Measure the room before comparing desks
Mark the proposed desk footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or on a room plan. Include the widest points of the assembled desk—legs, side shelves, and other projections—as well as room for the chair to move and for doors, drawers, and nearby storage to open.

Measure the equipment that needs to fit: monitor and stand (or the reach of a monitor arm), keyboard, mouse movement area, tower width, height and depth, and access to the PC’s ports. A desk can have ample advertised width but still feel cramped if it lacks depth or if a shelf blocks your case.
IKEA’s UAE desk guide suggests 100 cm as a general minimum desk width and 60 cm as a general minimum depth, with about 60 cm wide by 45 cm deep for legroom. Choose depth for the screen and controls
Depth determines whether you can place the monitor comfortably while keeping the keyboard and mouse within reach. OSHA’s purchasing guide says the desk should allow the monitor to be at least 20 inches from your eyes and leave space for a monitor, keyboard, and pointing device. OSHA’s monitor guidance gives a generally preferred viewing distance of 20 to 40 inches (50 to 100 cm) from eye to screen; the useful distance can vary with your vision, text size, and setup. If your screen cannot sit at a comfortable distance, OSHA suggests options such as moving the desk away from the wall, using a flat-panel display, placing the desk in a corner to gain depth, or using an adjustable keyboard tray. These are ways to address a cramped layout; confirm that any tray or monitor support fits your desk and equipment.

Check height, legroom, and monitor position together
Treat the desk, chair, and monitor as one workstation. OSHA recommends a keyboard position around elbow height and gives an adjustable keyboard-height range of 22 to 30 inches for seated tasks. Its monitor guidance recommends placing the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, with the center normally 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level. Adapt these recommendations to your posture, chair height, vision, and equipment rather than assuming a particular desk will prevent discomfort. OSHA’s desk purchasing guide · OSHA’s monitor guidance

Choose storage that fits the equipment you own
Built-in storage can free the main surface, but fixed shelves and holders only help when their clearances match your gear. Check the product’s stated dimensions and compare them with your own measurements before buying.
- Monitor shelf: Check shelf height and width against the monitor’s feet or mount position. A raised screen can free desk space, but a shelf may limit monitor size or placement.
- PC tower shelf or holder: Compare the opening with the tower’s height, width, and depth. Allow for ventilation and access to top and front ports; do not rely on a general product label such as “PC storage.”
- Side shelves and hooks: These can keep small peripherals close by. Include their projection in your room measurements and check that they do not obstruct the chair or circulation.
- Separate drawer unit or shelf: A separate piece can make the layout more flexible, but count its floor footprint and consider whether it blocks legroom.
- Under-desk cable routing: A tray, net, or grommet can organize cords. Plan the outlet location, cord reach, and access before placing the desk against a wall.
For example, IKEA’s FREDDE listing describes an adjustable, removable monitor shelf intended to make room for a 32-inch monitor or TV, small shelves that can hang inside or outside its side panels, and a CPU shelf. One customer review on that page reports CPU-shelf clearance of 18.5 inches high by 18.8 inches deep and says some cases are larger. Compare footprint, surface, storage, and total cost
Evaluate each desk against the same practical checks. A low desk price may not be the lowest complete-setup cost if it requires a separate drawer unit, cable accessories, delivery, or assembly.
