The right gaming TV is not simply the one with the biggest “120” on its box. Match the television’s actual HDMI input capabilities to your console or PC, then confirm that your games can output the resolution, refresh rate and variable-refresh signal you want. For a modern setup, check five things on the exact model: 4K resolution at 120Hz on the intended input, VRR support and range, ALLM, current firmware, and a signal path that includes a suitable cable and no limiting receiver or soundbar.
A 120Hz panel can make supported games look and feel smoother than 60Hz, while VRR keeps the display’s timing aligned with a game whose frame delivery changes from moment to moment. HDMI 2.1 branding can help identify the relevant generation of features, but the label alone does not tell you which port supports 4K120 or VRR. Use the model’s specification sheet and manual to verify the port you will actually use.

Start with the signal your console or PC can deliver
A television can refresh at 120Hz without receiving a 120Hz game signal. The source, game, cable, intermediary equipment and selected TV input mode all have to accept the same format. Sony documents 4K at 120Hz video output for the PlayStation 5, but its guidance also refers to 120Hz output for games that support it. That means 4K120 is a capability, not a promise that every title renders 120 frames per second.

Think of the connection as a chain:
- Source: your console or PC must generate the chosen resolution and refresh rate.
- Game: the title must offer a suitable performance mode or frame-rate output.
- Cable: it must carry the required bandwidth reliably.
- Intermediary devices: an AV receiver, switch or soundbar can restrict the signal if its inputs do not support the same format.
- TV input: the specific HDMI port must accept the resolution, refresh rate and gaming features.
- TV settings and firmware: a port may require an enhanced-format setting or a software update.
Checking the whole chain prevents a common mistake: buying a television advertised as “120Hz” and discovering that the port used by the console accepts only 4K at 60Hz.

What refresh rate means for gaming
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), is how often the display can update its image. A 60Hz display can present up to 60 refreshes per second; a 120Hz display can present up to 120. Higher refresh capability can reduce the time between updates and make camera movement or aiming appear more fluid, but only when the source and game provide compatible frames.
| Display capability | What it can accept or show | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| 60Hz | Up to 60 refreshes per second, subject to the input format | That every game runs at 60 frames per second or that motion is free of judder |
| 120Hz | Up to 120 refreshes per second when the input and source support that mode | That a game renders at 120 frames per second, or that every HDMI port accepts 4K120 |
| “120” motion-processing claim | May describe internal processing or interpolation | Native 120Hz input support for a console or PC |
HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies 4K120 as a high-resolution, high-refresh capability. Sony’s PS5 support documentation likewise lists 4K120 output, but the console must be connected to a compatible TV input and the game must expose a mode that uses it. When comparing products, look for wording such as “4K 120Hz input” or a detailed supported-format table, not only a marketing phrase about motion enhancement.
Resolution and refresh rate are separate checks
A set might accept 4K at 60Hz and 1080p at 120Hz, for example. Those are different modes. The specification you need is the combination your system will use: typically 3840×2160 (4K) at 120Hz for a current console or gaming PC. Confirm whether that combination is available on the particular HDMI port, and whether features such as HDR remain available at the same time.

Games do not always deliver frames at a perfectly steady interval. Rendering time changes with scene complexity, resolution, effects and the performance available from the GPU. With a fixed-refresh display, a new frame may arrive while the screen is partway through a refresh, producing tearing, or a frame may be repeated while the display waits, producing judder.

Variable refresh rate (VRR) allows the display to vary its refresh timing to follow the source’s frame delivery. HDMI Licensing Administrator explains: “VRR enables a gaming source such as a console or computer to deliver video frames as fast as it can, which in many cases is slower than the normal static refresh rate.” Read the full technical explanation at HDMI’s VRR overview.
In practical terms, VRR can make an uneven frame stream look more coherent and can reduce tearing without forcing the game to wait for a fixed 60Hz or 120Hz schedule. It does not create extra GPU performance, lock a game to a particular frame rate, or remove every form of stutter. The source and display must both support VRR, and the result depends on the television’s supported VRR range and the game. Sony states that PS5 can synchronize its display refresh rate to console output on HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and monitors, while cautioning that results vary by TV and game.
What to verify about a TV’s VRR implementation
- Supported input: identify which HDMI port accepts VRR; do not assume all ports do.
- Supported range: use the manufacturer’s documented minimum and maximum refresh rates when available.
- Resolution combinations: check whether VRR works at 4K120, 4K60 and the resolutions your PC uses.
- Console compatibility: confirm the console’s VRR requirements and the TV’s stated support.
- Firmware: install current TV and source updates before diagnosing a missing VRR option.
HDMI 2.1: useful context, not a complete checklist
HDMI version labels describe a specification family, but they do not enumerate the features enabled on every product port. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s current overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification update and separately describes HDMI 2.1b gaming features including VRR, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT). A television can therefore carry an HDMI 2.1 label while offering different capabilities on different inputs.
For a purchase, replace the question “Does it have HDMI 2.1?” with “Does the HDMI input I will use support my exact signal?” Look for the manufacturer’s table of supported resolutions and refresh rates, the port number associated with 4K120, and separate entries for VRR and ALLM.

| Feature or label | What it does | What you still need to check |
|---|---|---|
| 4K120 | Allows a 4K signal at up to 120Hz when source and game support it | Exact HDMI port, simultaneous HDR support, cable and intermediary equipment |
| VRR | Adjusts display timing to follow variable frame delivery | Supported range, resolution limits, console/PC compatibility and firmware |
| ALLM | Lets a console or PC signal a compatible TV to switch to a low-latency mode automatically | Whether the TV has an appropriate game mode and whether the source sends ALLM |
| QFT | Reduces the time spent transporting active video frames, lowering transport-related display latency | Support throughout the source, cable path and display; it is not a refresh-rate rating |
| “HDMI 2.1” on a product page | Indicates a specification generation associated with modern gaming features | Which features are implemented on which physical input |
ALLM and QFT are different from refresh rate and VRR
ALLM: automatic low-latency mode
ALLM is a signaling feature. A console or PC can tell a compatible display to switch into a low-latency picture mode, often the TV’s game mode, without requiring you to change the picture preset manually. ALLM does not increase refresh rate and does not synchronize frame delivery. If a TV lacks ALLM, you can usually select its game or low-latency mode yourself; the exact behavior and menu name depend on the model.
QFT: shorter transport time
Quick Frame Transport addresses the time a video frame spends being sent across the link. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes it as a way to reduce transport-related display latency. QFT complements a high-refresh and VRR setup, but it cannot compensate for a TV input that does not accept 4K120, nor can it make a game render faster.
How to check a TV before you buy it
Use this process for the exact model number and the input you intend to connect. Do not rely on a retailer’s abbreviated feature list when the manufacturer publishes a more detailed manual.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Write down your target signal. For example: 4K at 120Hz with VRR from a current console, or 4K at 120Hz from a PC. Include HDR if you require it.
- Find the official supported-format table. Search the model’s specification sheet or manual for HDMI input resolutions and refresh rates. Confirm that 4K120 is listed as an input mode, not merely as a panel or motion-processing capability.
- Identify the port. Note the HDMI socket number that supports the target format. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking whether the TV claims 4K120 and whether the console is connected to the appropriate HDMI input.
- Check VRR and ALLM separately. Confirm that VRR is available on that port and at your intended resolution. Check whether ALLM is supported by both the source and TV.
- Inspect the signal path. If the console or PC passes through a receiver, switch or soundbar, verify that every device accepts and passes the same resolution, refresh rate, VRR and HDR combination. For a diagnosis, connect the source directly to the TV.
- Check firmware requirements. Install current updates for the TV, console or GPU. A feature listed in a manual may require a later firmware version or a setting that enables enhanced HDMI formats.
- Plan the cable. Start with the cable supplied with the PS5. If a replacement is needed, Sony recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K120. HDMI Licensing Administrator describes the Ultra High Speed cable’s HDMI 2.1 bandwidth capability as up to 48Gbps. Do not replace a working cable merely because the TV has a newer label.
- Save the documentation. Keep a screenshot or copy of the model’s input table. It makes troubleshooting easier if a later software update changes a menu or if you add a receiver.
Setting up a console for 120Hz and VRR
PlayStation 5
On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Set resolution and 120Hz output to automatic where appropriate, then review the VRR option. Sony’s support guidance makes clear that 120Hz output applies to games that support it; seeing a 120Hz-capable TV does not force every game into a 120-frame mode.

Connect the console directly to the HDMI input identified in the TV manual. If the TV has an enhanced, deep-color or HDMI-format toggle, enable the mode required for 4K120 according to that model’s instructions. After changing settings, use the PS5 video-output information screen to confirm the negotiated resolution, refresh rate and VRR status.
Gaming PC
In the operating system’s display settings, select the TV and choose the highest refresh rate that the connected input reports. In the graphics driver control panel, select the TV’s native resolution and an appropriate color format, then enable the driver’s variable-refresh option when supported. Finally, check the game’s own display menu: some titles expose separate quality and performance modes, and the selected mode determines whether the GPU can approach 120 frames per second.
If the PC shows 60Hz only, return to the TV’s input table, cable rating and intermediary devices before changing advanced driver options. A software setting cannot create a 4K120 link that the physical path does not support.
Troubleshooting common failures
The console reports 4K60 instead of 4K120
- Confirm that the TV model claims 4K at 120Hz, not just “120Hz motion.”
- Move the cable to the HDMI port documented for 4K120.
- Connect the console directly to the TV, bypassing a receiver, switch or soundbar.
- Install TV and console firmware updates.
- Use the supplied console cable first. If the problem remains, test a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K120.
- Check the TV’s enhanced HDMI-format setting and the console’s video-output information screen.
VRR is missing or greyed out
- Verify that VRR is listed for the exact input and resolution you selected.
- Enable VRR on both the source and TV; ALLM alone does not enable VRR.
- Update firmware and restart the source after changing the TV setting.
- Remove intermediary equipment temporarily.
- Check the game’s support and display mode. VRR availability can vary by title.
The picture flickers, blanks or drops out
Intermittent failures usually indicate a marginal link or an unsupported combination. Reduce variables by connecting directly to the TV, reseating both ends of the cable, selecting the documented HDMI port and temporarily testing 4K60. If 4K60 is stable but 4K120 is not, recheck the cable rating and every device between source and display. A replacement cable is a troubleshooting step, not an automatic upgrade requirement.

ALLM does not switch picture modes
Confirm that the TV’s automatic low-latency option is enabled and that the source sends ALLM. Some TVs let you remain in a manually selected game mode even when ALLM is unavailable. This affects automatic mode selection, not the panel’s maximum refresh rate or VRR capability.
How to compare two gaming TVs
When product-level specifications are available, compare the same input and signal rather than comparing headline labels. Use this worksheet:
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and refresh | Does the intended HDMI port accept 4K120, and at what other formats? | Determines whether the source can use its high-refresh mode at native resolution |
| VRR | Is VRR supported, over what documented range and at which resolutions? | Determines how variable frame delivery will be handled |
| ALLM | Does the TV switch to a low-latency mode automatically? | Reduces manual picture-mode changes but does not raise frame rate |
| Source compatibility | Are your console or PC output modes listed as supported? | A capable TV cannot fix an unsupported source mode |
| Signal chain | Will the cable, receiver, switch and soundbar pass the same signal? | The weakest device can limit the complete connection |
| Firmware and settings | Are updates or an enhanced HDMI setting required? | Features may be unavailable until software and input options are configured |
Do not infer brightness, contrast, response time, measured input lag, panel technology, port count or value from the refresh-rate and HDMI information above. Those are model-specific properties that require separate specifications or testing.
A practical buying decision
Choose a 4K120-capable input when
Your console or PC supports 4K120, you play titles with a 120Hz performance mode, and you want the option to use that mode without downscaling. Verify the exact port, cable and intermediary equipment before purchase.
Choose a strong 4K60 setup when
Your source or the games you play do not offer 120Hz modes, or your budget and equipment make 4K120 unnecessary. VRR can still be valuable at lower refresh rates if both source and TV support it, because it addresses uneven frame delivery rather than creating a higher frame rate.
Prioritize VRR when frame pacing varies
VRR is most useful when a game’s frame output moves around instead of staying at a fixed refresh interval. Confirm the TV’s supported range and the console or PC’s compatibility; do not treat a generic “gaming” label as proof that VRR works at your chosen resolution.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Refresh rate describes the display’s update capability; it does not guarantee a game’s frame rate.
- VRR synchronizes display timing with variable frame delivery and can reduce tearing and judder, but results depend on the TV, source and game.
- ALLM automates low-latency-mode selection, while QFT reduces video-transport time. Neither replaces checking the input format.
- HDMI 2.1 branding is not a port-by-port compatibility guarantee. Verify the exact HDMI socket and supported signal table.
- For 4K120 troubleshooting, check the TV claim, input, firmware, cable and intermediary equipment before buying accessories.
