These recommendations are model-specific, so confirm the exact model’s defaults and supported values in Google’s Gemini thinking documentation before setting the API parameter.
What a Gemini thinking level changes
The thinking_level setting tells a supported Gemini model how much reasoning effort to apply before producing an answer. It is a control over the model’s reasoning and tool-orchestration budget, not a promise that every response will use a fixed number of hidden steps. Gemini models can adjust thinking dynamically by default, and the available levels, defaults, and behavior differ by model.

That distinction matters when you move between model versions. A level name such as “high” does not have a universal meaning across the Gemini family. Always check the row for the model you are actually calling in the current Gemini API thinking table. A setting that is valid for one model can be rejected by another, and a default that is useful for one model may be wasteful or too shallow for another.

| Task or constraint | Starting level | Why | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real-time chat, incident response, quick drafting, or fast data analysis | Low | Google describes low as reducing time to answer for latency-sensitive work. | Run representative prompts if a faster answer could reduce accuracy or completeness. |
| Routine work, general questions, complex code, or agentic workflows on Gemini 3.8 Flash | Medium | Medium is the documented default and Google’s general starting point for most work; it is also recommended for complex code and agentic use on 3.8 Flash. | Check whether your workload regularly needs deeper decomposition or tool planning. |
| Deep reasoning, mathematics, difficult coding, or long multi-step tool use | High | High is intended to maximize reasoning and tool-orchestration capability. | Make sure your output-token cap leaves room for both thinking and the visible answer. |
| Very simple queries on a model that explicitly supports it | Minimal | Minimal can target simple requests where speed is more important than extra reasoning. | Availability is model-specific. It is not supported by Gemini 3.8 Flash. |
The table is a starting policy, not a benchmark. A short question can still require high reasoning if it hides a proof, constraint-satisfaction problem, or several tool calls. Conversely, a long prompt may only need low thinking when the task is straightforward extraction or formatting.

Check the exact model before choosing a value
Google’s model table shows why copying a setting from one Gemini product to another is risky. The following values are the documented examples relevant to this decision:
| Model | Documented default | Documented supported levels or guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | Medium | Low, medium, high | Use medium as the default starting point; low is the latency option and high is for demanding reasoning. Minimal is unsupported. |
| Gemini 3.7 Flash | Medium | Low, medium, high | Do not assume 3.8-specific behavior without checking the current table for 3.7. |
| Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite | Thinking off by default | Low, medium, high | Its default differs substantially from the 3.x Flash models, so an omitted setting does not mean the same thing. |
| Gemini 3.5 Flash | Model guidance identifies medium as the best-quality choice for most tasks | Google’s update describes low as faster and cheaper, high as maximum reasoning depth, and minimal as aimed at simple queries | Treat these descriptions as guidance for 3.5 Flash only; do not silently transfer them to another model. |
Model names, availability, defaults, and supported values can change. Before deploying a configuration, open the current Gemini thinking reference, locate the exact model identifier in your request, and confirm that the level you plan to send is listed for that model.
When to use low thinking
Latency-critical conversations and operations
Choose low when a person is waiting in a live chat, an operator needs a quick incident update, or an application must keep an interactive turn responsive. Google specifically positions low for latency-sensitive incident response and real-time chat. It is also a sensible first setting for a rapid draft whose main value is arriving quickly.
Recommended Free Tools
Fast analysis and transformations
Low can fit routine classification, extraction, summarization, rewriting, and simple data analysis when the input has clear structure and the desired output is easy to check. Define the expected format tightly so the model spends its limited reasoning effort on the requested transformation rather than deciding what the task means.
What to watch for
Low is a trade-off, not a quality guarantee. If responses omit constraints, make arithmetic mistakes, or stop before completing a sequence of actions, move the same prompt to medium before changing the prompt itself. Test a small set of real requests; the official guidance does not provide a universal quality or latency percentage for low.

Why medium is the normal starting point
Balanced behavior for everyday work
On Gemini 3.8 Flash, medium is the default and Google’s recommended starting point for most tasks. It is appropriate when you need a dependable answer but do not yet know whether the workload benefits from extra reasoning. General research, planning, explanation, content drafting, and ordinary coding questions can begin here.
Complex code and agentic use
Google also recommends medium for complex code and agentic use cases on Gemini 3.8 Flash. In these workflows, the model may need to interpret requirements, decide on an action, and use tools, yet high is not automatically necessary for every run. Start at medium, inspect failures, and reserve high for cases where the model’s planning or verification is the bottleneck.
When medium is not enough
Escalate to high when a representative task repeatedly fails because it needs deeper decomposition, careful mathematical reasoning, difficult debugging, or several dependent tool calls. Keep the prompt and other settings constant while you test the level so you can attribute any change to thinking effort rather than to a different request.
When high is worth the extra reasoning
Deep reasoning and mathematics
High is intended for problems where intermediate reasoning materially affects the result: proofs, multi-condition calculations, symbolic or numerical mathematics, and decisions that require checking several constraints. It is a better starting point than low when an incorrect shortcut is more costly than additional response time.
Difficult coding and debugging
Use high for hard coding tasks such as tracing an interaction across multiple components, designing a change with many constraints, or diagnosing a failure that requires several hypotheses and verification steps. High does not replace tests, code review, or a clear specification; it gives the model more room to reason about them.

Multi-step tool orchestration
High is also the choice for workflows that require planning and coordinating several tool calls. If an agent must gather information, transform it, call another tool, and reconcile the results, extra reasoning can help it maintain the sequence. Monitor for unnecessary deliberation, and lower the level if the workflow is simple enough that the additional effort adds delay without improving the outcome.
Why minimal needs special caution
Minimal is not a universal “thinking off” switch. Its availability and meaning depend on the model. Google’s documentation lists it for some models and describes it as suitable for simple queries, while Gemini 3.8 Flash does not support it. Sending minimal to 3.8 Flash returns an error, so use low when you need a latency-oriented setting on that model.
Even where minimal is offered, read the model’s documentation instead of assuming that complex requests will never receive any internal reasoning. The level name is an API option with model-specific behavior, not a guarantee that every request follows an identical execution path.
A step-by-step method for selecting a level
- Identify the exact model. Record the model identifier used by your application, not just a family label such as “Flash.” Open the current thinking-level table and confirm its default and supported values.
- Classify the task by failure cost. Mark whether the request is routine and easy to check, interactive and time-sensitive, or difficult and multi-step. A high-cost error should push you toward medium or high even when the prompt is short.
- Choose the lowest level that plausibly meets the requirement. Use low for latency-first work, medium for the general case, and high for deep reasoning. Use minimal only when the model explicitly supports it and the task is genuinely simple.
- Set the level in the request using the model’s documented API shape. The field is named
thinking_levelin Google’s guidance, but SDKs and model generations can expose configuration differently. Follow the syntax in the current API reference rather than copying an example intended for another SDK. - Test representative prompts. Use the same small sample of real tasks at two adjacent levels. Compare answer quality, latency, and token cost. This is an evaluation method, not a published benchmark, so record your own results rather than quoting a universal multiplier.
- Promote or demote deliberately. Move up when errors come from insufficient reasoning or tool planning. Move down when quality is already acceptable and latency or cost is the limiting factor. Keep a note of the task class and the reason for the change.
- Recheck after a model change. A new model version can change defaults and supported values. Re-run the model-table check and a small evaluation whenever you change the model identifier.
Thinking tokens, pricing, and output limits
When thinking is enabled, Google counts thinking tokens as part of output pricing. A higher level can therefore affect both the time to answer and the amount billed, although the actual allocation is model-dependent. Do not infer a fixed token cost from the level name alone.
max_output_tokens is a hard cap on the combined visible response and thinking tokens. It does not tell the model to think less; it limits how much it can generate. If the cap is reached during reasoning, the request can end incomplete and may return truncated or empty output. This failure can look like a model-quality problem when the real cause is the cap.

When you need lower cost or latency without risking a hard cutoff, Google recommends lowering the thinking level to low or medium. Treat that as a control choice: reducing the level changes the model’s reasoning budget, while reducing max_output_tokens simply imposes a ceiling. If you use a cap, leave room for both hidden reasoning and the answer your application must display.
Task-by-task starting recommendations
| Example workload | Start here | Escalate when | Stay lower when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live support reply or incident-room update | Low | The answer must reconcile several systems or explain a complicated root cause. | The response is short, factual, and checked by an operator. |
| Routine drafting, rewriting, or summarizing | Low or medium | The brief has many constraints, audiences, or factual relationships that are easy to miss. | Speed matters and a person will edit the draft. |
| General question answering | Medium | The question requires a proof, extensive comparison, or several dependent calculations. | The task is simple extraction from clearly supplied text. |
| Complex software design or debugging | Medium | The model must trace multiple components, satisfy competing requirements, or plan tests and tool calls. | The change is a small, well-specified edit. |
| Mathematics or constraint-heavy analysis | High | Only if the problem remains unresolved and the model supports a higher setting. | The operation is a direct calculation with an independently checked result. |
| Agent that performs several dependent actions | Medium on Gemini 3.8 Flash | Planning errors, missed dependencies, or poor tool sequencing persist. | The agent executes one predictable tool call with a clear schema. |
These are starting points derived from Google’s model-specific descriptions, not guarantees for every prompt. The quality of your instructions, tool schemas, context, and verification still affects the result.
How to evaluate two levels fairly
Build a small, repeatable sample
Collect prompts that represent the production mix: a few routine requests, the hardest recurring cases, and any workflow where an error is expensive. Keep the model, prompt, context, tools, and output cap unchanged while comparing levels.
Score three outcomes
- Quality: Did the response satisfy every requirement, produce correct reasoning or code, and complete the required tool sequence?
- Latency: How long did users or downstream systems wait for a usable answer?
- Token cost: What did the request consume under your pricing plan, including thinking tokens when thinking was enabled?
Make the decision per task class
A single global level can be convenient, but it may be inefficient. If low performs well for drafting and medium is needed for debugging, route those task classes separately. Keep the policy understandable: document the default, the trigger for escalation, and the maximum level allowed for latency-sensitive paths.

Error after sending minimal
First confirm the model identifier. On Gemini 3.8 Flash, minimal is unsupported. Replace it with low, medium, or high according to the task, and validate the value against the current model table.
Best Value
Unexpectedly slow or expensive responses
Check whether the request is using high unnecessarily and whether thinking tokens are included in output pricing. Compare the same representative prompts at medium and low. If medium preserves the required quality, make it the task’s production setting and reserve high for escalations.
Truncated, incomplete, or empty output
Inspect max_output_tokens. Because the cap includes thinking and visible output, a request can exhaust the allowance while still reasoning. Increase the cap when your budget permits, or lower the thinking level to low or medium as Google recommends for avoiding a hard cutoff. Do not treat a larger cap as a way to force the model to reason less.
Different behavior after a model upgrade
Recheck the new model’s default and supported levels. Defaults are not shared across the Gemini family; for example, Gemini 2.5 Flash-Lite is documented with thinking off by default, whereas Gemini 3.8 Flash defaults to medium.

Quality does not improve after moving to high
Verify that the task actually needs more reasoning. High cannot repair missing context, ambiguous requirements, invalid tool schemas, or incorrect source data. Improve those inputs, then compare levels again using the same evaluation sample.
A practical policy you can document
For a Gemini 3.8 Flash application, a concise policy might be:
- Use medium as the default for user-facing and agentic requests.
- Route interactive, latency-critical paths to low after checking quality on representative prompts.
- Allow high for mathematics, difficult coding, deep reasoning, and multi-step orchestration.
- Reject or remap minimal because 3.8 Flash does not support it.
- Review the output-token cap whenever a request can produce long reasoning or a long answer.
- Revalidate the policy whenever the model identifier or Google’s supported-level table changes.
This policy keeps the level tied to an observable requirement—speed, balanced quality, or reasoning depth—rather than treating the setting as a permanent quality score.
Bottom line for Gemini 3.8 Flash
Start at medium. Move to low when a quick, checkable answer matters more than additional deliberation; move to high when the task demands deep reasoning, difficult mathematics or coding, or coordinated multi-step tools. Check the model’s own documentation before applying the same rule elsewhere, and remember that max_output_tokens limits thinking plus visible output rather than reducing thinking effort.
