Choose a waiver-wire wide receiver by looking first at routes and targets, not last week’s fantasy-point total. A receiver earning steady playing time and a meaningful share of his team’s targets is usually a better bet than one whose value rests on a single long touchdown. Then weigh whether that role will last, your league’s scoring, this week’s matchup and what your roster needs.
Start with opportunity, not the box score
A receiver can score well on a small number of chances, but that does not necessarily make him a dependable pickup. Begin with whether he is regularly on the field and running routes; then check whether targets are following. Useful measures include routes run, route participation, snaps, targets and target share. Target share shows how much of a team’s passing attention the player receives, making it easier to compare him with teammates.

These measures can help identify a role change, but they are descriptive tools—not a guarantee of future production.

Use efficiency as context
Yards per route run and targets per route run add context to a player’s opportunity. Strong efficiency can be encouraging, but a small sample can make a receiver look more dominant—or more ineffective—than his longer-term role warrants. NFL.com’s Week 3, 2026 waiver coverage, for example, described Dontayvion Wicks at 2.8 yards per route run, seventh among receivers with at least 50 routes. That is a dated example, not a universal cutoff for identifying a breakout.

Ask why the role changed—and whether it will last
More routes or targets may reflect a genuine promotion, a change in how the offense uses the receiver, or an opening created by an injured teammate. Find the cause before deciding how much to value the new workload. In NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 coverage, Mack Hollins had a team-high 19.5% target share and 2.3 yards per route run while A.J. Brown was out; that role was tied to Brown’s absence. A temporary opening can still help this week, but its longer-term value depends on what happens when the injured player returns.

- Kalif Raymond: NFL.com reported a 23.1% target share, second on his team, plus 19 catches, 214 receiving yards and 2.8 yards per route run through three weeks. The article recommended him despite a difficult immediate matchup.
- Dontayvion Wicks: NFL.com reported a 31.2% air-yards share and 2.3 yards per route run. Air-yards share can help flag a downfield role, though it does not by itself establish a steady catch floor.
- Malik Washington: NFL.com reported 34 routes and 10 targets in Week 3, evidence of involvement in that game rather than proof that the workload would persist.

For a plug-in starter, favor a role that creates repeatable chances: regular routes and targets can support a steadier expectation. A receiver with fewer targets but deep routes, substantial air yards or a big-play profile may offer more upside and more week-to-week volatility. If a player’s case depends mainly on an explosive play or touchdown, treat him as a higher-variance stash rather than assuming the production will repeat.

That distinction also answers “Is this breakout real or just one good game?” Look for an expanding role alongside the production. NFL.com’s Week 3, 2026 analysis distinguished a boom-or-bust profile from route-efficient production; one spike week alone cannot show that a change is durable.
Adjust for matchup, alignment and league scoring
Matchup matters for this week’s expectation, but it should adjust your view of a player’s role—not replace it. Check the opponent and where the receiver usually lines up. NFL.com’s Week 2, 2026 start/sit analysis noted that a slot receiver may avoid a difficult outside-corner matchup if he runs most of his routes inside; it also discussed how an anticipated shadow corner can reduce a receiver’s immediate outlook. A favorable matchup does not create opportunity for a receiver who is rarely on the field.

Fit the player to your scoring rules and lineup problem. In PPR, reliable catch volume may be especially useful; in standard scoring or when you need a one-week ceiling, downfield chances and touchdown potential may carry more weight. These are decision considerations, not a universal formula. A safe flex, a bye-week substitute and a bench stash can call for different profiles.
Choose between two available receivers
When candidates are close, compare them on the same questions rather than letting the most recent touchdown settle the decision.

Make the claim or FAAB bid fit your roster
- Check availability and current status. Review the latest injury report, depth chart and waiver ownership. Weekly fantasy recommendations and player availability age quickly.
- Decide what the roster needs. Identify whether you need a starter now, a bye-week fill-in or a developmental stash, and compare each candidate with the player you would realistically replace.
- Prioritize role over last week’s points. Prefer a receiver with a plausible path to recurring routes and targets over one whose case is mostly a touchdown.
- Set the cost in context. Use waiver priority or FAAB in light of league depth and your budget. There is no universally correct bid established by these usage measures; do not spend heavily solely because of one scoring play.
In a shallow league, a receiver with a credible route to weekly targets is often more useful than a long-shot stash. In a deeper league, an injury-created opening or emerging role can make a bench claim worthwhile even before the player is a dependable starter.
Know what the numbers can—and cannot—tell you
NFL.com’s weekly articles and PFF’s usage report offer expert analysis and descriptive statistics. They do not establish a controlled, universal rule that a particular target share or yards-per-route-run figure predicts future fantasy success, or an exact FAAB bidding algorithm. Treat the metrics as evidence for comparing roles, not as a promise about results. The 2026 player examples above are tied to their cited weeks and should not be treated as current rankings for a later slate.
