Choose a fitness tracker by starting with your regular workouts, whether you need outdoor routes without carrying your phone, and the health information you will actually check. Then verify those needs against the exact model, its phone compatibility and app support. A longer feature list is not automatically a better fit.
How do I choose a fitness tracker?
Work through these questions in order. They narrow the choice before you compare individual devices.

- Which workouts do you do most? List your usual activities—such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, weightlifting or mixed workouts—and check that the exact model supports them. If you want workouts recorded automatically, verify which activities it recognizes; automatic detection is not the same as detailed sport-specific tracking.
- Do you need outdoor route or distance tracking? Check whether the tracker has built-in GPS or relies on connected GPS from a phone. If it needs a phone, decide whether you will carry yours on every relevant workout.
- Which health trends will you review? Pick a short list, such as heart rate, sleep duration or heart-rate variability (HRV). Confirm that the model measures and presents the metrics you care about, and that they sync to an app you use.
- Do you require a particular health feature? If ECG or another advanced function is essential, check the exact model, your country, age eligibility, software and app requirements. Do not assume a feature is available across a whole brand’s product line.
- Will it work with your phone and fit your routine? Verify phone and app compatibility, the data that transfers, comfort and how often the device needs charging. Check current manufacturer specifications for battery life, charging and any subscription requirements before buying.
What features do I need in a fitness tracker?
Prioritize the features tied to your routine. For general activity and wellness trends, a simpler tracker may be sufficient; outdoor navigation, detailed sport modes or an advanced health app can narrow the choices considerably.

Google Health lists walking, running, biking, sports, elliptical, aerobics, swimming and rowing among activities automatically detected by the Fitbit Inspire series, which includes Inspire 3. That list does not establish that every model provides equally detailed metrics for every sport. Check the exact device’s exercise modes and what each mode records, especially if you swim, cycle or lift weights regularly. Google Health’s Fitbit activity-recognition information is a starting point for the Inspire series.

Heart rate and sleep
Heart-rate and sleep information is most useful when it answers a question you will revisit—for example, how your resting heart rate trends over time or how long you sleep. Compare what each exact model and its app provide rather than treating the words “health tracking” as a standard feature set. Readings from a wrist sensor can be affected by fit and activity. Google Health advises wearing the device with its back against the skin, snugly, and higher on the wrist during exercise. Repeated wrist bending can interfere with heart-rate readings; Google notes that “Many exercises, such as bike riding or weightlifting, cause you to bend your wrist frequently.” Fitbit’s heart-rate guidance explains these factors.
ECG and other advanced functions
ECG is a specific feature, not a baseline capability of every fitness tracker. Apple describes its ECG app as producing a single-lead electrocardiogram; Google Health lists supported Fitbit and Pixel Watch products; Garmin says its ECG app is limited to selected compatible watches and regions. Availability can depend on the model, country, age, software and app. Check the manufacturer’s current eligibility information before buying: Google Health ECG app compatibility, Apple Watch health features and Garmin health features.
Google Health reports that, in a study of 440 people, its ECG app algorithm correctly identified people with AFib 98.7% of the time and people with normal sinus rhythm 100% of the time. The source page does not state the study’s publication year. These figures describe that app’s study, not all wearables, all users or the accuracy of an individual result; they are not a comparison between brands. Consumer wearable features and readings should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a way to rule out a condition. Garmin explicitly says certain health metrics are not medical devices. For a health concern, consult an appropriate clinician and follow the device’s official instructions.

Do I need GPS in a fitness tracker?
GPS matters when you want an outdoor route or distance record, particularly if you do not want to carry a phone. A tracker with built-in GPS can record location using its own receiver; connected GPS depends on a compatible phone being present. Verify which arrangement the exact model uses rather than relying on a product family name or a general feature label.
GPS is not an accuracy guarantee. Trees and tall buildings can delay a satellite connection, and a weak signal can affect route and activity data. Google Health also says distance may be less accurate when GPS is unavailable during part of a workout. Its guidance notes: “A weak GPS signal might affect the accuracy of your route and other activity data.” See Fitbit’s GPS guidance and Fitbit’s information about activity-data accuracy before relying on GPS for your use case.
How should phone compatibility and app syncing affect my choice?
Confirm that the tracker works with your phone before comparing its health metrics. Then check which data transfers to the manufacturer’s app and to any other app you depend on. An integration may not carry every metric, and two apps can show different values because they use different available data or calculations. Google Health notes that some metrics are not available in Google Health and that values can differ between apps. Review Google Health’s information on Fitbit data and activity accuracy and the exact device’s current compatibility details.

Quick Recap
What else affects day-to-day usefulness?
- Fit: A tracker has to sit securely and maintain skin contact for its sensors to work as intended. If possible, try the band on; comfort affects whether you will wear it consistently.
- Charging: Check the exact model’s current battery and charging specifications against how often you are willing to take it off. Do not infer runtime from a brand or product family.
- Total cost: Include any subscription that is necessary for the functions you plan to use, and confirm current prices before purchase.
- Evidence limits: Feature pages are not a substitute for independent comparative testing. No comparative accuracy or value winner is established by the manufacturer information cited here.
