1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a fitness app by checking what it collects and why, whether you can limit access to individual data types, who else can access the data, and how export and deletion work. Then review both the app’s own privacy settings and your phone’s health permissions. A privacy label or general promise is not a substitute for checking the actual policy and controls.
What to check before choosing an app
Health and activity records can be sensitive. Assess an app’s collection and sharing practices alongside its features: ask what it gathers, why it needs each category, and whether optional collection can be turned off. Apple identifies data minimization, on-device processing, transparency and control, and security as useful privacy principles, but those principles are not a claim that every fitness app follows them (Apple’s Health and Fitness Apps Privacy Overview).

- Collection and purpose: Look for the data categories collected, the purposes for using them, and any optional collection controls.
- Local processing and account requirements: Check whether the features you want work on your device or require an account and server upload. On-device processing is a privacy principle to look for, not a guarantee about a particular app.
- Permission granularity: Find out whether you can limit access by health-data category, location, or feature, and whether those permissions are adjustable in both the app and the phone’s operating system.
- Sharing and integrations: Identify connected apps that can read, write, or upload information. Check what each authorization permits and remove integrations you no longer use.
- Visibility and history: Review who can see your profile, activities, routes, and location. Check whether changing a default affects only future records or also existing ones.
- Export, deletion, and retention: Check what you can export, what account deletion removes, what exceptions remain, and how long deletion may take.
- Security and account access: Review available account protections and how sensitive data is secured. Apple, for example, describes encryption for Health app data when a device is locked; that does not establish how another app or a cloud copy is protected (Apple Health data security).
Provider policies describe the providers’ own services; they are not independent audits or comparative rankings. Verify the controls in the app version and region you plan to use, since features and defaults can differ.

Your phone may let you choose which health categories an app can access, while the app may separately let connected services access your records. Review both layers rather than treating an operating-system permission as the whole privacy picture. Apple documents category-level Health sharing and a way to review or stop app sharing through Safety Check (Apple’s Health and Fitness Apps Privacy Overview).

Before authorizing an integration, inspect its scope. Strava says connected apps may be authorized to view profile and private activity data, including data in map areas hidden by its privacy controls (Strava: About Connected Apps). That makes the integration’s access worth checking separately from what appears on your public profile.
Review visibility and old records
In the app, inspect profile and activity visibility, route and map controls, and any options for using health data to improve the product or sharing it. Strava’s documentation illustrates why app-level controls matter: changing privacy settings does not retroactively change controls on past activities, and some public segments and routes created by users remain after account deletion (Strava: Privacy Controls; Strava: Delete Your Strava Account).

Separate export from deletion
Being able to download a copy of your data and being able to remove it are different questions. Check what an export includes, what account deletion removes, whether any categories are exceptions, and whether copies may persist in backups or take time to disappear.

Fitbit’s privacy policy says most information is deleted within 30 days after account deletion, while some information may take up to 90 days; those are Fitbit-specific timelines, not a general standard for fitness apps (Fitbit Privacy Policy, accessed 2026). Read the service’s current policy for its deletion process and exceptions before leaving.
Use fitness tracking as wellness information
Do not treat a tracking feature as a diagnostic tool unless the provider explicitly establishes that use. Google Health says sleep tracking is not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition (Google Health: sleep tracking). Consider whether the feature’s purpose and limitations suit your needs, as well as its privacy controls.
