Choose a gaming monitor by matching the resolution and refresh rate you want to use, then verify that the specific monitor input supports that combination and the features your platform needs. Also weigh variable refresh rate (VRR), screen size, viewing distance, desk space, and price. A console’s maximum output is a capability—not a promise that every game runs at that resolution or frame rate.
Start with the platform and how you will use the monitor
Decide which system matters most and whether the display will also serve another console or a PC. Shared use makes input-by-input checks important: a monitor’s headline specifications do not necessarily describe what every port can do.

For PC, start with the graphics hardware and games you expect to run. Compare their likely performance with the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate; the display’s maximum refresh rate is not a guarantee that your PC will reach it.
Choose resolution and refresh rate together
Resolution describes the number of pixels the display can show; refresh rate describes how often it can update each second. Decide which resolution and refresh rate you want at the same time, then confirm that the monitor supports that combination on the input you will use. A model’s maximum refresh rate may apply only at a particular resolution or connection.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- 4K at 120 Hz: A possible target for PS5 or Xbox Series X, but check support across the console, monitor input, cable, and settings.
- 1440p at up to 120 Hz: A possible PS5 target with a compatible display. On Switch 2, Nintendo lists 120 fps output when 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 is selected in TV mode.
- For PC: Match the monitor to the performance you expect from your graphics hardware and games, rather than buying on the basis of the monitor’s maximum alone.
These are platform output capabilities, not assurances that every game renders at the selected resolution or frame rate. Nintendo notes that frame rate differs from game to game.
Check what each platform supports
PS5
Sony says PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K 120 Hz video output. The compatible monitor, HDMI port, cable, and settings all matter; Sony’s 4K resolution guide recommends checking each if 4K at 120 Hz is not working.

- 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
- 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
- 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
PS5 also supports 1440p output on compatible monitors and TVs. Sony specifies support for 1440p at 60 Hz, or at 60 Hz and 120 Hz depending on the display. PS5 VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh rate with console output on compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR displays, but results vary by display and game. Check Sony’s PS5 feature details for the relevant display requirements.
Xbox Series X
Microsoft lists True 4K gaming resolution, a performance target of up to 120 FPS, one HDMI 2.1 port, HDMI VRR, AMD FreeSync, and Auto Low Latency Mode for Xbox Series X. These describe console capabilities, not performance guarantees for every game. Compare the monitor’s input and feature support with the modes you intend to use. See Microsoft’s Xbox Series X specifications.

Nintendo Switch 2 in docked mode
Nintendo lists a maximum TV output of 3840×2160 at 60 fps, or 120 fps when 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 is selected. TV output uses HDMI and supports HDR10. Nintendo says TV-mode VRR was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. VRR, HDR, and 4K depend on compatible displays and supported games. Check the Switch 2 technical specifications and Nintendo’s FAQ for details.
PC
There is no single resolution or refresh rate that suits every PC. The right match depends on the graphics hardware and games you plan to use, as well as adaptive-sync compatibility, monitor size, and price. Confirm that the monitor supports the desired modes over the connection you will use.

Verify VRR and the actual input features
VRR can synchronize a display’s refresh rate with the output from a compatible console or PC. Do not treat a port label or a broad HDMI specification as proof that the exact feature and mode you need will work. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the individual input, resolution-and-refresh-rate combinations, and VRR or adaptive-sync support; then confirm compatibility with your platform.
Recommended Free Tools
If you plan to share one monitor across systems, check each input separately. A monitor may have different limits or feature support from one port to another, so make sure the cable and port you intend to use can deliver your chosen mode.

Choose a practical size for your space
Screen size is a matter of fit, not a universal ranking. Consider how far you sit from the display, how much desk space you have, and whether you will use it at a desk or farther away. The sources cited here do not establish one best size or price tier, so compare models against your own space and budget.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before buying
- Name your primary platform. If you will share the display, list every console or PC and the connection each will use.
- Choose a target resolution and refresh rate. Check that the monitor supports both together on the specific input, not just separately in its headline specifications.
- Verify VRR or adaptive-sync needs. Confirm support for your platform and the connection you plan to use.
- Check the rest of the signal path. For a console mode such as 4K at 120 Hz, confirm the console settings, cable, and monitor port can all support it.
- Assess physical fit and cost. Match screen size to viewing distance and desk space, then compare the price of models that meet your requirements.
- Check the exact model specification. Before choosing a particular monitor, review its current specifications and independent testing; platform compatibility alone does not establish that a specific model is suitable.
