Check each game’s current device requirements first, then compare compatible phones for sustained performance, heat, storage, battery life, display and controls. A high-refresh-rate screen or a powerful-sounding chip alone does not guarantee that a game will run at your desired frame rate.
Start with your games and the experience you want
Before comparing phones, make a short list of the games you care about. For each one, note the graphics settings you expect to use, your desired frame rate, how long a typical session lasts and whether you play competitively or casually. These details matter more than the broad label “gaming phone”: a puzzle game and a demanding 3D game place very different demands on a device.

- Casual and puzzle games: Check basic compatibility, storage and comfortable everyday use. Paying extra for a gaming-focused phone may not help if your games do not need sustained high performance.
- Competitive online games: Check the game’s selectable frame rates and any device-specific support list. Touch response, grip, display readability and stable performance over a full session may matter more than a headline refresh-rate figure.
- Demanding 3D games: Start with the publisher’s current recommended specifications, then look for transparent long-session evidence for the phone at relevant settings. Consider heat, battery use and the space needed for the game and updates.
Set a budget and account for the phone’s everyday needs too, such as software support, camera quality and size. A gaming-focused model is not automatically the best all-purpose choice.
Check official requirements for each game
Game support is title-specific, and publishers update requirements and supported-device lists. Distinguish a minimum requirement from a recommended specification—and both from a special list that enables a higher frame rate. Meeting a minimum does not promise your preferred graphics quality or FPS.

Example: Genshin Impact
HoYoverse’s 2025 requirements list a recommended Android level of Snapdragon 855, Dimensity 1000 or Kirin 980 and above, at least 6 GB of RAM, Android 12 or above, and 60 GB of available storage. The page lists 40 GB as supported storage and warns that requirements may increase with future updates. These are requirements for Genshin Impact, not universal thresholds for gaming phones. Check the current HoYoverse requirements page before buying.
Example: EA SPORTS FC Mobile
EA says most devices support 60 FPS, while selected devices support 90–120 FPS. It also warns that FPS and device support can change; low battery or power-saving mode may prevent higher FPS. Check the current FC Mobile device requirements and support list for the exact game and device.

Riot’s minimum device requirements, updated 2025-11-24 and starting with Patch 7.0, are minimums. Do not treat them as a promise of high graphics settings or high FPS.
Repeat this check for every important game, and do it close to purchase time: requirements and supported-device lists can change.

Match the screen to the game’s actual frame rate
Screen refresh rate and game frame rate are different. A 120 Hz display can refresh up to 120 times per second, but a game may be capped at a lower rate, may not offer a higher-FPS mode on that device, or may not sustain its selected rate.
Android Developers says games commonly target 30 or 60 frames per second. Its guidance notes that when a display refresh rate exceeds the game’s target frame rate, the higher refresh rate brings no benefit to that game and can increase power consumption. Check the game’s FPS options and device-specific support, not just the phone’s display specification. Android Developers’ power-efficiency guidance explains the distinction.

Look for sustained performance, not just peak specifications
Long sessions can expose limits that a brief benchmark does not. CPU and GPU heat can reduce efficiency; Android Developers notes that an overheated device may downclock those components to cool down, affecting performance and battery use.
When comparing phones, look for independent long-session tests that identify the phone, game, graphics settings, test duration and, where available, temperatures. A result from a different game or a short run may not predict your own experience. Lenovo’s gaming-phone buying guide also emphasizes sustained load and the limits of brief benchmark runs. Do not choose on a chipset name or peak score alone.

Account for storage, memory and battery
- Storage: Compare the game’s current space requirement with the free space you will have after the operating system and other apps are installed. Leave room for updates; HoYoverse warns that Genshin Impact’s storage needs may rise.
- Memory: Check the game’s stated requirements and consider how often you switch between games and other apps. Memory can affect whether apps stay available or need to reload, but there is no single RAM target established here for every title.
- Battery and power modes: Demanding games and higher refresh rates draw power. Power-saving modes or a low battery can also limit high-FPS play in some games, including FC Mobile. Look for relevant play-time evidence rather than assuming a larger battery guarantees longer gaming sessions.
Compare comfort, controls and overall value
For long or competitive sessions, consider grip and size, touch response, screen readability and speakers alongside performance. A phone gaming controller is optional: check that both the handset and the game support the controller and its input method. A clip-on cooler is also optional; heat can affect performance, but the sources cited here do not establish that a particular cooler improves it.
Finally, weigh gaming against daily use and local price. No universal chipset cutoff or head-to-head phone test across these games is established here, and prices, regional configurations and availability vary. Compare specific models only after checking their exact configuration and the current game requirements.
