Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe best laptop brand is the one whose specific model runs your required software, delivers enough performance for your workload, fits your portability and screen needs, and includes support you can use where you live. A brand name is only a starting point: one manufacturer can sell basic everyday machines, gaming systems, business laptops, and premium creative models with very different hardware and prices.
Choose in this order: list your software and daily tasks, select an operating system, set a realistic total budget, define the processor, memory, storage, display and graphics you need, then compare exact configurations for warranty, support, ports, weight and battery expectations. The process below helps you avoid paying for specifications you will not use or buying a cheap configuration that cannot handle your work.

1. Start with your routine and required software
Write down what you actually do on a laptop during a normal week. Include every application, browser-based service, peripheral and file type that matters. ASUS recommends matching a laptop to your routine and checking software and accessory compatibility; that step should come before comparing logos.

- Applications: list office programs, development tools, design or video software, games, virtual machines and specialist work applications.
- Operating system: identify whether each application requires Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Linux or a particular version. A web app may work on several systems, while a desktop-only tool may not.
- Accessories: note printers, docks, drawing tablets, external displays, cameras, card readers and other devices. Check their drivers, connectors and operating-system support.
- Work pattern: record how many applications and browser tabs you keep open, whether you work away from outlets, and whether you carry the computer every day.
- Future needs: consider courses, jobs or projects you expect to take on during the laptop’s useful life.
Separate must-have requirements from preferences. A particular operating system or application compatibility is a constraint; a preferred color or keyboard layout is a preference. Eliminate any configuration that fails a must-have before scoring its other features.

2. Choose an operating system before a brand
Operating-system choice narrows the field more effectively than a brand ranking.
Windows
Windows laptops cover a wide range of prices, sizes and hardware, including systems with dedicated graphics. They are often the practical choice when a required application, game, engineering tool or company device-management system is Windows-specific. Confirm the exact edition and any application licensing requirements.
macOS
Choose a Mac laptop when your required software, peripherals and workflow are supported on macOS and you value integration with other devices in that ecosystem. Check compatibility for specialist Windows-only programs, games, plug-ins and accessories before buying.

Chromebooks are designed primarily around web applications and cloud storage. They can be a sensible fit for browsing, documents, email and school services that work in a browser or Android environment. Verify offline capability, storage needs and compatibility with desktop applications before treating one as a replacement for a Windows or macOS computer.
Linux and other installations
If you plan to install Linux or another operating system, check hardware support for Wi-Fi, graphics, fingerprint readers, sleep behavior and vendor firmware. Manufacturer warranty and support procedures may assume the preinstalled operating system, so understand what help remains available after a change.
3. Set a realistic total budget
Decide the maximum you can spend on the complete setup, not only the advertised laptop price. Include the exact memory and storage configuration, operating-system edition, taxes or delivery charges in your region, a protective case, a dock or adapter, and any required warranty extension or service plan.
Compare configurations, not product families
Lenovo describes options across price points and personalized configurations; that breadth illustrates why a family name is not a specification. Two laptops carrying the same series label can differ in processor, memory, storage, display, graphics, wireless hardware and warranty. Compare the configuration code or full specification sheet for each candidate.
Rank #2
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Use a simple budget rule: reserve enough for the components that cannot be upgraded later. A slightly less decorative chassis with adequate memory and storage is usually more useful than a premium exterior paired with an undersized configuration. If your budget is fixed, rank requirements and compromise on appearance, screen resolution or optional accessories before compromising application compatibility or the performance needed for your main task.
Account for ownership costs
- Check whether memory and storage are replaceable or permanently attached; future upgrades can change the value of a configuration.
- Price the charger, proprietary adapter, dock and replacement parts if they are not included.
- Confirm the return window and who pays shipping for a warranty repair.
- Compare the coverage period, accidental-damage exclusions and international or cross-border service terms.
- For a business purchase, include downtime and the cost of an on-site or faster support option if your organization needs it.
4. Match processor, memory, storage and graphics to the work
Processor
The processor affects application responsiveness, compilation, exports and multitasking. Look at the exact processor model and generation, not simply a label such as “Core,” “Ryzen” or “high performance.” For documents and browsing, a modern entry or midrange processor may be sufficient. Programming, content creation, data work and sustained multitasking justify a stronger processor. Gaming and 3D applications require balancing processor performance with graphics capability and cooling.
Memory
Memory determines how many applications and large files can remain active without relying heavily on slower storage. Light browsing and documents can work with an entry configuration, while frequent multitasking, development environments, creative applications and virtual machines benefit from more memory. Treat the installed amount and upgradeability as separate facts: a laptop with sufficient memory today may still be a poor long-term choice if it cannot be expanded for your expected workload.
Storage
Solid-state storage makes startup and application loading feel faster than older mechanical drives. Capacity determines how many applications, games, photos and videos you can keep locally. Estimate the size of your working files and leave room for the operating system and updates. If you use cloud storage, confirm that your workflow remains usable when offline and that synchronization will not consume the entire drive.

Graphics
Integrated graphics are adequate for many office, web and media tasks. A dedicated GPU matters for modern games, 3D work, GPU-accelerated editing and some scientific or machine-learning workloads. Compare the exact GPU, its power configuration and the laptop’s cooling design; a brand or “gaming” label alone does not establish performance.
5. Evaluate the display and form factor together
ASUS notes the basic trade-off: smaller screens are easier to carry, while larger screens provide more workspace. RTINGS also treats portability and form factor as core buying-guide categories. Decide where you will use the laptop before selecting a screen size.
Screen size and layout
- Compact screens: easier to carry and convenient in cramped spaces, but may require more scrolling or an external monitor for complex layouts.
- Mid-size screens: a balance for mixed home, office and travel use.
- Large screens: better for timelines, spreadsheets, code and creative interfaces, with added weight and footprint.
Check resolution, brightness, viewing angles, scaling behavior and the finish of the panel. Color-sensitive work requires a display specification and calibration behavior appropriate to that work; a high resolution alone does not guarantee accurate color. A high-refresh display can improve motion clarity in games, but it may consume more power and add cost without helping office tasks.

Clamshell, 2-in-1 or tablet-style design
A conventional clamshell is often the simplest and lightest option for typing. A 2-in-1 can be useful for handwritten notes, presentations or confined spaces, but its hinge, touch layer and pen support should be checked in the exact configuration. Verify whether a pen is included, which modes are supported and how much the convertible design adds to weight and price.

6. Check weight, battery expectations and charging
Battery life varies substantially by model, as HP emphasizes; published figures are not a guarantee of your real runtime. Screen brightness, wireless activity, processor load, graphics use, applications and battery age all change results.
Estimate your real travel pattern
- Write down the longest period you normally work away from a power outlet.
- Identify whether that period involves light documents or sustained video, gaming, compiling or editing.
- Check independent battery testing when available, but treat it as a comparison under particular conditions rather than a promise.
- Confirm charger size, charging connector and whether USB-C charging works at the required wattage.
- Consider a removable or replaceable battery only if the model actually offers one and local parts are available.
Do not select a heavier performance laptop solely from a quoted battery number. Sustained high-power workloads can reduce runtime sharply, and the power adapter itself adds to the travel load.
7. Verify ports, wireless features and accessory compatibility
List every device you intend to connect and map it to the laptop’s physical ports. Count the connectors rather than assuming a premium chassis includes everything you need.
- External displays may require HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C video output or a dock; verify supported resolutions and refresh rates.
- Fast external storage and media cards may require particular USB speeds or a card reader.
- Wired networking can require an adapter, especially on thin models.
- Headsets, microphones, printers and specialist equipment may depend on a combined audio jack, USB type or legacy connector.
- Check Wi-Fi and Bluetooth versions when range, throughput or a particular accessory matters.
ASUS advises reviewing connectivity before purchase. Include the cost, size and reliability of any adapter or dock in your budget, and confirm that it works with the operating system you selected.
8. Treat warranty, support and reliability as items to verify
Consumer Reports identifies technical support, reliability and owner satisfaction as relevant laptop-buying criteria. Those qualities should be checked for the particular model and purchase location rather than inferred from a brand stereotype. Support experience and warranty coverage can vary by country, seller, model and service plan.
Questions to answer before payment
- How long is the standard warranty, and what parts and labor does it cover?
- Is service handled by mail, a local center, an authorized partner or on-site technicians?
- What is excluded, including accidental damage, batteries, chargers and cosmetic wear?
- Can the warranty be used in the countries where you travel?
- How are repairs initiated, and is telephone, chat or online support available in your language and time zone?
- Does opening the chassis or upgrading a component affect coverage in your jurisdiction?
Save the seller’s return policy, the manufacturer’s warranty page and the exact configuration details. A low purchase price is less attractive if a repair requires long-distance shipping or if the seller will not accept a return for an incompatible configuration.

9. Understand what brand lineups do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturer positioning can help you find a starting point, but it is not independent proof of superiority. Dell’s U.S. guide positions XPS for premium experiences and creative work, Alienware for gaming and graphics-intensive work, and Dell-branded models for everyday productivity and value. Those descriptions indicate intended audiences; they do not establish that one line outperforms every competitor.
Lenovo’s guide spans budget Chromebooks, IdeaPad systems and Legion gaming models, with configuration choices at different price points. This is a reminder to compare models within one brand as well as across brands. ASUS and HP likewise organize their guidance around routine, processor, memory, storage, display and form factor rather than claiming that a logo alone determines the right choice.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a brand name to locate a support network, product family or design approach, then return to the exact specification, price and service terms. Do not treat a familiar logo as evidence of a universal reliability ranking or the best value.
10. Compare two or more candidates with a weighted scorecard
When you have real candidates, record their specifications side by side. Give each category a weight based on your work, then eliminate any model that fails a must-have requirement before adding scores.
| Category | What to record | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system and software | OS edition, required applications, drivers and peripherals | Will every must-have program and accessory work without a workaround? |
| Performance | Exact processor, graphics solution and cooling approach | Can it sustain your heaviest normal task? |
| Memory and storage | Installed capacity, type, free expansion and drive speed | Will it hold your working files and remain adequate as projects grow? |
| Display and form factor | Size, resolution, brightness, panel characteristics, touch and hinge modes | Is it comfortable for your layout, lighting and travel pattern? |
| Portability and battery | Weight of laptop and charger, battery test conditions and charging method | Can you carry and power it through your longest day? |
| Connectivity | Ports, wireless standards, webcam, microphone and dock support | Will your existing equipment connect without costly adapters? |
| Warranty and support | Coverage period, service method, exclusions and local availability | Who will repair it, where and at what cost if something fails? |
| Total price | Exact configuration plus accessories, tax, delivery and service plans | Does the complete setup stay within your ceiling? |
Weight the categories honestly. A traveler may assign more importance to weight, battery and service response; a gamer may prioritize graphics, cooling and display behavior; a student may value keyboard comfort, webcam quality and repairability. The winning laptop is the one with the strongest fit for your priorities, not the highest unweighted specification.
11. A practical buying procedure
- List must-have software and devices. Record operating-system requirements, drivers, file formats and accessories.
- Describe your heaviest routine. Use the most demanding task you perform regularly, not an occasional wish.
- Set a total spending ceiling. Include memory or storage upgrades, adapters, a dock, protection and warranty options.
- Choose a screen and portability range. Decide how much workspace and carrying comfort you need before browsing models.
- Shortlist several exact configurations. Capture processor, graphics, memory, storage, display, weight, ports, battery information and price.
- Check compatibility. Confirm applications, peripherals, external monitors, docks and operating-system support.
- Verify service terms. Read the warranty, return policy and local repair process for the seller and country where you will buy.
- Score and recheck. Remove any candidate that misses a must-have, then compare the remaining models using the same categories and total cost.
- Save evidence of the purchase. Keep the configuration page, invoice, serial number, warranty terms and return deadline.
12. Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing a logo instead of a specification
A brand can sell both entry-level and premium systems. Compare the exact processor, memory, storage, display and service terms.
Using a headline price
Base configurations may omit the memory, storage, operating-system edition or accessories your work requires. Price the complete configuration.

Ignoring software compatibility
A laptop that cannot run a required application is not a bargain. Check the developer’s supported systems and peripheral drivers before ordering.
Buying more graphics than you need
Dedicated graphics can add cost, heat, weight and power consumption. Select them when your games or creative tools actually benefit.
Underestimating memory and storage
Small capacities can force constant file management and slow multitasking. Check upgrade options and leave practical headroom.
Trusting advertised battery life literally
Compare the test conditions and consider your own brightness, wireless use and workload. Carrying a large charger changes the portability calculation.
Skipping warranty details
Service coverage is location- and model-dependent. Confirm who provides support, what is excluded and how a repair is started before paying.
13. The final decision rule
Pick the least expensive configuration that satisfies every must-have software, performance, display, portability and support requirement with reasonable room for growth. If two models meet those requirements, choose between them using the factors you will notice every day: keyboard and screen comfort, weight, ports, battery behavior, repair process and the total cost of the exact configuration.
Recheck inventory, prices, warranty coverage and service availability immediately before purchase because those details change by country, seller, model and date. A careful configuration comparison will produce a better result than any universal “best brand” list.
