Choose a group Game of the Year by agreeing on eligibility, criteria, finalists, and voting rules before anyone casts a ballot. There is no universal GOTY judging formula: professional awards make different choices, so your result should be presented as your group’s winner under the rules you chose.
How should your gaming group vote on Game of the Year?
Use a process that makes the result understandable and fair to the people taking part. First define which games are eligible; then agree what “best” means to your group, assemble a shortlist members can assess, choose a counting method, and settle abstentions, conflicts, and ties before the vote.

Professional awards offer examples, not a standard your group has to copy. The D.I.C.E. Awards voting rules, the Japan Game Awards 2024 overview, and the Game Developers Choice Awards 2026 rules differ in eligibility, judges, criteria, and the role of public opinion. None establishes one best method for an informal gaming group.
1. Define what counts as eligible
Decide whether your award recognizes games released in a particular period, games your group played for the first time during that period, or any game members nominate. Also settle how you will treat expansions, remakes, early-access releases, and games from earlier years. Make these decisions before nominations so eligibility is not changed to favor a particular title.

Published award rules illustrate why the time window matters. The Game Developers Choice Awards 2026 rules make games released and publicly available to consumers during 2025 eligible, while excluding upgrades, expansions, and mission packs. Japan Game Awards 2024 uses a Japanese-market release period of April 1, 2023, through March 31, 2024, with an exception for a title that became a hot topic in that year. Those are professional-award examples, not required rules for your group.
2. Agree on what “best” means to your group
A group can reward the best overall experience, the most fun members had together, originality, or a balance of qualities. Choose a short list of criteria before comparing the finalists. If you want scores as well as a vote, have everyone use the same rubric for every game rather than changing the standard from one title to another.

Possible comparison axes include:
- Group enjoyment: How much did members enjoy playing or experiencing it together?
- Design and originality: Did its systems or ideas stand out?
- Story and presentation: For games where these matter, how effective were the writing, visuals, and sound?
- Accessibility: Could the people in your group participate comfortably?
- Fit for your group: Did its pace, format, or play style work for the people voting?
These are practical prompts, not a validated scoring scale. They reflect the range of qualities awards may consider: Japan Game Awards 2024 lists design, programming, graphics, sound, and scenario, and also refers to user evaluation. The Game Developers Choice Awards describes its Game of the Year selection as taking account of “the overall quality, impressiveness, and enjoyability of the game.” Your group can adapt those examples to what it values.
3. Build a shortlist members can judge
Ask members to submit nominations independently before discussing them as a group. Combine duplicate nominations, then check each title against the eligibility rules. This gives people a chance to name favorites without an early discussion steering the list.

Before voting, let members flag titles they have not played or do not know well enough to rank. Avoid treating marketing, sales, or outside awards as a substitute for your group’s own experience. Japan Game Awards says user voting and sales volumes may be used as evaluation references alongside game elements; that is one example of how an award can combine different kinds of evidence, not a reason to let popularity decide your group’s vote.
4. Choose a voting method before ballots go out
The method should match the question you want the result to answer. A single-choice ballot identifies the most first-choice votes. A ranked ballot records fallback preferences and can be used to seek a winner with broader support. A points system is another option, but the official sources here do not compare these methods for informal groups. Whichever you choose, explain it in advance and apply it consistently.

Ranked-choice vote for a consensus-oriented result
For a manageable shortlist, ask each voter to rank up to three finalists. Count first choices. If no title has a majority, eliminate the title with the fewest first-choice votes and transfer those ballots to each voter’s next-ranked remaining title. Repeat until one title has a majority. This is the instant-runoff procedure described by the D.I.C.E. Awards.

The D.I.C.E. Awards says the method helps its winner reflect the strongest overall consensus among voting developers; treat that as the award’s rationale, not proof that this is best for every group.

Single-choice vote for first-choice popularity
If you want to find the title most people pick first, ask each person to choose one finalist and count those votes directly. Describe the result as the group’s most popular first choice, rather than implying that the method weighs fallback preferences.

Let voters abstain from ranking a game they cannot fairly assess. Ask members to disclose a personal stake, such as having worked on a nominated game, and decide whether that person will sit out voting on that title. The Game Developers Choice Awards 2026 rules require ICAN members to recuse themselves from nominating or voting on games with which they are personally involved; a gaming group can adapt that disclosure principle to its own circumstances.
Agree on a tie rule before the ballot. Options include a runoff between tied titles or reporting a tie, but the sources cited here do not prescribe a tie procedure for informal groups. Choose and announce your rule before you know which titles are tied.

6. Announce the result with its scope
When sharing the winner, state the eligible pool, the period covered, the criteria, and the voting method. Note any tie rule or recusals that affected the count. Call it your group’s winner under those rules: an external award, a critics’ list, or an individual member’s favorite can differ without making your result invalid.
