There is no guarantee that a company offering cryptocurrency tracing can recover stolen funds. Tracing may document where transactions went; it does not give a private company authority to seize cryptocurrency or compel an exchange to freeze it. To reduce the risk of losing more money, report the original fraud through official channels, preserve evidence, and carefully check any provider’s identity, scope, and fees before paying.
Tracing and recovery are different
A tracing provider may analyze blockchain transactions and prepare a report about apparent fund flows. That analysis is not the same as getting assets back: a private company cannot issue a seizure order. The FBI states, “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” An exchange may freeze an account through its own internal processes or in response to legal process, but a tracing report does not guarantee either outcome. The North Carolina Department of Justice likewise cautions that some tracing businesses “have no way of recovering your lost assets.” A report may be useful information, but do not treat it as a promise of return or as proof that a provider can make an exchange or law-enforcement agency act. Warning signs of a recovery scam
People already targeted by a cryptocurrency scam may be approached again by someone claiming to recover their money. The FBI and IC3 warn about recovery offers involving upfront fees, demands for further payments to release funds, inaccurate or incomplete reports, and false claims of affiliation with law enforcement or legal firms. Be especially wary if the offer arrives unsolicited or creates pressure to pay quickly. FBI IC3 advisory on cryptocurrency recovery fraud, August 11, 2023

IC3 says, “Law enforcement does not charge victims a fee for investigating crimes.” If someone says they represent law enforcement, independently contact the named agency using its published contact details; do not rely on the caller’s number, links, or documents. How to assess a paid provider
Use these questions for due diligence, not as a certification checklist. A satisfactory answer does not prove that a provider is legitimate, and the cited government guidance does not establish a universal license or accreditation for private cryptocurrency tracing firms or endorse any provider.

- Can you verify who is offering the service? Independently check the legal business identity and the names of staff. Do not rely only on a website, social profile, or documents sent by the person who contacted you.
- What exactly is included? Get a written description of the work and deliverables. Distinguish transaction analysis and reporting from legal representation or a claim to recover assets.
- Are fees and extra charges clear in writing? Ask what you will pay, when payment is due, and whether any additional charges could arise. Do not proceed if fees are vague or payments keep being demanded to unlock a promised return.
- Will the provider explain its methods and limits? Ask what information it will analyze, what its report can establish, and what it cannot make an exchange or authority do.
- Does it claim government or legal affiliation? Verify the claim directly with the named organization using contact details you locate independently.
- How will your information be handled? Ask what transaction records and personal information the provider needs and how it will use them. Do not share wallet seed phrases or private keys.
Stop if a provider guarantees recovery, pressures you after unsolicited contact, demands more transfers or escalating fees for a promised return, or asks for wallet secrets. None of the questions above is an official legal requirement or proof of legitimacy.
What to do after a cryptocurrency fraud
- Preserve evidence. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, dates, amounts, exchange details, messages, payment receipts, and any recovery offer, including the provider’s claims and payments you made.
- Contact the exchange through its official support channel. Provide relevant transaction details and ask whether it can take action. Find the support route independently rather than using contact information supplied by an unknown recovery contact.
- Report the original fraud promptly. In the United States, IC3 accepts cryptocurrency-related fraud reports. Include transaction information and relevant communications; report payments or messages connected to a later recovery offer as well. FBI guidance also recommends providing transaction details and contacting a local FBI field office where appropriate. IC3 cryptocurrency guidance and FBI guidance on cryptocurrency investment fraud
- Do not pay an unknown recovery contact or give them sensitive financial details. Verify any claimed agency affiliation directly before engaging.
The scale of reported losses underscores the need for caution: IC3 reported more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment fraud losses in 2022, in its August 11, 2023 advisory. That figure concerns reported investment-fraud losses, not the likely outcome of an individual case. FBI IC3 advisory, August 11, 2023

When legal advice may be relevant
The FBI notes that victims may choose civil litigation, but whether that is appropriate depends on the facts and jurisdiction. Consult qualified counsel in the relevant jurisdiction if you are considering a civil claim. A private tracing report is not, by itself, evidence that litigation will succeed or assets will be returned. FBI guidance on cryptocurrency recovery fraud
