Compare food delivery services for the specific restaurant, address, time, and basket you plan to order—not by a nationwide “best app” list. Check the estimated delivery window, then compare the complete checkout total, including item prices and every applicable fee. No comparable independent data establishes which major service is most reliable nationwide, so treat an app’s estimate and support information as order-specific indicators, not proof of its overall performance.
How to choose a food delivery service
Availability and price can change with your address, restaurant, order size, and ordering time. A useful comparison is local and like-for-like:

- Check availability. Enter your delivery address and see which services list the restaurant at the time you want to order.
- Compare the delivery window. Check the estimate shown before payment for the same time and, where possible, the same restaurant and basket. Treat it as an estimate unless the service explicitly calls it a guarantee.
- Build the same basket. Add identical items on each available service. Compare item prices and discounts before comparing fees.
- Inspect the full checkout total. Note the delivery fee, service fee, any distance or small-order charges, other applicable fees, estimated tax, optional tip, and membership discounts.
- Check alternatives. Compare the delivery total with pickup or the restaurant’s direct ordering channel when available.
If the same restaurant or items are not available on both services, the comparison is approximate. Prices and fees shown for your own address and basket are more relevant than a general fee list.

A delivery fee is only one part of the bill. The platform’s item prices may differ from pickup or in-store prices, and an order may also include service fees, conditional charges, taxes, and an optional tip. DoorDash and Uber Eats both describe multiple possible charge categories; which ones apply and their amounts depend on the order and location. DoorDash’s fee explanation and Uber Eats’ fee explanation describe their respective categories.

DoorDash
DoorDash says its fee structure depends in part on whether a 2026 rollout has reached a customer’s market. Its Help Center initially excluded California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico, and Seattle from that rollout. In other US markets, DoorDash describes a variable service fee influenced by factors such as distance and order size, a fixed delivery fee that varies by merchant, and possible long-distance, regulatory-response, small-order, weather-impact, and optional express fees. In the listed excluded markets, the page says the service fee may vary but is 15% of the subtotal for most orders and 5% for most eligible DashPass restaurant orders; a minimum fee may apply. DoorDash says taxes are estimated before checkout and finalized on the receipt. These rollout details can change, so check the current checkout for your market.
In a July 23, 2026 announcement, DoorDash said its updated delivery fee is fixed by merchant and its service fee varies with factors such as distance and order size. The company also described a new fee tally and in-app fee explanations. DoorDash said that, under its model, over 70% of recent orders would have had the same or lower fees, with a median saving of $0.78. That is DoorDash’s own analysis, not an independent estimate or a prediction for an individual order. Read DoorDash’s announcement.

Uber Eats
Uber says delivery fees can vary by merchant, location, demand, and nearby courier availability. Courier-delivered orders may also have a service fee that varies with factors including basket size. Depending on the order, additional charges can include long-range, small-order, delivery-adjustment, marketplace, and priority delivery fees. Uber also lists a local operating fee for Seattle; legally required charges or merchant charges, such as bag fees, may apply. Uber says tax at checkout is an estimate that can differ from the final receipt. Not every fee category applies to every order, so use the checkout for your actual basket and address.

Does free delivery mean the order has no fees?
No. A “$0 delivery fee” does not by itself mean the order is fee-free. Other charges, item prices, and tax may still affect the total. DoorDash says DashPass members get $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders that meet the subtotal minimum shown in the app. The merchant must be eligible, and the app indicates eligibility and savings. Check the actual order rather than assuming the membership removes every charge. DoorDash’s DashPass page explains the stated conditions.

When does a membership make sense?
Treat membership as a break-even calculation, not an automatic saving. Compare its charge and any applicable tax with the fees you would otherwise pay on the orders you realistically expect to place. For each order, check merchant eligibility, the in-app basket minimum, exclusions, and charges that remain. Promotions and terms can change, so verify them when you order.

Is delivery cheaper than pickup?
It depends on the restaurant, platform, basket, and fees. Compare the actual item prices as well as delivery charges: a lower delivery fee does not necessarily mean a lower total if menu prices differ. Pickup or ordering directly from the restaurant may avoid some delivery charges or price differences, but check the displayed total rather than assuming.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 notice cites separate studies and reports with widely varying delivery-versus-pickup and item-price comparisons. One cited study found restaurant delivery customers paid nearly 80% more on average than pickup customers for the same order; other cited total-cost comparisons ranged from 25% to over 90% more, depending on platform. The notice also describes media comparisons reporting restaurant item prices over 20% higher in some cases. These are findings reported by sources cited in the notice, not a universal current markup or an FTC experiment. They illustrate why your own basket is the useful comparison. See the FTC’s 2026 notice.
Which food delivery app is most reliable?
The available evidence does not support a nationwide ranking of DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other services for on-time delivery, order accuracy, cancellations, or resolution quality. Fee pages explain charges, not service-level performance. For the order in front of you, compare the restaurant’s availability at your desired time, the delivery window shown before payment, and the tracking and support information in the app. Your own experience with that restaurant and address can also inform a future choice, but it is not a platform-wide performance measure. A restaurant’s own ordering channel is another option to check; there is not enough comparative evidence here to say it is more dependable.
Why fee disclosures can differ by location
The FTC said in an April 2026 announcement that several states had adopted clearer fee-disclosure rules, but requirements were not uniform nationwide. The agency announced a proposed-rule inquiry covering total prices, the nature and recipient of fees, variable charges, item-price differences, promotions, and unauthorized billing. That announcement describes an inquiry, not a final nationwide rule. State requirements and regulatory status may change; consult current official sources for a specific state rather than treating a general guide as legal advice. Read the FTC announcement.
