Choose a graphics card by matching it to your actual workload and display target, then verify software support, VRAM, case clearance, power draw, PSU capacity, and connectors. For gaming, compare performance at your resolution and settings; for creative work, check the exact applications, effects, codecs, and plugins; for local AI, confirm framework support and that the model fits in usable VRAM. Only after those checks should you compare current independent tests and local prices for specific cards.
There is no universal “best” GPU or single VRAM minimum. A card that is excellent for a 1440p gaming build may be a poor choice for a renderer, video codec, or local model that depends on different software and memory capacity.

Start with the workload, not the brand
Write down what the computer must do before looking at model names. The useful comparison changes with the job: gaming is governed by resolution, refresh rate, image-quality settings, ray tracing and upscaling; creative work depends on the applications and effects you use; local AI depends on frameworks, model size, quantization and available VRAM.
For gaming
Record the monitor resolution and refresh rate, then list the games that matter most. A card for 1080p esports at a high refresh rate is a different purchase from one intended for 4K single-player games with ray-traced lighting. Note whether you prefer native rendering or are comfortable using an upscaler and frame generation. A benchmark average at a different resolution or preset can mislead you, so seek tests that match your intended settings.

For creative applications
Name the software and the operations that consume the most time: a particular renderer, timeline effect, color workflow, simulation, export codec, or plugin. GPU acceleration varies by application and by version. A card with impressive gaming numbers may not accelerate your preferred effect, while a card with the right supported renderer can finish the task faster at a lower gaming score.
Codec support matters for video work. AMD describes Radeon products as offering hardware-accelerated video effects and encode/decode for HEVC, H.264 and AV1. That is a vendor capability statement, not a guarantee that every editor or plugin will expose every function; verify support in the documentation for your exact application and version.
For local AI
Identify the framework, model family and task first. Image generation, inference, fine-tuning and large-language-model work can have different requirements. Check whether the framework supports the GPU architecture and operating system, whether the model fits after accounting for the runtime and other allocations, and whether quantization changes the quality or speed you need.

Usable VRAM is the capacity limit, not a complete speed rating. A model that barely fits may still be impractical if it constantly moves data or leaves too little memory for a larger batch. For multi-GPU workloads, confirm that the software can distribute the model or workload in the way you intend.
Build a shortlist using the right evidence
Once the workload is clear, collect independent tests that reproduce it. For games, use results at your resolution, quality preset and ray-tracing mode. For creative work, prioritize tests in your exact application, renderer and codec. For AI, look for the same framework, model, quantization and batch or prompt settings. Vendor feature pages explain supported technologies, but they do not establish a neutral ranking across brands or workloads.
Keep three measurements separate:
- Compute performance: how quickly the card renders, encodes or processes your task.
- Memory capacity: how large a scene, texture set, timeline or model can fit without spilling into system memory.
- Software path: whether the application can actually use the GPU, its acceleration API, and its specialized features.
Do not substitute one for another. More VRAM cannot compensate for unsupported software, and a faster chip cannot run a workload that does not fit in memory.

Understand what VRAM does—and what it does not do
Video memory stores data used by games and applications. AMD explains that additional VRAM can permit higher graphics settings and features; NVIDIA similarly describes more graphics memory as enabling larger or more complex tasks. In practice, capacity affects whether the workload fits and how much data can remain close to the GPU. It does not by itself tell you how fast the GPU will process that data.

High-resolution textures, ray-tracing data and large game worlds can increase memory use. If a game exceeds the card’s practical capacity, you may need to lower textures or other settings even when the GPU has enough compute power for the target frame rate. Compare memory use in the games you play rather than adopting a universal minimum.
Creative memory decisions
Large compositions, high-resolution footage, complex 3D scenes and effects can consume memory quickly. Leave headroom for the application, operating system and background tools. A project that fits only when the card is otherwise idle may fail when you add a second layer, a larger preview or another application.
AI memory decisions
Model weights are only part of the allocation. Runtime buffers, context length, activations, batch size and the framework itself also consume VRAM. Quantization can reduce the footprint, but it may alter output quality or supported operations. Treat a published capacity as a ceiling and calculate a realistic working allocation before buying.
Separate gaming features from raw raster speed
When comparing gaming cards, evaluate native or raster performance, ray-tracing performance, and the quality and availability of upscaling and frame generation in the games you actually play. These are separate questions. A card can lead in conventional rendering but trail in ray tracing, or deliver a feature that is unavailable in your favorite title.

Ray tracing
Ray tracing can change the workload substantially. Compare results with the ray-tracing settings you intend to use, not just an overall score that mixes modes.
Upscaling and frame generation
Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output; frame generation creates additional displayed frames. Their usefulness depends on game support, image quality, latency and the base frame rate. Treat them as part of a game-specific configuration rather than a universal replacement for GPU horsepower.
Check creative software and driver support before buying
Open the support pages for the exact editor, renderer, plugin and codec. Look for the acceleration API, supported GPU families, driver requirements and known limitations. Confirm that the feature works on your operating system and edition, especially if the workflow depends on a specialized renderer or a third-party plugin.
AMD’s creator materials specifically cite hardware-accelerated effects and HEVC, H.264 and AV1 encode/decode. That makes those capabilities relevant when your workflow uses them, but the final decision still depends on implementation in your chosen software. NVIDIA’s creative selector similarly organizes recommendations by workflow; use such guidance as a compatibility starting point and validate it against application documentation and independent tests.
Verify physical and electrical compatibility
The exact add-in-board card matters more than the GPU name. Partner designs can be longer, wider, thicker, heavier or more power-hungry than a reference specification. Before ordering, compare the card’s dimensions and slot thickness with the case’s clearance, check radiator and front-fan space, and confirm that adjacent slots will remain usable.

| Model | VRAM | Total board power | Recommended PSU | Power connectors | Interface | Form factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9070 | 16 GB | 220 W | 650 W | Two 8-pin | PCIe Gen 5 | Dual-slot |
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | 16 GB | 304 W | 750 W | Two 8-pin | PCIe Gen 5 | Dual-slot |
Those wattages and PSU recommendations come from AMD’s reference guide. Check the chosen board-partner card for its own dimensions, connector arrangement and recommended power supply. NVIDIA’s product comparison information likewise warns that system power varies with configuration and that listed specifications describe reference designs that may differ from partner cards.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPower-supply checks
- Compare the card’s stated recommendation with your PSU’s continuous rated capacity, age and quality.
- Confirm that the PSU has the required number and type of dedicated GPU connectors; avoid relying on an unsafe adapter or a single cable where the manufacturer requires separate connections.
- Include the CPU and other components in the system-power calculation. A recommendation based on a reference configuration is not a guarantee for an overclocked or unusually demanding build.
Case and motherboard checks
- Measure GPU length, height and thickness against the case’s published clearance, including front radiators, drive cages and power cables.
- Check that the card’s slot thickness does not block a needed expansion slot or restrict airflow.
- Confirm the motherboard has an appropriate full-length PCIe slot and that the case can provide the ventilation the card’s heat output requires.
Evaluate local AI capacity and support separately
AMD describes the 16 GB Radeon RX 9070 as an entry point for Radeon AI acceleration. It also describes the Radeon AI PRO R9700 as having 32 GB of VRAM and multi-GPU support for large language models and other compute-heavy workloads. These are AMD product-positioning statements, not independent throughput benchmarks or a guarantee that a particular framework will use every feature.
For an AI purchase, make a compatibility checklist:
- Identify the framework and version you will run.
- Confirm support for the GPU architecture, operating system and required acceleration backend.
- Calculate the model’s memory use, including weights, quantization, context, activations, runtime overhead and your intended batch size.
- Decide whether one GPU is sufficient or whether the software supports the multi-GPU layout you can build.
- Find independent measurements for your exact model and task before treating a vendor claim as a performance expectation.
Compare the complete cost, not just the card
Street prices, stock and driver support change quickly. The available product information does not establish a current universal best-value GPU, so compare current local prices with independent workload results at the time you buy.
Include costs that the card may trigger:
- A higher-capacity or newer PSU if your existing unit cannot meet the card’s recommendation or connector requirements.
- A larger case, extra intake or exhaust fans, or a different cooling layout if the card does not physically or thermally fit.
- Additional memory or storage if the workload’s assets, datasets or scratch files exceed the rest of the system.
- The opportunity cost of a card that is fast in one benchmark but unsupported or inefficient in your primary application.
For a fair comparison, divide the total upgrade cost by performance in the task you care about, while keeping capacity and software compatibility as pass/fail conditions rather than reducing everything to one synthetic score.
A step-by-step buying procedure
- Define the target. Write down gaming resolution and refresh rate, creative applications and effects, or AI framework, model and quantization.
- Set the quality or throughput goal. Decide which game settings, export time, render time, batch size or model context you consider acceptable.
- Estimate memory use. Check project, texture or model requirements and leave practical headroom for the application and operating system.
- Shortlist compatible GPUs. Remove cards lacking the required software support, acceleration API, codec or framework.
- Read matching independent tests. Use the same resolution, preset, application, renderer, codec, model and framework whenever possible.
- Inspect the exact board-partner model. Verify length, width, thickness, slot occupancy, cooling clearance, connectors and board power.
- Validate the whole system. Check PSU capacity and cables, motherboard slot, case airflow and CPU balance for the intended workload.
- Check current local pricing and availability. Reconfirm those details immediately before purchase because launch information and historical prices do not establish today’s stock or value.
- Keep a fallback. If the preferred card is unavailable or exceeds the system’s power or space limits, return to the shortlist and choose the next model that still passes the workload and compatibility tests.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by brand or tier alone
Brand reputation and product tiers do not reveal how a card behaves in your renderer, game settings or AI framework. Start with the workload evidence instead.

Treating VRAM as a speed score
Capacity determines what can fit; compute architecture, clocks, software and drivers determine how quickly supported work is processed. Compare both.
Using a single benchmark as a universal ranking
A synthetic score or one game cannot stand in for a codec export, a ray-traced title or a local model. Match the test to the job.
Ignoring the partner-card design
Reference specifications do not guarantee the dimensions, cooler, connector layout or power draw of the model in the retailer’s listing. Read that exact listing and the manufacturer’s specification sheet.

Practical decision rules
For gaming, choose the least expensive card that meets your target resolution, settings and refresh rate in the games you play, with acceptable ray-tracing and upscaling behavior. For creative work, prioritize the card that your exact applications, renderers, effects and codecs can use, then verify that its VRAM accommodates your largest projects. For local AI, make framework compatibility and usable VRAM pass/fail requirements before comparing throughput.
After that, reject any model that cannot physically fit, cannot be powered safely, or requires system changes you have not budgeted for. Recheck independent tests, drivers, prices and partner-card specifications immediately before placing the order.
