1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a hair dryer by starting with adjustable heat and airflow controls, then match the attachments to your routine. A diffuser is the key attachment for curly styling; a concentrator nozzle is useful when you direct air along a brush or a specific section. Give more weight to control range, drying performance, comfort and electrical safety than to labels such as ionic, ceramic or tourmaline.
Use the lowest practical heat, keep the dryer moving and avoid holding it close to wet hair. Hair type changes the settings and technique you need, but no wattage, technology label or distance guarantees damage-free drying.

Start with the controls, not the marketing label
A useful dryer lets you change heat and airflow separately. That combination matters because rough drying and detailed styling need different air movement, while fine, fragile or already-dry hair generally needs gentler heat. Consumer Reports quotes Drybar senior director Anna Kimble recommending “at least three temperature/speed settings” so users can customize styling for different hair types and blowouts.

|---|---|---|
| Heat settings | Lets you begin gently and increase warmth only when drying time or styling results require it. | At least three heat levels, with a genuinely lower setting for fine, short or damaged hair. |
| Airflow or speed settings | Higher airflow can remove water during rough drying; lower speed gives more control around a brush or diffuser. | Separate speed control rather than one combined hot/fast switch. |
| Attachments | Changes how air reaches the hair and determines whether the dryer suits your routine. | A compatible diffuser for curls; a concentrator for directed drying and brush work. |
| Handling | A heavy or poorly balanced dryer is harder to keep moving and harder to aim accurately. | Comfortable grip, manageable weight and controls you can operate without changing your hold. |
| Safety and compliance | Electrical requirements and protective markings vary by market. | Required local certification, intact cord and a manual that specifies safe use. |
Do not treat a long feature list as evidence of better drying. Compare how easily you can select a setting, attach the tool you need and keep the dryer at a safe distance for the entire session.

Match the dryer to your hair and routine
Fine, fragile or short hair
Begin on low heat and a controlled airflow. Short hair often dries quickly, so extra wattage or maximum heat may add exposure without solving a real problem. Use a concentrator only when you are deliberately shaping a section; otherwise, broad airflow can finish drying without forcing one spot to become hot.
- Blot excess water with a towel rather than rubbing aggressively.
- Start on the lowest comfortable heat and a low or medium speed.
- Keep the dryer moving and raise airflow before raising heat if drying is taking too long.
- Stop as soon as the hair is dry and styled; do not continue heating a dry section.
Thick, long or dense hair
For more hair, practical airflow and a workable drying time are important. Use higher airflow for the initial rough-dry stage, then lower the speed when you begin controlled styling. Do not make maximum heat your shortcut: a faster-feeling session can still expose the surface to more heat than necessary.
Divide long or dense hair into sections so air reaches the roots and inner layers. Dry the sections that retain the most water first, and keep the nozzle moving rather than parking it near the scalp or ends. If a dryer cannot maintain useful airflow without becoming uncomfortable to hold, its headline wattage is not helping your routine.
Curly, coily or tightly textured hair
A diffuser spreads airflow over a wider area and reduces the concentrated blast that can disturb curl formation. Consumer Reports quotes Kimble advising people with curly hair to make sure the dryer can fit a high-quality diffuser attachment.
- Confirm that the diffuser is designed for the dryer’s outlet; a loose or incompatible fit can leak air or detach during use.
- Use low or medium airflow while the curl pattern is still forming.
- Work in sections and move the diffuser steadily instead of directing a narrow jet at one strand.
- Increase heat only if necessary for drying time, and keep the attachment moving.
A diffuser is a tool for distributing air, not a guarantee against frizz or heat damage. Results still depend on the condition of the hair, the amount of water left after blotting and how long each section is exposed.

Straight or wavy hair and brush styling
A concentrator nozzle narrows airflow so you can aim it along a brush or down the hair shaft. That makes it useful for a smooth blowout or for directing a fringe, ends or a single section. Use lower speed when precision matters; stronger airflow is more useful while removing water before the brush work begins.
Keep the nozzle pointed along the section rather than directly at one small patch. If you have to hold the dryer in one position to get the desired shape, choose less heat and reposition the section instead.

Attachments should follow the job you actually do
| Routine | Most useful attachment | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| Diffuse curls or coils | Diffuser | It must fit the dryer securely and provide broad, even airflow. |
| Brush blowout | Concentrator nozzle | The opening should be narrow enough for directed airflow without forcing you to hold it against the hair. |
| Rough drying before styling | Nozzle-free outlet or the broadest supplied attachment | Air should cover a section efficiently while you keep the dryer moving. |
Check compatibility before buying a separate attachment. A universal-looking opening is not proof that a diffuser or nozzle will lock on, stay centered or withstand normal movement. If your routine alternates between curls and brush styling, prioritize a dryer that supports both attachments rather than buying a technology-labeled model that lacks one of them.
Use heat deliberately: what the evidence supports
Consumer Reports relays dermatologist guidance to remove excess water with a towel, use a medium setting, hold the dryer about 6 inches away and consider a heat protectant. These are practical recommendations, not universal safety thresholds. Hair condition, texture, density and styling time all change the exposure.
A 2011 Annals of Dermatology experiment by Yoonhee Lee and colleagues repeatedly treated hair tresses under ambient drying and several dryer conditions. The tested dryer setups included the following:

| Test setup | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 15 cm distance, 47°C | Lower-temperature drying at a relatively greater distance. |
| 10 cm distance, 61°C | Closer drying with higher measured temperature. |
| 5 cm distance, 95°C | Very close, high-temperature exposure. |
Surface damage tended to rise as test temperature increased. The authors concluded that, in their experiment, a dryer held 15 cm away and kept moving caused less surface damage than natural drying. The result came from controlled hair tresses, not personalized clinical testing, so it does not mean that a particular distance makes home drying harmless or that air-drying is always healthier.

A practical heat-and-distance routine
- Remove excess water with a towel before turning on the dryer. Starting with dripping-wet hair lengthens the session.
- Begin on a low or medium heat setting. Increase heat only when the current setting cannot meet your drying or styling need.
- Hold the dryer roughly 6 inches away as a practical starting point, or about 15 cm when you can maintain that distance comfortably.
- Keep the dryer in continuous motion. Do not leave hot air fixed on one section while you search for a brush or change your grip.
- Use the attachment that distributes or directs air for the job, then stop when the section is dry.
A heat protectant can be part of this routine, but the evidence here does not establish one product, formula or level of protection as superior.
How much should ionic, ceramic and tourmaline claims influence you?
Ionic, ceramic and tourmaline are common technology labels. CHOICE reported in its consumer testing guide, updated 11 December 2025, that its tests did not indicate improved performance from those technologies. That finding describes the models and tests CHOICE evaluated; it is not proof that every dryer using one of these terms performs identically.
Because the labels do not replace measured drying performance, evaluate them after the fundamentals:
- Can you select heat and airflow independently?
- Does the dryer accept the diffuser or concentrator your routine requires?
- Can you hold and aim it comfortably for the full session?
- Does it dry efficiently at a setting you can tolerate without excessive heat?
- Does it meet the electrical requirements in your market?
If two otherwise suitable dryers differ mainly by an ionic, ceramic or tourmaline claim, the label alone is not a sound reason to pay more or expect less damage.

Wattage is a power figure, not a quality ranking
Consumer Reports quotes hair-restoration surgeon Nilofer Farjo saying, “1,800 watts is good for home use.” That is expert guidance, not an independently established universal standard. Wattage indicates electrical power draw; it does not by itself tell you how efficiently a dryer turns power into useful airflow, how hot its outlet becomes or how comfortable it is to use.
CHOICE also reported that several models priced under $100 outperformed costlier counterparts in its testing. The article passage does not give a count, and the result should be read as a reminder that price is an imperfect proxy rather than as a promise that an inexpensive dryer will beat every expensive one.
| Question | How to use the answer |
|---|---|
| Is the wattage around 1,800 watts? | Treat it as a reasonable home-use reference from Farjo’s quoted advice, not a pass/fail test. |
| Is the price higher? | Pay only when the extra cost brings a control, attachment, handling advantage or verified performance you need. |
| Is the price lower than $100? | Do not assume weak performance; CHOICE found several such models outperforming costlier models in its tests. |
Safety, electrical compliance and travel checks
Use the requirements that apply where you live and follow the model’s manual. CHOICE’s Australian guidance highlights product identification and the RCM marking, avoiding wet areas, checking cords and replacing or servicing a dryer that overheats or smells burnt. The RCM is an Australian compliance mark; other markets use different approval systems.
- Keep the dryer away from sinks, tubs and splashing water, even when the appliance is switched off but plugged in.
- Inspect the cord, plug and housing before use. Do not continue using a damaged cable or a dryer with a cracked body.
- Stop using the appliance if it overheats, emits a burnt smell or behaves erratically; arrange service or replacement according to the manual.
- Check the voltage and plug requirements before travel. Do not assume a dryer is dual-voltage because it is compact or because an adapter fits the plug.
- Keep the air inlet clear so the dryer can maintain airflow and does not run hotter than intended.
A buying process that works for most people
- Describe your routine. Write down whether you rough-dry, diffuse curls, use a round brush, or combine those jobs. The routine determines the attachment and the useful speed range.
- Set your control minimum. Prefer separate heat and airflow controls with at least three settings, following Kimble’s Consumer Reports guidance.
- Choose attachments. Select a compatible diffuser for curly or coily styling and a concentrator for directed airflow or brush work.
- Assess handling. Hold the dryer if possible, or examine its weight, balance, grip and control placement. You must be able to keep it moving and maintain distance.
- Compare real drying performance. Look for independent testing or a clear return policy rather than inferring performance from wattage or a technology label.
- Verify safety and market fit. Check local compliance marks, voltage, plug type, cord condition and the manual’s operating instructions.
- Compare total value. Include the attachments you would otherwise need to buy and choose the least expensive option that meets your controls, performance and safety requirements.
Common buying and styling mistakes
Choosing maximum heat to save time
High heat can raise surface temperature quickly. Improve drying time first with towel blotting, sectioning and useful airflow; increase heat only when those changes are insufficient.
Buying a diffuser later without checking fit
A diffuser that does not lock onto the outlet securely is a poor solution for curly styling. Confirm compatibility before purchase.

Treating wattage as a performance score
Two dryers with similar wattage can differ in airflow, controls, balance and drying results. Use wattage as context, not as a ranking.
Assuming a technology label proves protection
CHOICE’s 2025 testing did not show improved performance from ionic, ceramic or tourmaline technologies. Judge the complete tool instead.
Ignoring the cord, plug or market voltage
Electrical safety is part of suitability. Follow local rules and the manual, and verify travel specifications rather than guessing.
Three example routines
Fine, short hair before work
- Towel-blot until the hair is damp rather than dripping.
- Use low heat and low-to-medium airflow, directing air broadly.
- Attach a concentrator only for a fringe or defined section.
- Stop as soon as the hair is dry.
Curly hair with a diffuser
- Blot excess water and divide the hair into manageable sections.
- Fit the compatible diffuser and start on low or medium airflow.
- Hold the dryer about 6 inches away where practical, keeping it moving and avoiding prolonged heat on one area.
- Raise heat only if needed to complete drying, then stop.
Long, thick hair with a brush finish
- Blot thoroughly and divide the hair into sections.
- Use higher airflow for rough drying while keeping the dryer moving.
- Switch to a concentrator and lower the speed for brush work.
- Keep the nozzle aimed along the section, maintain distance and use only the heat needed for the shape.
What a good final choice looks like
The right dryer is the one that lets you control exposure and complete your actual routine comfortably. For most buyers, that means separate heat and airflow settings, at least three levels, a diffuser or concentrator that fits the job, manageable handling and verified electrical compliance. Technology labels, wattage and price can help describe a model, but none should outrank those practical requirements.
