Choose a laptop by starting with the work it must do and the total amount you can spend—not by buying the biggest specification you can afford. Check the requirements for your essential apps, then compare complete configurations for performance, memory, storage, screen, portability and compatibility. Windows 11 minimum requirements help determine whether a PC is eligible to run Windows; they are not a recommendation for a comfortable everyday laptop.
Start with what you need the laptop to do
Write down the applications and tasks you expect to use regularly: for example, web browsing, video calls, schoolwork, office documents, photo or video editing, or particular games. Check each application’s published system requirements before comparing laptops. Microsoft also advises buyers to verify the requirements for the programs they plan to use; its official laptop buying guide organizes recommendations by use case.

Separate essentials from occasional activities. A laptop mainly used for documents and browsing has different priorities from one expected to edit large video projects or run demanding games. Where an app or game specifies a processor, memory, graphics or operating-system requirement, use that as the starting point rather than relying on a broad rule of thumb.

Set a firm total budget
Decide how much you can spend on the complete setup, not just the laptop’s listed price. Account for any peripherals or accessories you know you need, such as a mouse, adapter or external storage. Microsoft’s Windows guidance puts the principle simply: “A smart budget focuses on features that support your daily use of a device.” The statement appears in a Microsoft Windows article dated April 9, 2026; it is buying guidance, not a model comparison or price survey. Read Microsoft’s budget and use guidance.

Once you have a ceiling, spend on the capabilities that affect your actual workload. Avoid paying extra for a higher-tier component unless an application, game or practical need benefits from it. Compare the full configuration: two laptops with a similar headline processor name may differ in memory, storage, display, ports or upgrade options.
Match the configuration to your workload
Processor and memory
Choose a processor capable of handling your applications, and consider how many tasks you tend to run at once. Microsoft’s use-case guide describes 8–16 GB of RAM for multitasking and 8–16 GB or more for students, while noting that creative work and gaming can call for higher or different specifications. These are Microsoft’s recommendations, not universal performance guarantees. Check demanding software’s own requirements and consider whether the laptop’s memory can be upgraded.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Microsoft says 8 GB can be adequate for light browsing and common tasks, while closer to 16 GB may help with editing and heavier activity. Treat that as a workload-based starting point: the right amount depends on the apps and files you use, and on whether you keep several demanding programs open together.
Storage
Think about how much you keep on the laptop itself. A person who relies on cloud storage and keeps few large files locally may need less capacity than someone with a sizable library of photos, videos or games. Microsoft’s guide makes this distinction between lighter cloud-oriented use and larger local collections. Check the storage required by your applications and games, then allow room for the files you expect to keep on the device.

Graphics
Do not assume every laptop needs discrete graphics. Pay for a separate graphics processor when the creative applications or games you actually use benefit from or require one. Microsoft’s creator and gamer profiles call out discrete graphics, but its guide also notes that requirements vary by program and game. Verify the specific software requirements before making graphics a budget priority.
Display and everyday comfort
Consider screen size, resolution and display quality in relation to how you work: a larger screen may be more comfortable for long sessions, while a smaller device may be easier to carry. Microsoft’s use-case guide includes display resolution among the factors to consider, but it does not establish one display specification as best for every user.

Balance portability, battery life and connections
Where you use the laptop changes what matters. If it moves between home, class, work and travel, weight and portability may deserve more of your budget. Battery life and comfort also matter, as Microsoft notes in its guidance on choosing a device for its context. That source does not provide independent runtime measurements for specific models, so compare model-specific battery tests only when the test conditions are clear.
Check the ports against the devices you plan to connect, including any monitor, storage drive, headset or other required peripheral. If a laptop lacks a connection you need, account for the adapter or dock in the total cost and consider whether carrying it would undermine the portability you want.

Check compatibility separately from buying suitability
Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements include a supported processor running at 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores, at least 4 GB of RAM, and at least 64 GB of storage, along with other requirements. These are minimum eligibility conditions, not sensible targets for every buyer. A laptop that meets them may still be a poor fit for your applications or workload.
Before buying, check Microsoft’s current list of supported processors and confirm the requirements of your essential programs with their publishers. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and requirements page also directs users to consult software publishers or manufacturers for additional application or hardware requirements.
Compare complete laptops, not isolated specifications
Once you have narrowed the choices to devices that can run your essential software, compare them at the same configuration level. Record the total price and the details that affect your use:

- Memory: installed RAM and whether it can be upgraded.
- Storage: SSD capacity relative to your local files and software.
- Screen: size, resolution and qualities that matter for your work.
- Mobility: weight and portability, plus battery evidence with its test conditions.
- Connections: available ports and any peripherals or adapters you need.
- Compatibility: operating-system support and the requirements of your applications.
- Purchase terms: warranty and return conditions for the specific seller and model.
Do not treat a battery-life number as directly comparable unless you know how it was measured. Likewise, compare the actual memory, SSD and display in each configuration rather than assuming every version of a laptop has the same parts.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- List your everyday tasks and essential apps. Include demanding or occasional software if the laptop must handle it.
- Check software requirements. Note any processor, RAM, storage, graphics or operating-system conditions.
- Set your total spending ceiling. Include required accessories and connections in the budget.
- Choose a workload-appropriate configuration. Prioritize processor, memory, storage and graphics only where your tasks benefit.
- Weigh mobility and comfort. Consider where you will use the laptop, how often you will carry it, and what battery evidence is available.
- Compare full configurations and purchase terms. Check ports, upgradeability, warranty and return terms before deciding.
