Choose a handheld gaming PC by starting with the games and storefronts you need, then compare performance in those games, realistic battery needs, comfort, and the price of the exact configuration available in your region. No single specification—especially battery capacity or processor name—can tell you which device is best for everyone.
Start with your games and storefronts
Write down the games you actually want to play and where you own or plan to buy them. A device that handles your library with little setup may suit you better than one with stronger headline specifications but more launcher, compatibility, or configuration work.

- Check each important game’s current compatibility with the device’s operating system and launcher.
- Look for games that require a particular anti-cheat system or have other platform restrictions.
- Decide how comfortable you are navigating a desktop-style PC interface on a handheld screen.

For Steam Deck models, consult Valve’s official technical specifications and Steam Deck OLED product page. Check the exact model and revision: specifications can differ, and an old comparison chart may describe a different version.

Compare performance in the games you play
There is no useful apples-to-apples performance comparison unless the game and test conditions match. When reading a benchmark—or comparing devices yourself—check all of these details:
- Game and scene: results from one title or test area do not predict performance in every game.
- Resolution and graphics: note the resolution, graphics preset, and any upscaling setting.
- Frame-rate target: compare results against the smoothness you want, not just the highest number reported.
- Power mode: the selected power profile affects both performance and energy use.
- Power source: establish whether the device was running on battery or connected to AC power.

Use matched results to decide whether a device can meet your preferred settings and frame-rate target. If a review tests different games, settings, or power conditions across models, treat the figures as separate observations rather than a direct ranking.

Watt-hours (Wh) describe battery capacity; they do not promise a particular number of gaming hours. Runtime changes with the game, display brightness, frame rate, power mode, wireless use, and software. A larger capacity can be useful context, but it cannot replace a test of the games and settings you care about.

ASUS specifies an 80Wh battery for the ROG Ally X. That is a manufacturer specification, not a measured runtime. The product page also lists 10W Silent, 15W Performance, and 25W Turbo modes, with 30W Turbo available on AC power; those mode ratings are not hours of battery life. ASUS ROG Ally X specifications.
For a meaningful runtime comparison, look for a test using the same game, graphics settings, frame-rate target, brightness, wireless conditions, and power mode. Check whether the test runs on battery, and whether it reports a repeatable result or a single session. If those conditions are missing or differ between devices, the reported hours are not directly comparable.

If you often play away from an outlet, consider whether a compatible USB-C PD power bank fits your needs. Before buying one, verify its output, capacity, and compatibility with the handheld; it is an optional way to extend play, not a substitute for checking the device’s own runtime.
Balance the screen and controls against portability
A larger, higher-resolution, or faster-refresh display can make games easier to see and feel more responsive, but screen specifications alone do not establish image quality or comfort. Compare the exact model’s screen size, resolution, refresh rate, weight, controls, and grip. If possible, hold the device before buying: hand comfort and the ability to reach controls matter during long sessions, and a specification sheet cannot tell you whether the shape suits you.

Check prices in the same country and compare configurations with similar storage and memory. Confirm what is included, the warranty, local availability, and whether a listed price applies to the exact model in stock. Prices and availability vary by region and configuration, so verify them with the manufacturer or retailer close to purchase.
A fair value comparison is not simply the lowest starting price versus the highest. Include the storage tier you need, any included accessories that matter to you, and the cost or inconvenience of adapting to a different software platform. Do not treat a price for one configuration as the price of every version.

- Choose for compatibility first if your must-play games or preferred storefronts are non-negotiable. Verify them individually before comparing hardware.
- Choose for time away from an outlet by prioritizing comparable battery tests for your games and settings, rather than ranking devices by Wh alone.
- Choose for performance by checking matched game benchmarks at your desired resolution, settings, and frame-rate target, with the same power-source condition.
- Choose for value by comparing the same local market and similar storage and memory configurations, then checking warranty and availability.
- Choose for comfort by considering display and controls together, and trying the grip if you can.
For an identifiable Windows option, ASUS specifies the ROG Ally X with Windows 11, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, up to 2TB of storage, an 80Wh battery, and a Full HD 120Hz display. Those specifications make it possible to compare a particular configuration, but they do not establish that it outperforms every alternative or delivers a particular runtime. The product details available at Lenovo’s Legion Go S page do not establish enough comparable information here to assess its price, battery, processor, or performance.
