Choose a converter that supports your exact input and output formats, then check where it processes files and what settings it applies. For sensitive material, prefer approved offline software or verify that a browser tool processes files on your device. For quality, keep the original, avoid unnecessary resizing or format changes, and open the converted file in the app or destination that will use it.
Start with the file and the destination
Before comparing converters, identify the source format, the format you need, and the app, device, or recipient that must open the result. A converter is useful only if it supports that exact combination and gives you the settings needed for the job.

- Check format support: Confirm both the input and output formats rather than relying on a broad claim such as “supports images” or “converts documents.”
- Check output controls: Look for resolution, quality, bit-depth, color-profile, transparency, and metadata options relevant to your file.
- Check practical limits: Confirm file-size and batch limits, and whether an account is required.
- Check compatibility: Plan to open the result in its intended destination; format support and rendering can vary between apps.
There is no single best converter for every file type or purpose. Compare tools against these needs rather than treating a product ranking as a substitute for checking the actual settings and policies.
How to assess whether a converter protects privacy
For a private file, the key question is not simply whether a converter is online. It is whether the file is uploaded, what information is retained, and what other data the service collects. Browser apps can read a file after you select or drop it, but that capability alone does not establish whether a particular site sends it to a server; see MDN’s File API documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
- Read the current privacy policy. Look for statements about file contents, filenames, metadata, retention, deletion timing, subprocessors, analytics, and account requirements.
- Distinguish local processing from encrypted upload. Encryption can protect a transfer, but it does not mean the file stays on your device. Look for a clear explanation of where conversion happens.
- Test a harmless file in the browser. Open the browser’s developer tools, select the Network panel, and watch requests while converting. Check for file uploads as well as third-party requests. This is a practical check, not a complete security audit or a guarantee that every behavior is visible.
- Consider code delivery. A browser converter may process a file locally while loading its code or conversion engine from a server. Local file processing does not by itself establish that the delivered code is trustworthy.
- Use organizational approval for high-risk files. If a file contains regulated, confidential, or highly sensitive information, use a tool approved for that information by the responsible organization instead of relying on a generic website’s marketing language.
Vendor policies are useful evidence of what a service says it does, but they are not independent audits, and both policies and implementations can change. For example, LocalConvert’s policy says files are processed locally and that conversion history—including filenames, sizes, and timestamps—is stored in IndexedDB. OfflineFileConverter’s policy, last updated 31 July 2026, says files, names, and metadata are not transmitted, while also describing Google Analytics 4 usage analytics. Those disclosures illustrate why “files stay local” should not be read as “the site collects nothing.”
Choose formats and settings to preserve quality
“Lossy” and “lossless” describe different tradeoffs, not a universal ranking of file extensions. A lossy conversion discards information; repeating lossy conversions can introduce further changes. For images, MDN describes JPEG as lossy and useful for photographs, while PNG is lossless and often better for screenshots, diagrams, line art, or transparency when precise reproduction matters.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- For compact photographs: JPEG may be a practical choice when broad compatibility and smaller files matter. Check the quality setting and compare the result with the source.
- For screenshots, diagrams, and transparent artwork: Consider PNG when lossless data or alpha transparency matters more than file size.
- For preservation work: Keep the highest available resolution and bit depth, retain the relevant color profile or specified color space, and use uncompressed or losslessly compressed data for a faithful photographic representation. The Library of Congress’s Recommended Formats Statement 2025–2026 also identifies descriptive and technical metadata, including camera EXIF where available. This is archival guidance for digital photographs, not a mandatory recipe for every everyday conversion.
An extension does not tell you what quality a particular conversion will produce. Settings and implementation matter. For example, MDN’s Canvas API documentation describes a quality parameter for lossy image formats and says PNG is used as a fallback when an unsupported or unspecified format is requested. That is behavior of this specific web API, not a rule that every converter follows.
A reliable conversion workflow
- Keep an untouched original. Work on a copy and retain the source until you have checked the output.
- Select only the needed conversion. Avoid unnecessary format changes, resizing, or bit-depth reductions. Apply them only when a destination requirement or file-size constraint calls for them.
- Set quality and color options deliberately. Preserve color profiles and relevant metadata when they are part of the deliverable. If privacy matters more, consider stripping personal or location metadata—but recognize that doing so changes the file.
- Convert once where possible. Avoid repeated lossy encoding, which can further alter the data.
- Open and compare the result. Check it in the target application or destination, paying attention to appearance, transparency, color, dimensions, and whether the file opens as expected.
The Library of Congress expresses one archival criterion as “Highest resolution available, not rescaled or interpolated.” That standard is useful when fidelity is the priority; everyday sharing may reasonably favor smaller files or wider compatibility instead.
Rank #3
- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Make the tradeoff explicit
Choose offline or verified on-device processing when privacy is the priority; choose settings and formats that match the content when fidelity is the priority. Those goals can overlap, but neither is guaranteed by a converter’s name, file extension, or claim that it is “secure” or “high quality.” Check the tool’s behavior and policy, preserve the original, and test the output where it will actually be used.
