You can track health and fitness without buying a conventional smartwatch—but first decide what you want to avoid. A screenless wrist band removes the display, a smart ring changes the shape, and a clip-on or apparel-mounted sensor moves tracking off your wrist. The right choice depends on where you’ll wear it, whether you need GPS without your phone, what features cost extra, and how much interaction you’re willing to have with an app.
Decide what “no smartwatch” means to you
A screenless fitness tracker can still be a wearable connected to your phone. What it generally removes is the on-device display and the invitation to check notifications throughout the day. If you want no watch-shaped device at all, consider a ring or an off-wrist sensor instead.

- No display: A screenless band tracks on your wrist, with data and controls mainly handled in a phone app.
- No wristband: A smart ring offers a compact alternative; category guidance particularly associates rings with passive tracking such as sleep and temperature, though capabilities vary by model. Wareable’s 2026 screenless tracker guide covers bands, rings, hybrid watches, and clip-on or pendant trackers.
- No daily interaction: Look for automatic activity detection and background tracking, but confirm whether workouts can be started or controlled on the device or must be managed in an app.
- No wrist wear: A clip-on or pendant may suit your preference, but placement can affect which sensors maintain skin contact and which metrics are available.
Choose where the sensor will sit
Wear location is not just a comfort choice: it can determine what the tracker can measure. Category-level guidance notes that clip-on or pendant use may lose skin-contact metrics such as heart rate, HRV, stress, SpO2, and advanced sleep stages. The exact effect depends on the product and its design, so check its placement guidance rather than assuming a clip works like wrist wear.
Wrist band
A band is the straightforward option if continuous wrist wear suits you. Garmin announced CIRQA Smart Band on July 21, 2026, describing it as a screen-free band that monitors health and fitness around the clock through Garmin Connect, automatically detects and records a variety of activities, and requires no subscription. Those are Garmin’s product claims, not independent measurements. Read Garmin’s CIRQA announcement.

Smart ring
A ring avoids a wrist-worn band and may suit someone focused on passive trends. Don’t assume it will match a band for workout controls or every metric: the guide’s category observations are not specifications for a particular ring. Check the named model’s sizing, workout features, app requirements, and subscription terms before choosing it.
Off-wrist band or apparel
WHOOP says its 5.0 and MG sensors can be worn off the wrist with a CoreKnit Bicep Band or compatible WHOOP Body garments. It recommends wrist wear overnight for its most accurate sleep data, so off-wrist placement may not be the right all-day, all-metric solution for every wearer. The accessories are specific to the WHOOP system. WHOOP’s wear guide explains compatible options.

Check GPS and phone dependence before buying
“Tracks runs” does not necessarily mean “records a route without my phone.” A tracker may have onboard GPS, use the paired phone’s location, or offer no route tracking in the way you expect. Check the exact model’s specifications and app requirements for phone-free GPS, and confirm whether your phone must be present during a workout. This distinction can change by model and product generation; Tom’s Guide’s comparison of CIRQA, Fitbit Air, WHOOP 5.0, and Oura treats GPS and phone dependence as an important point to verify.

Compare features with total cost
A no-subscription claim is useful, but it does not tell you whether another tracker’s free app will meet your needs. Before committing, list the insights you care about—such as sleep summaries, workout history, or longer-term trends—and check which are included without recurring payment. Subscription entitlements can vary by model, plan, and country, and may change over time.

- Separate device functions and basic app access from features that require a paid tier.
- Decide whether the paid insights are important enough to include in your ongoing cost.
- Check phone compatibility and whether the app works with your phone’s operating system.
For CIRQA, Garmin says a subscription is not required. For other products, verify current plan terms rather than assuming a category-wide rule.
Match interaction to your workout habits
Screenless devices shift much of the experience into the phone app. That can be a plus if you want tracking to happen quietly in the background, but less convenient if you want to start, pause, or inspect a workout from your wrist. Ask yourself whether automatic activity detection is enough, or whether you want manual workout controls and immediate on-device feedback. Then confirm those functions for the specific model; “screenless” alone does not establish what controls it has.

Think through charging, water, and fit
Battery figures are manufacturer estimates tied to a particular device, not a guarantee of the runtime you’ll get. Garmin says CIRQA lasts “up to 10 days”; actual battery life depends on the device and use. Check how it charges and whether the routine fits your habits before treating an advertised maximum as a promise.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →WHOOP says its 5.0 and MG devices are IP68 and water resistant to 10 meters, and that its Wireless PowerPack takes about two hours to charge from empty to full. These are WHOOP’s stated specifications and estimate in its April 2, 2026 guide—not a claim for other trackers. Verify water suitability and charging method for the model you are considering. See WHOOP’s April 2, 2026 wear and accessories guide.
- Try the fit for the hours you expect to wear it, including overnight if sleep tracking matters.
- Check whether replacement bands or apparel are available and compatible with that exact model.
- Consider whether charging requires removing the tracker or can be done while wearing it; WHOOP says its PowerPack charges on-wrist.
- Look up the device’s own water guidance instead of assuming that a band, ring, or pendant is swim-safe.
Use this shortlist to make the decision
| What matters most | Start with | Verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous tracking on your wrist without a display | Screenless band | GPS and phone dependence, app and subscription terms, workout controls, charging |
| Compact, passive tracking in a different form | Smart ring | Fit, workout suitability, app compatibility, paid features |
| Sensor placement away from your wrist | Compatible bicep band or apparel system | Supported placement, available metrics, sleep-wear guidance, accessory compatibility |
| Tracking without close skin contact | Clip-on or pendant, if its capabilities suit you | Which metrics are lost or limited at that placement |
If a screenless band is what you mean, Garmin’s CIRQA is a directly relevant named option; its specifications and availability should be checked against Garmin’s current regional product information. If the real goal is avoiding wrist wear, compare rings or a supported off-wrist system instead. For any shortlist, make the final choice on the exact model’s GPS, app, paid-feature boundaries, fit, and charging—not on the broad label “fitness tracker.”
