How to Choose a Hardware KVM Switch for Two Computers

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a two-computer hardware KVM switch by starting with the number of displays, then matching every computer output, KVM input, KVM console output and monitor input. Finally, verify the complete signal path—including docks, adapters and cables—supports your required resolution and refresh rate. A switch can be advertised as 4K yet fail to deliver the refresh rate, multi-monitor layout or USB behavior you need.

For two computers and one monitor, you generally need a two-port, single-display KVM. For two computers and two monitors, you need an explicitly dual-monitor KVM and two usable display paths from each computer. Laptop owners must also confirm that the specific USB-C port carries video; the connector shape alone proves nothing.

What a hardware KVM switch does

KVM means keyboard, video and mouse. A hardware KVM connects two computers to one shared set of monitor(s), keyboard and mouse, then switches those connections between the computers. Depending on the model, it may also share a webcam, storage device, headset, speakers or other USB equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The switch is separate from a monitor with an integrated KVM. Some monitors accept video from two computers and use their USB hub to switch peripherals internally. That can be convenient, but the ports, switching behavior and supported display layouts are model-specific. A standalone KVM is usually the more flexible choice when you want to keep your existing monitor(s), use more than one display, or switch a larger collection of USB devices.

1. Count computers and displays before looking at features

“Two-port” normally describes two computers, not two monitors. Count both independently and write down the topology you actually need.

  • Two computers, one monitor: choose a two-computer, single-display KVM.
  • Two computers, two monitors: choose a two-computer, dual-monitor KVM. Each computer must provide two display paths that the switch can accept.
  • Two computers, more than two monitors: ordinary two-computer KVMs may not support this arrangement; look for a model whose specifications explicitly list the required display count.

A one-monitor switch cannot become a two-monitor switch by adding a splitter. A splitter duplicates one video signal; it does not create an independent second desktop, and it does not add a second input path for the other computer. Likewise, a “2-port” label is not enough evidence that a product supports two displays. Read the model’s host-input and console-output specifications.

Build a simple connection map

For each computer, record every available video output and USB port. For each monitor, record every input. Then list the KVM’s host connectors (the computer side) and console connectors (the monitor and peripheral side). The required path must exist twice for video—once from each computer—and once from the KVM to each monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item to record Examples Why it matters
Computer video outputs DisplayPort, HDMI, USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode These must match the KVM host inputs, directly or through a suitable adapter.
KVM host inputs Two DisplayPort inputs per computer, or a specified USB-C/HDMI combination The switch may require a particular connector on each computer.
KVM console outputs One or two DisplayPort or HDMI outputs These connect to the monitor inputs and determine the display topology.
Monitor inputs DisplayPort, HDMI or USB-C video input The KVM output and monitor input must use compatible signaling and modes.

2. Match connectors and video capabilities, not just plug shapes

DisplayPort, HDMI and USB-C are connector families, not guarantees of identical capability. A USB-C socket may carry charging and data only, or it may also carry DisplayPort Alternate Mode video. Confirm the capability of the particular port in the computer’s manual or specifications. On a laptop, a lightning symbol or a DisplayPort symbol can be a clue, but the manufacturer’s documentation is the authority.

ASUS’s monitor KVM guidance illustrates common combinations: one computer may connect by DisplayPort, another by HDMI, while a USB-C video connection carries both display and USB data for a laptop. A KVM must explicitly support the combination you intend to use. A model designed for two DisplayPort hosts is not automatically compatible with an HDMI-only computer.

Adapters and docks

Use an adapter only after checking three things:

  1. Direction: an adapter must convert from the computer’s output type to the KVM’s input type. A passive cable or adapter may not work in the reverse direction.
  2. Host support: the computer must be able to generate the signal the adapter expects. USB-C-to-DisplayPort requires video-capable USB-C; a data-only USB-C port cannot be upgraded by a cable.
  3. Mode support: the adapter, KVM, cable and monitor must all support the target resolution, refresh rate, color format and copy-protection requirements.

A USB-C or Thunderbolt dock can provide additional display outputs for a laptop, but it does not remove the laptop’s own display-output limits. Check how many independent displays the laptop and dock support together, then compare that number with the KVM’s required host connections. Conversion through a KVM can also reduce the achievable refresh rate compared with the computer’s native GPU capability, as Belkin notes in its guidance on high-resolution display paths.

3. Set the display requirement before comparing models

Write down the exact mode you expect each monitor to run. Include resolution and refresh rate, and note whether HDR, a particular color depth or a multi-monitor arrangement is essential. Then check the KVM specification for that exact connector combination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a “4K” badge as a complete answer. One model may support 4K at 60 Hz on a single DisplayPort display, while another may support 4K only at a lower refresh rate, or only when one input is used. A dock, adapter or cable can impose a lower limit even when the KVM itself lists a higher mode.

Requirement Question to answer in the specification
Resolution Does the KVM support the required pixels per display at the intended input and output connectors?
Refresh rate Is the stated rate available at that resolution, for every display in the planned configuration?
Number of displays Is the mode supported independently on both monitors, rather than duplicated from one output?
HDR and color Does the complete path pass the HDR format and color depth your monitor uses?
HDCP Does the switch list the required HDCP version for protected video?

For a concrete specification example, StarTech describes the P2AD122 as a two-computer DisplayPort KVM for one 4K 60 Hz display, with EDID emulation and an HDCP engine. Its P2DD46A2 is described as a two-computer, dual-monitor DisplayPort KVM supporting 4K at 60 Hz. Those figures are manufacturer specifications for the named models, not a promise that every KVM with a similar label will perform the same way.

4. Decide which USB devices must switch

Make a complete list of the equipment you want to share:

  • Keyboard and mouse
  • Webcam
  • Headset, speakers or USB microphone
  • External storage
  • Printer, card reader or other occasional devices

Check the KVM’s USB port count, connector type and stated data rate. Some switches provide only the low-bandwidth ports needed for a keyboard and mouse; others include a USB hub intended for faster storage or cameras. A port that supplies power is not necessarily a high-speed data port, and a USB 3.x hub can have different compatibility requirements from a USB 2.0 keyboard-and-mouse connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm whether video and USB switch together. Many users expect the keyboard, mouse and monitor to move to the same computer at once, but some products allow separate or differently timed switching. Also check whether a connected storage device remains mounted when you change computers; repeatedly disconnecting a drive without ejecting it can risk data loss.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose a switching control that fits your desk

  • Front-panel button: simple and visible, but you must reach the switch.
  • Hotkey: useful when the KVM is hidden, provided the keyboard combination does not conflict with your operating system or applications.
  • Wired remote: lets you place the control near your keyboard, subject to the model’s cable length and connector.
  • Automatic switching: convenient for some workflows, but it may change sources unexpectedly when a computer sleeps or wakes.

StarTech lists push-button and hotkey switching on its cited dual-monitor model. Treat that as a model-specific feature and verify the exact control method before buying.

5. Check EDID behavior if monitor continuity matters

EDID is the display-identification information a monitor sends to a computer. It tells the operating system which resolutions, refresh rates and other display modes are available. When a KVM changes sources, the computer may briefly lose that information. The result can be a slow re-detection, windows moving to another display, a changed resolution or a monitor that wakes unreliably.

If you need stable display detection while switching, look for explicit wording such as “EDID emulation” or “EDID management” in the exact model’s manual. StarTech lists EDID emulation on the P2AD122 and P2DD46A2 specifications, and ACT lists EDID emulation for the AC7922. These claims identify features of those products; they do not establish identical behavior for every KVM or guarantee compatibility with every monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When comparing EDID implementations, look for details about whether the switch stores a monitor profile, presents a constant profile to both computers, or offers a selectable learning procedure. If the documentation is silent, assume that switching may trigger display renegotiation and plan for a short blackout.

6. Laptop-specific checks

Laptops create two common failure points: video-capable USB-C is not universal, and a laptop may not support as many independent displays as the dock or KVM advertises.

  1. Identify the exact USB-C port you plan to use and confirm DisplayPort Alternate Mode or another documented video mode.
  2. Check the laptop’s maximum number of external displays and the maximum resolution and refresh rate for each.
  3. Check the dock’s supported display outputs and whether it uses DisplayPort, HDMI, DisplayLink or another technology.
  4. Match the dock outputs to the KVM host inputs, including any required adapters.
  5. Confirm that the dock, KVM and monitors can operate simultaneously at your target modes.

ACT’s AC7922 is an example of a model-specific USB-C/HDMI design: its stated specification includes USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode 1.4, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.3 and EDID emulation for one display. That does not mean every USB-C/HDMI KVM accepts the same signals, nor that every laptop can provide them.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

7. Consider an integrated monitor KVM

An integrated monitor KVM can reduce cable count because the monitor contains the video selection and USB switching hardware. Dell’s KVM setup guidance and ASUS’s monitor KVM documentation show that this approach is available on some models. The monitor may switch automatically when it detects an active source, or it may require an on-screen-display command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose this route only after checking the monitor’s official support documentation for:

  • Number and type of supported computer connections
  • Whether USB-C carries video, USB data and charging together
  • How many monitors can participate in the KVM arrangement
  • Whether keyboard and mouse switching follows video switching
  • Supported resolution and refresh rate on each input

An integrated KVM is not automatically equivalent to a standalone dual-monitor KVM. If you need two independent monitors, several USB devices or a particular switching control, compare the monitor’s actual port layout with a dedicated switch.

8. Compare candidates using the same checklist

Once you know your topology, compare only models that satisfy the basic display requirement. Then use the following axes:

Comparison axis What to verify
Computer and display count Two computers and the exact number of independent displays you need.
Connector families Host inputs, console outputs and any supported USB-C video mode.
Display modes Maximum resolution and refresh rate for your specific input/output combination.
USB sharing Number of switched ports, USB data rate, power behavior and device compatibility.
Switching method Button, hotkey, remote or automatic control, and whether video and USB switch together.
EDID behavior Emulation or management details if stable monitor detection is important.
Included equipment Host cables, console cables, power supply, remote and any required adapters.

Do not compare a manufacturer’s maximum headline mode with another model’s typical-use mode. Record the condition attached to each number—for example, “4K at 60 Hz with one DisplayPort display”—so you do not accidentally apply it to a dual-monitor or converted setup.

9. Example configurations

Two desktops, one DisplayPort monitor

Use a two-computer, single-display DisplayPort KVM. Each desktop needs a DisplayPort output, and the KVM must provide a DisplayPort console output to the monitor. The StarTech P2AD122 is a specification example in this category, with the manufacturer listing one 4K 60 Hz display, EDID emulation and an HDCP engine. Confirm the graphics cards, cables and monitor support the same mode.

Two desktops, two DisplayPort monitors

Use an explicitly dual-monitor DisplayPort KVM. Each desktop needs two usable DisplayPort outputs, and the switch must have two host paths per computer plus two console outputs. The StarTech P2DD46A2 is described by its manufacturer as a two-computer dual-monitor model supporting 4K at 60 Hz, with push-button and hotkey switching and USB hub ports. Verify that both monitors can run at the required mode at the same time.

Laptop plus desktop, one display

A USB-C/HDMI KVM may fit when the laptop’s USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode and the desktop supplies the required HDMI signal. The ACT AC7922 is a specification example that lists USB-C DisplayPort Alternate Mode 1.4, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.3 and EDID emulation. Check whether the laptop needs a charging connection, whether the KVM passes USB data to the laptop, and whether an additional power supply is required.

10. Installation and verification procedure

  1. Power off both computers and the monitors.
  2. Connect each computer to the KVM host ports using the specified video and USB cables.
  3. Connect the KVM console outputs to the monitor(s), then connect the shared keyboard, mouse and other USB devices.
  4. Attach the KVM’s power supply if the model requires one; bus power may be insufficient for multiple peripherals.
  5. Turn on the monitors, KVM and computers in the order recommended by the manual.
  6. Switch to the first computer and set the required resolution and refresh rate in the operating system.
  7. Switch to the second computer and repeat the check.
  8. Test every shared USB device, then switch repeatedly while a document and a video window are open.
  9. Test sleep, wake and reboot behavior on both computers before relying on the setup for work.

11. Troubleshooting common failures

No picture from one computer

  • Confirm the cable is connected to the KVM host input assigned to that computer.
  • Check that the computer output is enabled and set to a mode the KVM supports.
  • Remove the adapter temporarily and test a direct, supported connection.
  • Check USB-C video capability; a data-only port cannot drive the display.

Picture appears but refresh rate is lower

Check the mode limit of every component, not just the graphics card. An adapter, dock, KVM conversion stage or cable may support the resolution but not the desired refresh rate. Select a mode explicitly listed for the complete path.

Windows move or resolution changes after switching

This is often an EDID renegotiation issue. Confirm that the exact KVM offers EDID emulation or management, follow its profile-learning instructions if provided, and check monitor firmware and cable quality. A switch without a documented EDID feature may legitimately cause the operating system to re-detect the display.

Keyboard or mouse does not follow the video

Verify that the peripherals are plugged into switched USB ports rather than charging-only or pass-through ports. Check whether the model switches USB and video together, and try a basic wired keyboard or mouse to isolate compatibility problems from a complex hub or wireless receiver.

Webcam or storage disconnects

Check the KVM’s USB data rate and power budget. High-bandwidth devices may require a USB 3.x hub, a powered connection or a shorter cable. Eject storage before switching computers, and avoid moving an active webcam or audio interface between applications while a call is in progress.

Final purchase checklist

  • Two computers are supported, and the model explicitly supports your number of displays.
  • Each computer has the required number and type of video outputs.
  • Every USB-C video port is documented as video-capable.
  • KVM host inputs, console outputs and monitor inputs match, directly or through verified adapters.
  • The exact resolution and refresh rate are listed for your complete configuration.
  • HDR, color and HDCP requirements are covered when relevant.
  • All required USB peripherals fit the switched ports and data-rate limits.
  • The switching method suits your workflow.
  • EDID behavior is documented if uninterrupted display detection matters.
  • Required cables, power supplies, docks and adapters are included or budgeted.
  • You have checked the current manual and regional specification for the exact model.
