Then compare the remaining candidates against the same published criteria, explain who is making the decision, and show why the winner best meets the standard. A prominent game’s absence should narrow the field—not decide the result by itself.
Start with the award’s rules—not a universal GOTY rule
There is no single eligibility rule shared by every Game of the Year award. Name the award and edition, then check its official rules or announcement before calling a release ineligible. A game might be formally excluded, released after a cutoff, eligible but overlooked, or absent from the shortlist; those are different situations and should not be conflated.

The distinctions can be substantial. For BAFTA’s 2027 Games Awards, a game must have been or be due to be released in the UK between 15 November 2025 and 19 November 2026. BAFTA’s rules generally exclude remasters; remakes are ineligible for Best Game and British Game; and DLC is not treated as a new game for Best Game. The Best Game category is defined as “the best game of the year, across all genres,” and remakes, DLC, and Evolving Game entries are excluded from its automatically considered pool. The Game Awards’ 2025 FAQ, for example, set a public-availability cutoff of Friday, November 21, 2025 at 9pm PT. It also says games released in previous years can qualify in all categories when the jury considers their new content, improvements, or service updates meritorious. That is a rule for the 2025 edition, not a general rule for every year or award. The Game Awards FAQ

Eligibility can also depend on category. BAFTA says games released before its 2027 eligibility window may qualify for Evolving Game if they receive regular content updates and have a substantial future roadmap. A release that cannot enter one category therefore is not automatically excluded from every category. BAFTA Games Awards information
Verify what “ineligible” means
Before debating who should win, establish the status of the prominent release. Use the award organizer’s rules or announcement, and describe the situation precisely:
- Formally ineligible: The release does not meet the award’s published rules for the named edition or category.
- Too late for consideration: It missed that edition’s submission or public-availability cutoff. Do not imply it was rejected on merit.
- Eligible but not shortlisted: It was in the potential pool but did not advance. That is a selection outcome, not an eligibility exclusion.
- Not considered for another stated reason: Identify the organizer’s explanation rather than speculating.
The title alone cannot establish which case applies. If the award edition and game have not been identified, avoid making a case-specific claim about why it is absent.

Define the eligible field before choosing
Once the rules are clear, list the candidates that actually qualify for the award and category. This prevents the excluded release from quietly becoming the standard by which every remaining game is judged. Its absence may change the pool; it does not, on its own, make any particular alternative the winner.
Keep the boundary visible in the final explanation: say which award and edition you are discussing, what category is being judged, and how the eligible candidates were identified. If the award publishes a shortlist, distinguish that shortlist from the full eligible pool.
Choose criteria that make the decision legible
Use the award’s official rubric when it provides one. If it does not, state your own criteria and apply them consistently to every candidate. BAFTA’s published standard is that members should play games in contention, apply their expertise, and decide on “the single criteria of Excellence.” The criteria below are a practical way to make a broad standard understandable; they are not a claim that every award body uses this exact rubric. - Craft and execution: How well are the game’s systems, presentation, controls, and pacing realized?
- Originality: Does it introduce distinctive ideas or give familiar ones a fresh and purposeful form?
- Design and play experience: Do mechanics, levels, progression, and player choices work together effectively?
- Narrative or emotional impact: Where relevant, how well do story, characters, tone, or atmosphere achieve their aims?
- Technical quality: How reliably and effectively does the game run and present itself on the platforms being judged?
- Success on its own terms: Does it deliver what it sets out to do, rather than being rewarded simply for scale, popularity, or genre?
These dimensions need not carry identical weight. If one matters more to your decision, say so and explain why. Do not change the weighting from one candidate to another.
Be clear about who is choosing
A GOTY result means different things depending on who votes or deliberates. Describe the actual process rather than implying that one model represents all players or critics.
- Critic or media jury: The Game Awards says its nominations are selected by a voting jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets worldwide. If you are making an editorial pick rather than reporting an award result, say that too. A critic’s choice, committee decision, jury nomination, and public vote are not interchangeable.

Compare the shortlist and explain the tradeoffs
For each serious contender, assess the same criteria. A compact comparison can help readers see where the decision turns; include judgments only when you can support them.

| Technical quality | What is known about reliability and presentation for the versions being considered? |
| Success on its own terms | How convincingly does the game fulfill its stated ambitions? |
Then name the tradeoff that matters most. One candidate may be more formally inventive, another more cohesive; one may excel in storytelling while another makes a stronger case through play design. A useful explanation acknowledges the strongest counterargument to the choice and shows why it does not outweigh the winning game’s advantages under the stated criteria.

A sound winner explanation answers four questions: what award and edition is being judged, which candidates were eligible, what standard was applied, and why the winner came out ahead. When a major release is absent, also state the verified reason—without treating absence as evidence that another game deserves the prize.
This approach does not produce a universal formula for taste. It does make the decision understandable and fair: readers can see the boundaries of the field, the perspective behind the judgment, and the reasoning that separates the winner from other eligible contenders.
