How to Choose a First Life Vest for Safe Boating and Water Activities

No single life vest is the best for everyone, so this guide doesn’t crown a model. It shows you how to pick the right one for your wearer, activity and water. The core product is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device (PFD) whose label matches the person’s weight and chest size and the way it will be used. The Coast Guard Boating Safety Division puts the priority this way: “The best USCG Approved lifejacket or buoyancy aid is the one you will wear.”

Start with the label, not the marketing

Look for the U.S. Coast Guard approval label on the specific item. Federal carriage requirements are met by approved, serviceable devices of the right size. Swim aids, water wings, pool floats and generic inflatable toys do not qualify. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says plainly that flotation toys, rafts and air mattresses are not life jackets.

The label also tells you the intended use. Some devices are approved only for restricted activities, and the label states the permitted application and its limits.

Five questions that decide the right vest

1. Who is wearing it?

Size by the person, not by an age guess. Read the label’s weight and chest-size range. Child approvals are based on weight, according to the AAP. Different bodies float differently, so the label range is a starting point and the in-water check below is the real test.

Onyx A/M-24 Inflatable Life Jacket, Auto/Manual, USCG Approved
  • U.S. COAST GUARD APPROVED: This USCG-approved Inflatable Life Jacket inflates automatically upon water immersion or manually pulling the inflation handle. Includes a back-up oral inflation tube. Approved for users 16 years or older, and over 80 lbs. Fits 30”-52” chest
  • HIGHLY BUOYANT: Provides 22.5 pounds of buoyancy when fully inflated, keeping you safe and afloat. Its buoyant material offers the necessary support to keep your head above water, providing peace of mind when boating, fishing, paddling
  • MANUAL INFLATION OPTION: Easily converts to MANUAL ONLY inflation mode when paddling, fly-fishing, or other activities where there is good chance you may get wet or end up in the water. Simply pull the inflation handle, providing buoyancy to keep you safely floating. Manual conversion cap included
  • COMFORTABLE FIT: This inflatable PFD incorporates an adjustable body belt, front buckle closure, and a comfortable neoprene neckline, ensuring a secure and personalized fit
  • REARMING KIT: Inflatable life jackets can be reused after each inflation. Always read your Owner’s Manual for the proper way to initially arm your life jacket, and how to re-arm it after it has been inflated. Use Onyx Rearming Kit #1352 for this product. It is recommended to purchase an extra rearming kit to try out your inflatable life jacket and become familiar with its operation

2. Can they swim, and could they be unconscious?

The Coast Guard separates two kinds of device:

  • Devices that give face-up support regardless of the wearer’s physical condition.
  • Buoyancy aids, which need the wearer to swim or use postural movements to get their face out of the water.

Weak swimmers, non-swimmers and small children should lean toward the first group and read the label’s performance statements carefully. Inflatable devices are not appropriate for weak or non-swimmers, according to the Coast Guard.

3. What is the activity?

Casual boating, paddling, waterskiing or towed activities, personal watercraft, whitewater and sailboarding all place different demands on a vest. The Coast Guard recommends or notes requirements for wearing one in the towed, PWC, whitewater and sailboarding cases. Check that the label permits your use.

4. How rough or remote is the water?

Calm, sheltered water near help calls for different performance than open water or places where rescue could take a long time. Coast Guard guidance describes different intended rescue and water conditions for different performance levels.

5. Will it actually be worn?

Comfort, mobility and ventilation matter because a vest in a locker saves no one. The Coast Guard says a PFD can save a life only when it is worn.

Reading the performance ratings

The Coast Guard describes four wearable design approaches: inherent flotation (foam), inflatable, hybrid and special purpose.

Older Type labels

Type What Coast Guard guidance says
Type I Greatest required inherent buoyancy; turns most unconscious wearers from face down to a vertical or slightly backward position.
Type II Intended to turn some unconscious wearers to a position where breathing is not impeded.
Type III Supports a conscious user upright; not required to turn an unconscious wearer face-up.
Type V Approved for restricted activities; the label states the application and limits.

Performance Levels

Newer labels use Performance Levels, with buoyancy measured in Newtons. The Coast Guard says Level 70 equals 15.74 pounds of buoyancy. Don’t compare the number alone. The Coast Guard describes different intended rescue and water conditions for Levels 50, 70, 100, 150 and 275, so read its current selection guidance alongside the product label.

Fit check before you buy or launch

  1. Confirm the label’s weight and chest-size range matches the wearer.
  2. Fasten every strap and buckle, then adjust until it is secure and comfortable.
  3. For a foam vest, check that it fits snugly and does not ride up above the chin or ears.
  4. Try it in water, as the Coast Guard advises, to confirm the airway stays clear. The Red Cross also recommends practicing with the jacket on.
  5. For children, teach them to put it on and get comfortable in it, per the AAP.

Children and the law

Federal law requires children under 13 aboard a vessel that is underway to wear an appropriate Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD. The exceptions are when they are below deck or inside an enclosed cabin. State rules may differ, so check your state boating authority for your waterway and activity.

For vessels in general, a Coast Guard boating FAQ says a recreational boat must carry an approved, serviceable wearable PFD of appropriate size for each person aboard. Boats over 16 feet generally must also carry an approved throwable device, with an exception for canoes and kayaks. That is carriage guidance, so confirm current rules for your boat, waterway and state.

When to wear it

The Coast Guard recommends wearing a wearable PFD whenever a vessel is underway. The Red Cross recommends life jackets for everyone in or on oceans and open water, during boating and water sports, and around cold water and ice. It specifically recommends them for small children and weak swimmers near water, including pools and waterparks.

A vest is not a substitute for watching. The AAP says life jackets never replace adult supervision.

The Coast Guard Boating Safety Division’s 2024 data show why. Where cause of death was known, 76% of fatal boating incident victims drowned. Where PFD usage was known, 87% were not wearing one. The Coast Guard FAQ says these figures are consistent year after year but does not give case counts in the cited passage.

Inspect and maintain it

Foam vests

Check for wear and buoyancy at least annually, per the Coast Guard. Discard any that are waterlogged, faded or damaged.

Inflatable vests

Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. For serviceability the Coast Guard says the cylinder must be full and the status indicators green.

Any vest

The Red Cross advises checking that buckles and straps work, and discarding a jacket with torn fabric or loose straps.

Shopping checklist

  • Search for “U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket,” then filter by activity and size.
  • Check the approval label in photos or the product specifications before ordering.
  • Match the label’s weight and chest range to the wearer, not just an age band.
  • Check the performance level or type and any use restrictions.
  • Prefer retailers that let you filter by activity and size, and confirm the return policy so you can test the fit in water.

This guide is based on Coast Guard, AAP and Red Cross guidance. It is not a hands-on test of any particular model, and I can’t say which specific vest suits you without knowing the wearer’s size, swimming ability, activity, water and location.
