changes the social commitment: you are not merely bringing extra damage, but coordinating roles, communication, timing, and encounter mechanics with a larger team. If your regular group can reliably assemble several players and enjoys planned sessions, raid-scale content is a meaningful reason to choose Destiny 2.
Six is a typical maximum for raids, not a claim that every Destiny 2 activity uses six players. Other activities can have different participation rules, so check the activity description before assuming your entire group can enter together. The practical question is whether you want your progression to include content that expects a larger, coordinated fireteam.
The First Descendant: four-player boss encounters and smaller teams
The First Descendant’s PlayStation platform listing highlights four-player Colossi battles. A four-person cap creates a more compact co-op format: it is easier to fill with a few friends, and each player’s contribution is more visible than in a larger raid party. Choose this structure if your normal group is two to four people or if you prefer boss encounters over lengthy, raid-sized coordination.

Nexon’s developer notes also describe dungeon play as available solo or cooperatively, with difficulty scaling according to the number of participants. That gives a solo player a clearer route into the dungeon loop than a system built around mandatory large-group encounters. Scaling does not guarantee identical difficulty or rewards across every activity; treat it as the stated design approach and confirm the current activity rules in game.
Matchmaking versus planned sessions
Group-size information is only half of the co-op decision. Ask how often you want to rely on matchmaking, whether your friends play on the same platform, and how much voice communication you are willing to use. The official material reviewed establishes the raid, Colossi, and solo/co-op dungeon formats, but it does not provide a complete, current matchmaking quality comparison. Do not infer queue times or community health from player-count anecdotes.
- Choose raid-oriented play when your group can schedule sessions and enjoys learning encounters together.
- Choose four-player boss co-op when you want a smaller party with a clear target and shorter coordination chain.
- Choose solo-capable dungeon play when your schedule is irregular or you want progression that does not depend on friends being online.
Endgame: identify what you will repeat after the campaign
“Endgame” is not one activity. It is the collection of repeatable tasks that continues to provide useful rewards after the story loses its novelty. Compare the actual loop—what you launch, how difficulty changes, and what you receive—rather than assuming two games use the word in the same way.

Destiny 2: raids, Portal activities, and selectable challenge
Bungie’s activities guide groups Destiny 2’s repeatable content through raids and Portal activities. The Portal combines activities with selectable difficulties and modifiers. According to the guide, higher difficulty generally offers better gear, Power, and currencies. “Generally” matters: it describes the reward direction, not a guarantee that every run produces an upgrade or that every modifier is worthwhile for every build.
This structure suits players who like choosing a challenge level before a run and adapting to rule changes. Modifiers can alter how an activity is approached, while difficulty settings provide a reason to revisit familiar content. Raids add a distinct cooperative track for players who want encounter mechanics and coordinated team play.
Bungie’s activity-reward discussions also describe changes to reward pools and difficulty. Because those pools are live-service systems, an activity that is lucrative today can be adjusted later. Check the in-game Portal and the current official activity guide when deciding where to invest your time.
The First Descendant: Reclamation Operations and hard-mode rewards
Nexon’s developer note describes Reclamation Operations as endgame dungeons with distinct hard-mode rewards. This points to a dungeon-centered loop: select an operation, increase the challenge, and pursue rewards associated with the harder version. It is a good fit if you prefer repeatable missions and boss or dungeon objectives to raid-scale encounters.
The note describes design intentions and implementation plans, not a hands-on measurement of reward quality, completion time, or long-term variety. The existence of hard-mode rewards tells you that the activity is intended to support progression; it does not establish how many hours of variety the current roster provides or whether the rewards outperform every alternative.
A practical endgame test
- List the activity type you enjoy most: raids, selectable-difficulty missions, dungeons, or boss encounters.
- Check whether that activity awards the kind of progression you care about—gear, Power, currencies, or build components.
- Confirm the group requirement. A great activity is not useful if it regularly needs more players than you can assemble.
- Look at the current reward pool and access rules immediately before playing, because live-service rotations can change.
- Decide whether you enjoy repeating the activity itself, not merely obtaining its first clear reward.
Build variety: rarity is not the same as meaningful choice
How to read Destiny 2’s gear tiers
Bungie’s July 2, 2025 “Dev Insights – Weapons and Gear Tiering” article says new loot should provide meaningful choices and upgrades to an arsenal. The same discussion describes tiers as adding mechanical and buildcrafting options, including enhanced traits or mods. That means a higher tier can offer more ways to tune a loadout, not just a larger number.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Bungie also cautions that synergistic perks on lower-tier gear can outperform higher-tier gear. This is one of the most useful evaluation rules for any loot shooter: a drop’s value depends on how its effects interact with the rest of your build. A supposedly inferior item may be the correct choice if its perk combination supports your weapon, ability loop, or team role better than a higher-tier alternative.
When comparing Destiny 2 drops, inspect:
- What mechanical options the tier unlocks.
- Whether traits, mods, or perks reinforce the activity you intend to play.
- How a piece interacts with the rest of your loadout rather than its isolated tier.
- Whether the item creates a genuinely different play pattern or only a small numerical increase.
How to interpret The First Descendant’s customization claims
The First Descendant’s official product copy emphasizes unique character combat styles and customizable characters. That is useful evidence of a character-centered identity: you can expect the choice of character style to matter to how combat feels. However, the available official material does not provide a detailed, like-for-like breakdown of its build system, perk interactions, or the number of viable endgame configurations.
Do not turn “customizable characters” into a claim that the game has more or deeper builds than Destiny 2. Treat it as a broad platform description, then examine the current in-game character, module, weapon, and reward interfaces yourself before committing to a long-term grind.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuestions that reveal real build depth
- Can two players using the same character or weapon create noticeably different combat loops?
- Do gear effects change decisions during a mission, or only improve damage numbers?
- Are low-tier items with strong synergies worth keeping, or does the progression system automatically replace them?
- Can you understand why a build works from the game’s descriptions, or do you need external spreadsheets for every decision?
- Does the endgame reward experimentation, or does one configuration dominate the available activities?
Destiny 2 has explicit official evidence for tier-based buildcrafting and perk synergy. The First Descendant has official evidence for distinct character styles and customization, but not enough in the material reviewed to rank its detailed build variety against Destiny 2.
Monetization: separate the questions before you compare prices
“Is it free?” is too broad to be useful for a live-service game. Evaluate four separate costs: entry, paid expansions or access gates, optional cosmetics or convenience purchases, and anything that affects progression. A currency bundle price alone cannot answer all four.
The First Descendant’s Caliber listings
The PlayStation and Xbox listings advertise Caliber add-ons, with prices shown in US storefront listings. Those pages establish that paid virtual-currency bundles are offered, and that the amount and price can vary by platform and region. They do not establish the total amount a typical player must spend, the cost of every monetized item, or whether spending is required to complete the progression loop.

Do not convert a US bundle price into a universal cost. Taxes, currency conversion, platform pricing, and regional availability can change the amount charged.
Destiny 2: do not assume a like-for-like total
The official evidence available for this comparison does not provide a current, comparable total-cost account for Destiny 2. That means it would be misleading to publish a single “cheaper game” verdict. Destiny 2’s actual cost depends on the edition, expansions, access requirements, and the content you choose to play; verify those details on the current platform store.
Use the same checklist for both games. Compare the content you personally need, not the theoretical price of every release or store item. A player interested only in the base loop makes a different calculation from a player who wants every expansion and endgame activity.
Assess progression impact separately from cosmetics
Cosmetic purchases and progression-affecting purchases answer different questions. A store can be expensive without affecting combat power, or inexpensive while selling a shortcut that changes the time required to reach a goal. The cited listings confirm currency add-ons for The First Descendant but do not, by themselves, establish the full effect of every purchase. Inspect item descriptions and current terms before deciding whether the model fits your tolerance for monetization.

Both games are changing services, so a feature description is not a permanent guarantee. Bungie’s activity pages and reward discussions can change as activities rotate or systems are updated. Nexon’s developer notes describe intended dungeon and co-op structures; they are not independent tests of balance, queue health, technical performance, or reward satisfaction. Platform pages are advertisements for features and add-ons, not a controlled comparison.

No named population statistic was established by the official material reviewed. The four-player and six-player figures are activity group-size facts, not evidence of how many people are online or how quickly matchmaking will find a team. Likewise, no hands-on test supports claims about frame rate, mission length, drop rates, or comparative quality.
For a current purchase decision, check the official activity pages and your platform store close to the day you play. Confirm the live activity roster, reward descriptions, edition contents, regional prices, and any access gates.
A decision path for common player types
You have a regular group of five or six
Start with Destiny 2 if your group is excited by raid encounters and planned coordination. Its documented raid format is built around fireteams of up to six, making your group size an advantage rather than a compromise. Confirm that the current raid access and rewards match what your group wants before investing in a long progression cycle.
Recommended Free Tools
You usually play with one to three friends
The First Descendant’s advertised four-player Colossi battles fit a compact party. You can keep the group small while still having a clearly defined cooperative objective. Destiny 2 remains possible, but its raid format may require recruiting additional players for that specific part of the endgame.
You often play alone
Prioritize the First Descendant’s stated solo/co-op dungeon option and participant-based difficulty scaling. That design gives you a documented solo route into dungeon content. Still check the current rules for each activity; a solo-capable dungeon does not imply that every mission or reward is available alone.
You enjoy optimizing gear more than collecting characters
Destiny 2 has the clearer documented case for gear-tier decisions, enhanced traits or mods, and perk synergy. Its own guidance warns that a synergistic lower-tier item can beat a higher-tier alternative, which rewards deliberate loadout construction rather than automatic replacement.
You want distinct character identities first
The First Descendant’s official product description foregrounds unique character combat styles and customization. Choose it when that promise aligns with the way you want to experiment, but inspect the current systems in detail before assuming a specific level of build depth.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You are mainly worried about spending
Do not choose from a headline price. Compare the current base access, required paid content, currency bundles, and progression effects for your platform and region. The available evidence confirms Caliber add-ons for The First Descendant but does not support a complete total-cost comparison with Destiny 2.
Final checklist before you install or buy
- Write down your normal party size and whether you need a solo path.
- Choose the repeatable activity you would willingly play for dozens of sessions.
- Check the current difficulty and reward rules for that activity.
- Decide whether you prefer perk-and-gear optimization or character-style customization.
- Open your regional platform store and separate entry cost, paid content, optional purchases, and progression effects.
- Recheck live-service details immediately before purchase, since rosters, rewards, prices, and access requirements can change.
The best loot shooter is therefore conditional: Destiny 2 is the stronger match for raid-scale coordination, Portal-style selectable challenges, and explicitly documented gear/perk buildcrafting; The First Descendant is the stronger match for four-player Colossi fights, solo-or-co-op dungeon flexibility, and a character-style-focused presentation. Make the final call from the activity you will repeat and the spending model you can accept, not from a universal ranking.
