How to choose a gaming TV for GTA 6: refresh rate, input lag, HDMI 2.1 and HDR

Choose a 4K television that explicitly supports 120Hz, VRR and low-latency Game Mode, with enough HDMI inputs that actually provide those features. Then verify measured input lag and HDR performance for the exact model. Those specifications match the capabilities of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but they do not prove that Grand Theft Auto VI will render at 4K, 120 frames per second, or any particular HDR or VRR mode.

Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date announced on August 6, 2026. Rockstar’s platform information does not state the game’s resolution, frame rate, HDR format or VRR behavior, so buy for verified console compatibility rather than an assumed GTA VI performance target.

What is confirmed about GTA VI and TV support?

Rockstar’s support information, updated August 18, 2026, lists GTA VI as available to pre-order on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s August 6, 2026 Newswire announcement gives November 19, 2026 as the release date.

Those announcements identify the platforms, not the display modes. They do not confirm whether GTA VI will offer a 4K mode, a 120-frame-per-second mode, a specific HDR format, or VRR support. A television capable of 4K/120Hz can accept that signal when a console and game provide it; it cannot make a game render at that rate.

The buying implication

  • Treat 4K/120Hz as a console capability and a way to preserve options for compatible games, not as a promised GTA VI setting.
  • Look for VRR, ALLM or a clearly documented low-latency Game Mode, because these features affect responsiveness and motion when the game and console support them.
  • Judge HDR by measured picture performance, not by the presence of an HDR logo.
  • Check the exact HDMI sockets and their settings. A television can carry an HDMI 2.1 label while only some ports support 4K/120Hz or VRR.

The core specifications to compare

Feature What the console documentation establishes What to verify on the TV Important limitation
4K/120Hz PlayStation 5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz output. Xbox Series X can output up to 120 frames per second when the content and display support it. 4K resolution at 120Hz on the specific input you will use; confirm the setting in the manual. A 120Hz panel does not make GTA VI run at 120 frames per second.
VRR PlayStation describes VRR as synchronizing the display refresh rate with PS5 output in compatible games. The exact VRR range, supported input, and compatibility with your console. Results vary by television and game; VRR is not a cure for every stutter or artifact.
ALLM The HDMI Forum describes Auto Low Latency Mode as automatically selecting an ideal low-latency setting. ALLM behavior and whether Game Mode remains available for manual selection. ALLM is a switching feature, not a published millisecond input-lag measurement.
HDR Xbox setup tools can report whether the connected display supports HDR. Independent measurements of brightness, contrast, tone mapping and HDR image quality for the exact model. HDR compatibility alone does not guarantee a bright or accurate HDR picture.
HDMI inputs Sony advises using the input labeled for 4K/120Hz or VRR and checking the television’s settings. How many physical ports support all required features after other devices are connected. Generic “HDMI 2.1” wording may not apply to every socket.

Refresh rate and resolution: what 4K/120Hz really buys you

A 4K/120Hz specification means the panel can refresh at up to 120Hz while accepting a 4K signal, provided the input, cable, console and content all support that combination. It is the relevant headline specification for a buyer who wants the higher-refresh option available from current consoles.

It is not a GTA VI performance guarantee. The game’s engine determines its internal rendering resolution and frame rate, and Rockstar has not published those details in the cited announcements. The console may also use dynamic resolution or different graphics modes; do not infer a mode from the television’s maximum refresh rate.

Series X and Series S are different targets

Xbox describes Series X as displaying games in native 4K, while Series S is designed for 1440p with upscaling to 4K. That makes a 4K/120Hz TV a sensible shared display for an Xbox household, but you should not treat Series S and Series X as identical output targets. The television can accept an upscaled 4K signal from Series S without changing the console’s internal rendering resolution.

When 60Hz can still be sufficient

A 60Hz television can display console games, but it removes the higher-refresh option that the current platforms support. If you are certain that your console library and future use will remain at 60Hz, that trade-off may be acceptable. For a TV being purchased specifically for a long-lived console setup around GTA VI, an explicitly documented 4K/120Hz input keeps more options open.

VRR: useful, conditional and model-specific

Variable refresh rate lets a compatible television adjust its refresh timing to the console’s output within the supported range. In a game that fluctuates below a fixed refresh target, synchronization can reduce tearing and make uneven frame delivery appear smoother.

Compatibility is conditional. Sony notes that VRR results vary by TV and game, so check the exact television’s supported VRR implementation and range rather than relying on a logo. Confirm that the port connected to the PS5 or Xbox supports VRR at the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.

Questions to ask in a specification sheet or review

  • Does VRR work on the 4K input you will use?
  • What refresh-rate range is documented?
  • Does enabling VRR limit resolution, HDR, or other features?
  • Does the independent review test VRR behavior with a console, or only with a computer?

Do not buy a TV on the promise that VRR will eliminate every hitch. It cannot compensate for a game’s own frame-time problems, a signal-path limitation, or a display operating outside its supported range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Input lag and ALLM: compare measurements, not labels

Input lag is the delay between a controller action and the corresponding change on screen. For a fair comparison, use independent measurements made on the exact model, in Game Mode, at the resolution and refresh rate you will actually use. A result measured at 1080p/60Hz is not automatically representative of 4K/120Hz operation.

No universal millisecond cutoff is established here, and no comparable set of current-model measurements is available from the cited material. Do not copy a number from another size, regional variant, firmware version or picture mode.

What ALLM does

Auto Low Latency Mode allows a compatible console to ask the TV to select its low-latency setting automatically. The HDMI Forum describes it as enabling the ideal latency setting to be selected automatically for smoother interaction. In practice, it is a convenience and a way to avoid accidentally leaving image processing enabled; it is not itself a latency test and does not mean that all delay disappears.

How to evaluate a review’s lag table

  1. Confirm the tested model number and screen size. Manufacturers sometimes use one series name for panels with different behavior.
  2. Check the tested picture mode. Game Mode usually disables processing that adds delay.
  3. Check the input signal: 4K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz results can differ.
  4. Check whether HDR was enabled. HDR Game Mode can have a different processing path.
  5. Prefer results from a repeatable instrument-based test, and compare models measured by the same outlet when possible.

HDMI 2.1: verify the ports, not the marketing term

HDMI 2.1 is relevant because 4K/120Hz and console VRR require features associated with the newer HDMI specification. The label alone is insufficient, however. Some TVs provide the full feature set on two ports, others on more or fewer, and some require an “enhanced,” “4K,” or similar input setting before the higher-bandwidth mode works.

Port-count planning

Count the sockets that support 4K/120Hz and VRR, then subtract the ports needed for other devices such as a second console or a receiver. If only one suitable socket remains, moving devices later may require changing cables or settings. The number printed on the box is less useful than the manual’s port table.

Settings to inspect

  • Port labels identifying 4K/120Hz, gaming, or VRR support.
  • Enhanced-format or high-bandwidth toggles that must be enabled per input.
  • Whether eARC shares a port that you planned to use for a console.
  • Whether all HDMI features remain available when HDR and VRR are enabled together.

Cables and the signal path

Sony says the cable included with the PS5 can be used for 4K/120Hz, as can an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. You need a replacement, a second cable or a longer run only when the supplied cable does not meet your installation needs.

Connect the console directly to the television while testing. An older receiver, switch or soundbar can become the limiting link even when both the console and TV support the desired mode. Once the direct connection works, add intermediary equipment and verify the signal again.

HDR: compatibility is only the first check

HDR expands the range of brightness and color information a display can reproduce, but an HDR logo says little about the quality of the result. A TV can accept an HDR signal yet produce weak highlights, crushed shadow detail or inaccurate tone mapping.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The cited platform guidance supports checking whether the console and TV report compatible HDR. It does not provide comparative measurements of brightness, contrast, tone mapping or HDR picture quality for candidate televisions. Use an independent review of the exact model for those decisions.

A practical TV-selection workflow

  1. Choose the console target. For PS5 or Series X, start with 4K/120Hz. If you use Series S, remember that Xbox positions it around 1440p with 4K upscaling.
  2. Filter by real port capability. Read the manual or a detailed specification table and identify the sockets that support 4K/120Hz, VRR and HDR together.
  3. Check low-latency behavior. Confirm Game Mode and ALLM support, then find independent input-lag measurements for the exact model, mode and signal.
  4. Evaluate HDR quality. Use measured brightness, contrast and tone-mapping results rather than compatibility badges.
  5. Count remaining ports. Include every console, receiver, soundbar and streaming device you plan to connect.
  6. Check firmware history. A manufacturer update can change compatibility or picture behavior, so note the firmware used by the review.
  7. Confirm the return path. If a retailer’s policy allows returns, test the actual unit with your console; panel variation and regional model differences can matter.

Connect and verify a PS5

  1. Connect the PS5 directly to the TV input labeled for 4K/120Hz or VRR.
  2. Use the included console cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
  3. Update the TV firmware and console software before judging compatibility.
  4. In the TV menu, enable the input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth format if required.
  5. Open the PS5 display settings and select the available 4K and 120Hz options appropriate to your setup.
  6. Enable VRR only after confirming the TV supports it on that input. Test with a compatible game; behavior is game-dependent.
  7. If the picture drops out, temporarily disable VRR or 120Hz and test the cable, port and settings one at a time.

Connect and verify an Xbox Series X or Series S

  1. Connect the Xbox directly to the TV’s documented 4K/120Hz input.
  2. Enable the television’s enhanced HDMI format if the manual requires it.
  3. Open the Xbox display settings and inspect the TV details or compatibility screen for 4K and HDR capabilities.
  4. Set the desired refresh rate only after the compatibility screen confirms that the signal path supports it.
  5. Check VRR and ALLM settings on both devices, then test a compatible title.
  6. If Xbox reports a missing capability, test another HDMI port, the supplied or Ultra High Speed cable, direct connection and current firmware before replacing the TV.

Troubleshooting common failures

The console only offers 60Hz

Verify that the console is connected to the correct HDMI socket, that the TV’s enhanced format is enabled, and that the cable and any intermediary device support the required bandwidth. Check for firmware updates. If another port works, the original socket may not support 4K/120Hz despite the television’s general HDMI 2.1 branding.

VRR is unavailable or unstable

Confirm VRR support for that exact input and resolution, update both devices, and test a direct connection. Use the TV’s documented VRR range; output outside that range can produce behavior that looks like a fault. If the problem appears only in one game, the title may not support the same VRR behavior as another game.

HDR looks dim or washed out

First confirm that the console reports HDR and that the TV is in its HDR Game Mode. Then check the review data for the model’s brightness and tone mapping. HDR compatibility does not guarantee strong HDR performance, so changing cables will not fix a display limitation.

Controls feel delayed

Activate Game Mode or verify that ALLM switched it on. Turn off unnecessary motion smoothing and image processing, then compare an independent lag measurement made at your chosen signal. Do not treat ALLM as proof of a particular latency figure.

The final buying checklist

  • GTA VI platform: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Release context: November 19, 2026 announced by Rockstar; game-specific display modes remain unannounced in the cited material.
  • Panel/input: explicitly documented 4K/120Hz on the port you will use.
  • Gaming features: compatible VRR and ALLM or a clearly documented low-latency Game Mode.
  • Evidence: exact-model input-lag measurements at the relevant resolution and refresh rate.
  • HDR: independent measurements of brightness, contrast and tone mapping, not merely an HDR badge.
  • Connectivity: enough qualifying HDMI ports after all other equipment is counted.
  • Signal path: suitable cable, current firmware and no unverified receiver or switch between console and TV.
  • Console check: use the PS5 or Xbox compatibility screens after installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What TV do I need for GTA 6?

No GTA VI-specific TV mode has been announced. For a PS5 or Xbox Series X setup, prioritize a 4K/120Hz input, VRR, low-latency Game Mode or ALLM, HDR support, and independent measurements for the exact model.

Do I need HDMI 2.1 for GTA 6?

Not necessarily for every possible GTA VI mode, because Rockstar has not published the game’s output requirements. HDMI 2.1-related 4K/120Hz and VRR features are useful console capabilities, but verify the exact port rather than relying on the label alone.
