Choose a Huawei phone only after checking your own essential apps on the exact handset and regional software version. New Huawei devices generally do not include Google Mobile Services (GMS), and Huawei’s UK AppGallery FAQ says, “Currently it’s not possible to download Google apps on new Huawei devices.” AppGallery, Huawei Mobile Services (HMS), browser versions and app-transfer tools can cover some needs, but an app appearing in a store or transferring successfully does not prove that every feature will work.
The safest buying method is therefore a compatibility audit: list the apps you cannot live without, identify which depend on Google services, verify their login, notifications, maps, payments and updates on the specific model, then confirm the regional software, warranty and support before paying.

The decision in one sentence
A Huawei phone is a sensible choice when your essential apps either run through AppGallery and HMS, work reliably from an official website, or have an acceptable browser alternative. It is a poor choice when your daily work, banking, authentication, payments, navigation or entertainment depends on GMS-only functions that you cannot replace.

This is not a question of whether the phone uses Android technology. Huawei devices use an Android Open Source Project (AOSP)-based environment, but new models generally do not ship with Google Mobile Services. GMS includes Google components that many third-party apps use for sign-in, maps, push notifications, payments, location, licensing and other background functions.

What “no Google apps” actually changes
Google Play and GMS are separate from Android itself
Android compatibility alone does not guarantee compatibility with Google-dependent software. Huawei’s HMS Core support information explains that HMS Core supports Android apps on AOSP-based devices, while warning: “However, certain Android apps require support from GMS Core and may not be able to run on HMS Core.” In practical terms, an app can install, open or copy across and still fail at sign-in, notifications, location, payments or another important function.
Huawei supplies a different service layer
Huawei’s ecosystem centers on AppGallery and HMS Core. Huawei describes HMS as providing services such as AppGallery, Cloud, Wallet and Health, plus developer capabilities for identity, payments, notifications, location and maps. Those services can replace some Google functions, but developers must support them. An Android app that was built around GMS does not automatically gain equivalent behavior simply because it runs on an AOSP-based phone.
The limitation is current guidance, not a promise about every future model
Huawei’s UK AppGallery FAQ uses the present-tense statement that Google apps cannot currently be downloaded on new Huawei devices. The exact experience can vary by handset, market, software build and app version, so treat this as a purchasing constraint for the model you are considering rather than as a guarantee about every historical or future device.

Do not begin by asking whether a Huawei phone is “Android compatible.” Begin with the services that would make the phone unusable if they failed. Include apps you use weekly, not only the ones on your home screen.

Mark every app as essential, useful or replaceable. For each essential app, record whether it needs Google sign-in, Google Maps, Google Play Services, push notifications, in-app payments or device-integrity checks. App-store search results do not answer those questions.

Check the exact handset and regional software
Compatibility is not determined by the Huawei name alone. Before purchase, write down the complete model number, country or region variant, operating-system build and seller. Two phones with similar marketing names can have different firmware, preinstalled services, update schedules or warranty terms.
- Model: obtain the precise model identifier, not only the series name.
- Region: confirm where the phone was intended to be sold and which language, payment and carrier features are enabled.
- Software: ask which operating-system and HMS/AppGallery versions are installed and how updates are delivered.
- Network: verify local band support, eSIM or physical-SIM requirements and carrier certification.
- Support: confirm the local warranty, repair route and expected security-update policy.
- Return rights: buy from a seller that lets you return the device if an essential app fails, subject to local law.
The available evidence does not establish current hardware specifications, prices, stock or update commitments for an unspecified country. Obtain those details from Huawei or an authorized local seller for the exact variant rather than assuming that an imported listing is equivalent.
Understand the available app routes
AppGallery
Huawei describes AppGallery as its official app-distribution platform for Huawei smartphones and tablets and says it is preinstalled. Search for each essential app there, but do not stop at finding a listing. Check the developer name, supported version, sign-in method, update date and the permissions it requests. If the listing points to another source, treat that as a separate installation path and test it independently.
Phone Clone
Huawei’s German AppGallery FAQ describes Phone Clone as a way to transfer apps and personal content to a new Huawei phone. It is useful for moving contacts, photos and compatible app packages, but a successful transfer is not a compatibility certification. A copied app may still fail when it calls GMS, requests a Google token or expects Google’s notification infrastructure.
Official app websites
Huawei also describes downloading selected apps from their official websites with Huawei Browser. Use the developer’s own site, verify that the download is intended for your device and keep a record of how updates will arrive. A website download can provide an app package, but it cannot add missing Google services to an app that requires them.

Browser versions
Huawei Mobile Services guidance discussed by O2 notes that Google-operated websites can be opened in Huawei Browser and suggests web versions for services such as Gmail or YouTube. A browser can be an effective substitute for reading mail, watching video or completing a simple web transaction. It may not provide offline downloads, background playback, push alerts, hardware integration, casting or the same account-recovery flow as a native app. Test the specific tasks you perform rather than treating “the website opens” as full equivalence.

Use this sequence with a demo device, a trusted friend’s identical model or a seller that accepts returns. If you cannot perform the tests, treat the result as unverified rather than assuming success.
- Freeze the configuration. Record the exact model, region, software build and AppGallery/HMS versions. Do not compare a store demo from another market with the phone you intend to order.
- List the essential workflows. For every critical app, write the actions you must complete: sign in, approve a payment, receive an alert, find a route, pair an accessory, download a file or recover an account.
- Install through the intended route. Try AppGallery first, then the app developer’s official website or a browser version if that is the provider’s documented option. Do not count an unverified mirror as proof.
- Complete account setup. Test password login, two-factor authentication, passkeys, biometric prompts and any organization policy. An app that launches to a welcome screen has not passed.
- Test background behavior. Lock the phone, enable normal battery management and send a message or approval from another device. Confirm that the alert arrives without manually opening the app.
- Test location and payments. Run a real or sandbox route, check location accuracy and complete a permitted test transaction. Verify whether contactless or in-app payment is supported in your country.
- Test updates and recovery. Update the app, sign out and back in, restart the phone and restore the account. A workaround that works only once is not a dependable replacement.
- Record the result by workflow. Mark each essential task as pass, partial or fail, and keep screenshots or written confirmation from the provider.
Use a strict decision rule
- Pass: every essential workflow works on the exact configuration, with a documented update and recovery path.
- Partial: the main function works, but notifications, payments, maps, offline use or another important feature does not. Buy only if you can live with that limitation.
- Fail: sign-in, authentication, banking, work access or another non-negotiable task cannot be completed. Choose a different phone.
Compare Huawei with another phone on the right axes
A fair comparison is not “Huawei versus Android.” Compare the complete ownership experience, especially the services that sit underneath apps.

The available information does not verify model-specific hardware or current prices, so do not use a generic “Huawei smartphone” listing as a substitute for a precise comparison.
Plan everyday workarounds realistically
Email and video services
Open the provider’s web version in Huawei Browser and test sign-in, attachments, notifications and account recovery. If you need instant alerts, multiple accounts, offline access or device-level integration, a browser may be inadequate even when the page itself works.

Maps and travel
Check whether your preferred mapping or travel service supports HMS, offers a complete web interface or provides offline data through an official route. Test location permission, turn-by-turn guidance, route recalculation and battery behavior. A static map page is not equivalent to live navigation.
Payments and banking
Ask the bank or payment provider which operating systems, wallets and authentication methods it supports in your country. Test enrollment and an actual permitted payment flow. Never assume that a phone’s Wallet application can substitute for every bank or transit wallet.
Work and authentication
Have your employer’s IT team confirm support for device management, single sign-on, push approvals and security policies. Keep a second approved authentication method available before moving your work account to a new phone.

HMS can be an advantage when the apps you use are built for it. Huawei identifies identity, payments, notifications, location and maps among its developer capabilities, and lists AppGallery, Cloud, Wallet and Health as consumer services. This means the phone is not without an app ecosystem; it is an ecosystem with different service dependencies.
Huawei’s UK FAQ claims 400 million monthly active users and calls AppGallery the world’s third-largest app marketplace. The page does not provide a publication year or independent methodology, so treat both figures as Huawei’s own claims rather than independently verified market statistics.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is Android, so every Android app will work”
Android app compatibility and GMS compatibility are different. Check the app’s required services and test its critical workflows.
“The app transferred, so it is supported”
Phone Clone can move apps and content, but it does not recreate unavailable Google components. Open the app, sign in, test notifications and complete the task you actually need.
“A website is the same as the app”
Browser access can be a good fallback for simple services. It may lack push notifications, offline files, background activity, hardware access or payment integration.

“A workaround found online will remain reliable”
Unofficial installation methods can change after an operating-system or app update and may create security, privacy or account-recovery problems. Prefer AppGallery, the developer’s official site or a documented web service, and reassess after major updates.
“An imported model is identical to a local model”
Confirm firmware region, languages, carrier support, warranty, update delivery and return rights. A lower price is not a saving if an essential service is unavailable or the phone cannot be supported locally.
Buyer’s checklist
- Write down every essential app and the exact task it must perform.
- Identify possible GMS dependencies: sign-in, maps, notifications, payments, location, licensing and integrity checks.
- Obtain the precise model number and regional software version.
- Search AppGallery and the developer’s official website; test the browser version where offered.
- Do not treat Phone Clone, an app listing or a successful launch as proof of full support.
- Test authentication, background notifications, location, payments, updates and account recovery.
- Confirm local network compatibility, warranty, support and return terms.
- Keep a fallback authentication method and backup of contacts and personal data.
- Buy only when every non-negotiable workflow passes on the configuration you will own.
Bottom line
Choose Huawei for a Google-free setup only when your app inventory has been verified on the exact regional handset and you are comfortable with HMS, AppGallery and browser-based alternatives. If one essential banking, work, authentication, payment or navigation workflow depends on GMS and has no tested replacement, the prudent choice is a phone whose software officially supports that dependency.
