Windows lets you install supported games from the Xbox app, PC Game Pass and other storefronts on one device. A SteamOS handheld can be an excellent alternative if most of your library is Steam-compatible and you prefer a console-like interface, but it is not a universal substitute for Windows.
First define what “Xbox games” means for you: a supported Windows installation, cloud streaming, or Remote Play from your own console. Those routes have different game support, subscriptions, network requirements and hardware priorities. Then compare the processor tier, memory, storage, screen, controls, battery capacity, weight, upgradeability and total cost against the games and launchers you actually use.

Start by defining how you will play Xbox games
“Can I play Xbox games on a handheld PC?” has three different answers. A Windows handheld can run supported PC versions locally, stream some games from Xbox Cloud Gaming, or stream games installed on your Xbox console through Remote Play. None of these means that every Xbox console game can be installed natively on a handheld.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNative Windows installation
Install a supported game through the Xbox app, PC Game Pass or another PC storefront, then run it locally on the handheld. The Xbox Full Screen Experience can bring supported Xbox, Game Pass and other installed libraries into a controller-friendly interface, but it does not convert an incompatible game into a Windows game or guarantee console-level settings and frame rates.

Local play is the most demanding route for storage, memory, processor performance and battery power. It is also the route least dependent on network quality once the game is installed.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Play Anywhere applies only to supported titles. Xbox said in an August 20, 2025 post that the program had passed 1,000 supported games. For a qualifying purchase, Xbox describes shared access, progression and achievements between an Xbox console and Windows PC, including supported handheld PCs. Treat “over 1,000” as Xbox’s dated publisher figure, not a promise that every Xbox title runs natively or that every handheld can run every supported game at the same settings.
Cloud gaming
Cloud gaming renders the game on Microsoft’s servers and streams the result to the handheld. ASUS describes Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) on its Ally devices as requiring a Game Pass membership. Availability, supported games, plan requirements and regional access can change, so check the current Xbox terms for your country before buying a device for this purpose.
Cloud play reduces local storage and graphics requirements, but it makes your experience dependent on broadband speed, latency, Wi-Fi stability and service availability. A strong handheld cannot compensate for an unreliable connection.
Remote Play from your Xbox console
Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox console to the handheld. Your console must be configured and available, and both ends need a suitable network connection. This route is useful for playing your existing console library away from the television, but it is not a replacement for local Windows compatibility or cloud access.

Use this buying process
- List the games and launchers you actually use. Mark each title as Windows-native, Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud-only for your plan, console-only, Steam, Epic, Battle.net or another storefront. Include anti-cheat requirements and games that need a launcher or account beyond Steam.
- Choose the operating system. Select Windows when Xbox app access, PC Game Pass, multiple launchers or broad compatibility are priorities. Consider SteamOS when your library is predominantly Steam and you value a simplified console-style interface. Verify the exact operating system on the SKU; some product families offer both.
- Set a performance target. Decide whether 1080p at a high refresh rate, 800p or 720p at a steady frame rate, or lower settings is acceptable for your games. A faster processor cannot make a poorly optimized title or an incompatible anti-cheat system work.
- Size memory and storage for your library. More memory helps modern games, background launchers and texture-heavy titles. Storage determines how many large games you can keep installed and whether you can avoid frequent downloads.
- Check the physical experience. Compare screen size, aspect ratio, resolution, refresh rate, controls, weight, grip shape and accessibility features. Specifications do not reveal whether a particular shape is comfortable for your hands.
- Plan power and expansion. Compare battery capacity, charging wattage, dock requirements, SSD form factor and expansion options. Capacity in watt-hours is not a runtime guarantee.
- Add ownership costs. Include a Game Pass membership if you need it, a case, a compatible dock, additional storage and any local price or tax difference.
Windows versus SteamOS for an Xbox-focused library
| Consideration | Windows handheld | SteamOS handheld |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox app and PC Game Pass | Direct installation of supported Windows games | Not the default route; compatibility and workarounds vary by title |
| Other PC storefronts | Install supported Windows launchers such as Steam, Epic or Battle.net | Steam is the primary experience; non-Steam launchers may require additional setup |
| Xbox Play Anywhere | Run the supported Windows PC version locally | Check the individual game and compatibility layer; console ownership alone does not guarantee a SteamOS build |
| Cloud gaming | Use a supported browser or app where the service is available | Availability and setup depend on the service and current SteamOS support |
| Interface | Xbox Full Screen Experience can aggregate supported libraries, alongside the Windows desktop | Console-like Steam interface is the central experience |
Windows is the safer choice when your definition of “Xbox handheld” includes PC Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere and several launchers. SteamOS may be preferable when Xbox is secondary and nearly all of your games are verified or otherwise well supported on SteamOS. Check each essential game rather than relying on the operating system’s reputation.
Current handheld examples and what their specifications mean
The following figures are from manufacturer or Xbox product pages, not independent testing. Prices are page listings for the US market accessed in October 2026 and can change.

How to interpret processor and graphics tiers
Handheld processors combine CPU cores and integrated graphics, and their performance changes with power mode, cooling and charger status. Compare devices within the same power envelope instead of assuming that a model name alone predicts frame rate. Your target game matters more than a headline specification: a competitive game at a high refresh rate, a modern open-world release, and an older indie title place very different demands on the system.
Use a retailer’s return policy or a reputable game-specific test when available, but do not turn a manufacturer claim into a universal benchmark. ASUS says the ROG Xbox Ally X can deliver up to a 30% performance increase versus the earlier ROG Ally X in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages, using 1080p default settings and Turbo mode on AC and DC power. That is an ASUS comparison under stated conditions, not independent testing and not a prediction for every game.

Memory
Sixteen gigabytes can be adequate for many current games, but the operating system, launchers and integrated graphics share system memory. A 24GB or 32GB configuration gives more headroom for demanding games, texture settings and background applications. Memory is usually soldered, so choose the capacity at purchase rather than assuming a later upgrade.

Storage
A 512GB SSD is quickly reduced by Windows, updates and a few large games. A 1TB drive is more practical for a mixed Xbox, Steam and other-storefront library, although it can still fill quickly with modern releases. Check whether the model accepts a standard replacement drive, whether the slot is accessible without voiding warranty terms, and whether a microSD card is suitable for the games you intend to run.
Screen, controls and accessibility
Resolution and refresh rate
A 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 panel is sharp, but rendering every game at native resolution consumes more power than using 720p or 800p with upscaling. A 120Hz panel can make supported games and the interface feel smoother, yet it does not mean the hardware will render demanding games at 120 frames per second. Variable refresh support, brightness, response time and outdoor visibility can matter more than the maximum refresh number.
Size and aspect ratio
An 8-inch 16:10 screen provides more physical area than a 7-inch 16:9 panel and can make small interface text easier to read. It also adds size and may affect grip comfort. Compare the complete device dimensions and weight, not only the diagonal measurement.
Controls and accessibility
Check stick placement, trigger travel, D-pad shape, rear buttons, vibration, touch controls and the ease of reaching the power and volume buttons. If you use remapping, one-handed controls, larger text or an external controller, confirm that the operating system and game support those features. Xbox cited an estimate of 425 million players with disabilities worldwide in its 2025 accessibility discussion; accessibility needs are therefore a mainstream buying criterion, not an afterthought.

Battery, charging and travel
Battery capacity helps compare devices of similar hardware, but it does not equal playing time. Processor power mode, frame-rate cap, screen brightness, wireless radios, game engine and cooling behavior all change consumption. An 80Wh handheld may outlast a 60Wh model in one workload and not in another if it is driving a faster processor or brighter display.
ASUS’s Ally X battery comparison used Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics and Silent mode, comparing it with the prior ROG Ally X. Those conditions are too specific to become a universal runtime estimate, and no independent battery testing is established here.
Choose a practical power plan
- Use a lower-power or Silent mode for 2D games, streaming and older titles.
- Use a balanced mode for general play when you want a compromise between noise, performance and battery.
- Use Turbo or a higher-wattage mode for demanding local games, preferably while connected to the charger.
- Carry a USB-C charger that meets the handheld’s required wattage; a phone charger may charge slowly or fail to maintain performance.
Storage upgrades, docks and accessories
Xbox identifies a travel case and high-speed storage among separately sold Xbox Ally accessories. ASUS says the Ally supports external monitors over USB-C DisplayPort and recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300, or another dock capable of the described 130W setup. ASUS also specifies a standard 2280 M.2 drive. Confirm port layout, power delivery, physical fit and warranty terms for your exact model before buying a dock or SSD.
Buy accessories to solve a specific problem: a case for transport, additional storage for a large library, a dock for a monitor and wired peripherals, or a higher-capacity charger for sustained performance. A dock does not increase handheld graphics performance, and an external monitor can make a low-power mode look less capable if you expect desktop-sized resolution.

- Complete Windows setup. Install firmware, Windows updates and the manufacturer’s control software. Reboot after major driver or BIOS updates.
- Sign in to Xbox. Install or update the Xbox app, sign in with the account that owns your games or Game Pass membership, and verify the account region.
- Install the launchers you need. Add Steam, Epic, Battle.net or other storefronts only if they are part of your library. Keep each launcher updated and enable controller support where offered.
- Configure the Full Screen Experience. Add supported libraries and set the handheld’s launcher button to open the interface you prefer. Remember that aggregation does not imply universal compatibility.
- Test one representative game. Start with a title that reflects your heaviest expected workload. Set a frame-rate limit, choose a sensible resolution and test suspend/resume, controller input, audio and online features.
- Set up streaming separately. For cloud gaming, confirm your Game Pass plan and regional availability. For Remote Play, configure the Xbox console, enable remote features and test the home network before travelling.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every Xbox console game installs locally
Check for a Windows PC version, Play Anywhere support or a cloud/Remote Play path. Console ownership by itself does not create a Windows executable.

Buying on battery capacity alone
Compare capacity together with processor tier, screen resolution, brightness and power modes. Ask whether the supplied charger can sustain the advertised performance.
Choosing a display before choosing a frame-rate target
A 120Hz screen is useful only when your games and settings can feed it. A lower render resolution with a stable frame rate may be a better mobile experience than native resolution with stutter.
Ignoring launcher friction
Multiple storefronts can mean several sign-ins, overlays and update processes. If you want a console-like experience, prioritize a Windows handheld with a reliable full-screen launcher and test the games you use most.
Running out of storage
Estimate the installed size of your five or ten largest games, then leave room for updates and shader caches. Prefer a 1TB configuration or verify the SSD replacement path if you do not want to uninstall regularly.
Expecting cloud or Remote Play to work everywhere
Streaming needs a stable connection and service availability. Test from the locations where you will actually play, including hotel or public Wi-Fi, before relying on it for travel.
Quick Recap
Which type of buyer should choose which configuration?
- Xbox-first buyer without an existing console: Choose a Windows model, verify the PC versions of your target games and budget for any required Game Pass membership. Native Windows play should be your baseline; treat cloud access as an extra.
- Xbox console owner who mainly wants a second screen: A Windows handheld supports Remote Play and can also run PC games. Prioritize comfortable controls, Wi-Fi reliability, battery capacity and a good suspend/resume experience.
- Multi-storefront PC player: Choose Windows unless every essential launcher and game is confirmed on SteamOS. Memory and storage headroom are especially valuable when several launchers and large games share the device.
- Steam-focused player with occasional Xbox streaming: A SteamOS SKU may fit if your core library is verified and you are comfortable using a browser or another supported method for streaming. Confirm the exact cloud and controller setup first.
- Frequent traveller: Favor manageable weight, a case, a battery that fits your realistic workload and a charger compatible with your travel setup. Do not pay for a high-refresh display if you will normally cap games at a lower frame rate to extend battery life.
A final checklist before purchase
- Are your essential Xbox titles Windows-native, Play Anywhere, cloud-streamable or Remote Play targets?
- Does the exact SKU use Windows 11 Home or SteamOS, and does it include the memory and SSD capacity you need?
- Can the processor and integrated graphics meet your chosen resolution and frame-rate target?
- Are the screen size, brightness, aspect ratio, controls and weight comfortable for your hands and travel habits?
- What is the battery capacity, supplied charger wattage and expected power mode for your games?
- Can you replace the SSD, and does the model accept the storage format you plan to use?
- Have you included Game Pass, a case, dock, charger and storage in the total cost?
- Have you rechecked local price, stock, regional cloud availability and current plan terms on the day you buy?
