How to Choose a Heart Rate Monitor for Your Workouts

For the strongest evidence of accurate workout readings, choose an electrode-based chest strap; for comfort and convenience, an optical wrist, forearm, or upper-arm monitor may suit everyday tracking. No monitor type is accurate in every activity, and published comparisons do not establish a current best-buy model. The right choice depends on your exercise, how much measurement accuracy matters, and what you can wear comfortably.

How accurate are wrist heart-rate monitors during walking and running?

Optical monitors can be useful for tracking heart-rate patterns, but accuracy depends on the device, activity, and placement. A 2017 study of 50 healthy adults compared a Polar H7 chest strap, a forearm optical monitor, and wrist monitors with ECG during treadmill, stationary-bike, and elliptical exercise. The H7 had the strongest overall agreement with ECG among the devices tested, with a concordance coefficient of 0.996. Optical readings varied by exercise, and all tested monitors performed poorly during elliptical exercise with arm levers. These results describe those devices and that protocol, not every current watch or every wearer. Read the 2017 study.

The study did not establish a universal accuracy figure for all walking or running. Treat a wrist reading as a useful estimate rather than a guaranteed ECG-equivalent measurement, particularly when movement is vigorous or the reading seems inconsistent with how you feel.

Why chest straps and optical monitors differ

Chest straps use electrodes

An electrode-based chest strap detects electrical signals from the heart. In the cited comparisons, chest straps agreed more closely with ECG than the tested optical wearables. The 2017 study authors concluded: “Electrode-containing chest monitors should be used when accurate HR measurement is imperative.” That is a conclusion about the evidence and devices they evaluated, not a promise that any chest strap will be exact in every circumstance.

#1 Best Overall
Polar H10 Heart Rate Monitor Chest Strap - ANT + Bluetooth, Waterproof HR Sensor for Men and Women, Black, M-XXL
  • WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Polar HRM works with ALL HRM compatible Equipment.
  • SUPREME ACCURACY: Widely recognized for its top precision by many sources, Polar H10 is the most accurate heart rate sensor in Polar's history. Polar H10 provides top quality measurement.
  • CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth, ANT plus and 5 kHz provide an excellent variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth and ANT plus connections simultaneously as well as two Bluetooth connections simultaneously.
  • POLAR PRO CHEST STRAP: With improved electrodes, an easy-to-use buckle and silicone dots, the strap is comfortable and interference-free.
  • VERSATILITY: Polar H10 is fully waterproof and it has internal memory for multiple hours.

A 2019 study involving 80 adults in cardiac rehabilitation also found that the tested Polar H7 chest strap had the strongest agreement with ECG across the study’s exercise conditions, with a concordance coefficient of 0.99. The tested wrist-worn monitors agreed less closely. Because this study used a cardiac-rehabilitation cohort and particular models, it should not be read as a ranking of current consumer products. Read the cardiac-rehabilitation study.

Optical monitors depend on light and fit

Optical wearables estimate heart rate using sensors against the skin. Their readings can be affected by movement and placement, so results from one body location or activity may not carry over to another. A 2025 study of 28 healthy adults found that accuracy was strongest at rest and declined as movement increased; short, high-intensity burpees were particularly challenging. In graded treadmill exercise, the tested forearm Polar Verity Sense and upper-arm Whoop 4.0 showed the strongest agreement with the chest-strap reference. Those findings apply to the tested devices, participants, and protocol—not to every product in those categories. Read the 2025 placement study.

Which type makes sense for your activity?

Use case What the evidence suggests Practical choice
Accuracy is especially important The tested chest straps agreed more closely with ECG than the tested optical wearables in the cited exercise studies. Consider an electrode-based chest strap and make sure it fits securely.
Steady walking or running and everyday trend tracking Optical monitors may be convenient, but the cited evidence does not establish one accuracy level for every wrist device or workout. A wrist monitor may be a reasonable convenience choice if approximate trends are sufficient.
Activities with abrupt or extensive movement In the 2025 study, accuracy declined as movement increased, and burpees were the most challenging tested activity. Expect optical readings to be less dependable during intense, changing movements; consider whether a chest strap is acceptable for the workout.
Trying a different optical placement In the 2025 graded-treadmill condition, the tested forearm and upper-arm devices had the strongest agreement with the chest-strap reference. Placement may help, but the finding does not prove that all forearm or upper-arm monitors outperform wrist devices.

How to choose a monitor you will actually wear

  • Match it to the workout. Consider whether you mainly do steady treadmill sessions or activities with abrupt, full-body movement.
  • Set your accuracy requirement. A device for general trend tracking has a different job from one used when reliable readings are imperative.
  • Choose a tolerable placement. Compare wrist, forearm, upper arm, and chest placement based on how each feels during your normal session.
  • Check fit and skin contact. A loose or poorly positioned sensor can undermine readings; a chest strap also needs comfortable, consistent contact.
  • Keep claims model-specific. A result for one device should not be transferred to a newer model or another product from the same brand without evidence.

Comfort is part of measurement quality

A systematic review of 32 studies of chest-worn sensors reported good validity in the settings reviewed, but also identified motion artifacts, poor strap placement, sweating, discomfort during prolonged wear, restricted mobility, and limited generalizability from controlled studies. A theoretically suitable monitor is of little practical use if its fit makes you adjust it repeatedly or stop wearing it. Read the 2025 systematic review.

What the available studies cannot tell you

These studies validate particular devices under particular conditions; they are not a comprehensive test of today’s retail choices. The older comparisons’ Polar H7 results do not establish that a current model is best. The 2025 placement study included 28 healthy adults and a defined activity protocol, so it cannot settle performance for all users, workouts, or placements. The evidence supports comparing sensor type, activity, fit, and intended accuracy—not naming a universal winner.
