Finished Halo Infinite’s campaign and ready for something else? Choose based on what you want next: Firefight for cooperative battles against Banished forces, social Arena for casual matches against other players, Big Team Battle for larger 12v12 fights, or Ranked for tracked competition. If you want to keep playing with friends against AI, start with Firefight.

Start with Firefight for co-op against the Banished

Firefight is the closest fit if you want to stay in Halo Infinite’s combat loop while cooperating with friends. Halo Support defines it as cooperative player-versus-environment play against enemy AI. Its variants offer different pacing: Classic is about enduring waves, King of the Hill adds a capture-and-defend objective, and Battle of the Academy follows a more linear defense-and-escape structure.

Firefight Classic: survive escalating waves

Four players face endless Banished waves that become harder over time. A set includes three rounds and a bonus round; complete the bonus objective to earn an extra life. This is the straightforward choice when the appeal is seeing how long a team can hold out.

Firefight: Battle of the Academy: follow a linear mission

This variant gives the session a more directed shape: four players defend against Banished forces and then escape. Halo Support’s guide lists Cole Protocol and Out With A Bang.

Choose PvP by scale and pressure

Social Arena for casual 4v4

Arena is the smaller-team option: four players face four opponents. Social playlists such as Quick Play or Arena Social are suitable when you want human opponents without ranked stakes; social games do not affect rank. The exact modes and maps in a playlist may change.

Big Team Battle for 12v12 matches

Choose BTB if you would rather play on larger maps with more players on each side. Its documented format is 12v12, making it a substantially larger match than Arena.

Ranked when you want results to count

Ranked playlists track results and affect rank. They are the option for players who specifically want measured competitive progress, rather than a casual match. Ranked variants rotate, so consult the live listing before choosing a particular format.

Check what is currently available before queuing

Halo Infinite’s playlist contents are not all fixed. Halo Support describes staple playlists as non-rotating, while modes and maps may be added during weekly refreshes; some modes appear only during limited-time windows. The May 5, 2026 Firefight: Gauntlet patch notes said its featured playlist was scheduled to leave matchmaking on May 19, 2026, with its maps and mode then joining the Firefight staple playlist. For present availability, use the current in-game listing and Halo Support’s playlist page.

In supported playlists, Match Composer lets you choose which modes to search for. Selecting fewer options can lengthen matchmaking because it narrows the games you will accept. Inspect the playlist’s Game list if you want to see what it contains before queuing.

Play a specific game with friends using Custom Games

If matchmaking is not the goal and your group wants a specific game, use a Custom Game with friends. Halo Support notes that Custom Games do not complete challenges or contribute to Battle Pass progress. For a less structured warm-up, Academy Training Mode offers bot practice with adjustable scenarios and difficulty.
