Choose a graphics card by starting with your monitor’s exact native resolution and the games and settings you want to play—not its 280Hz label alone. A 280Hz refresh rate describes how often the display can update; it does not mean a GPU can render 280 frames per second (FPS) in every game. Confirm that the exact card supports your monitor’s input and refresh mode, then compare independent benchmarks at your resolution and settings before choosing a performance tier.
Start with the monitor’s exact resolution and refresh mode
“Ultrawide” is not a resolution. Find the monitor’s native resolution, supported refresh-rate range, and the input required for its intended high-refresh mode in the monitor’s specifications or manual. A 280Hz mode may depend on the specific input and resolution, so do not infer compatibility from the monitor’s headline refresh rate alone. Check the exact graphics card’s available outputs against that input and mode. Connector names and maximum display-output specifications help establish whether a card can connect to a display mode; they do not establish how fast it will render a particular game.
Set a realistic frame-rate goal for your games
Decide whether you need the GPU to render close to 280 FPS, or whether you mainly want to take advantage of the monitor’s high-refresh capability when a game can run fast. Demanding games, higher graphics quality, and ray tracing can change performance substantially. A 280Hz monitor does not guarantee that a game will reach 280 FPS.

Also distinguish rendered frames from generated frames if you are considering frame-generation features. Generated frames can affect displayed smoothness, but they are not the same as frames the GPU renders directly. Decide whether those features are acceptable for your games and preferences before comparing results.
Use matched, independent game benchmarks to choose performance
Compare benchmarks for the games you actually play, at the monitor’s native resolution and the quality settings you intend to use. Include ray tracing results if you plan to enable it, and note whether the results use upscaling or frame generation. Look at frame-time behavior as well as average FPS: an average alone can obscure uneven delivery.

They do not establish that a specific card can sustain 280 FPS in any particular game. Treat any performance tier as unproven until you find relevant, independent benchmarks for your exact use.

Check the exact card and your PC before buying
Model specifications can help with compatibility and system planning, but verify the precise board-partner card you intend to buy. For example, AMD’s product specifications list the Radeon RX 7800 XT with 16 GB GDDR6, 263 W typical desktop board power, a 700 W minimum power-supply recommendation, DisplayPort 2.1, and HDMI 2.1: AMD graphics specifications. These details do not show whether the card will meet a 280 FPS target in your games.
