A questionable tag is a reason to monitor your tight end’s status, not proof that he will play or sit. To choose a replacement, verify the latest report and game-time updates, compare players you can actually start in your league, and make the decision before the relevant lineup lock.
What does “questionable” mean for your lineup?
It signals uncertainty, but the label alone does not settle a start-or-sit decision. Check the official injury report for the correct player and game, then look for updates closer to kickoff. The NFL’s 2026 injury report is week-specific; an injury report designation is also distinct from a team’s later inactive announcement.

Teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff, according to NFL support’s Auto-Swap Inactives guidance. If you wait for that announcement, make sure you still have a replacement whose game has not started and whose lineup slot can still be changed.
Build a shortlist from players you can actually use
Start with tight ends on your roster, then check the free-agent or waiver pool permitted by your league. Availability and acquisition rules vary by platform and league settings. Before comparing projections, confirm that each candidate is eligible at tight end, can be acquired in time, and can be placed in your lineup before the applicable lock. The usable replacement is not necessarily the highest-ranked player in a general list—it is the best option your league lets you start.
Compare replacement candidates on the same terms
Use your league’s scoring settings and weigh the following factors together. If you have multiple candidates, compare them side by side rather than relying on a name or a single projection.

- Opportunity and role: Look for evidence of routes, targets, snaps, and recent involvement. A tight end with a dependable role may offer a better floor than one whose appeal rests on a single recent play.
- Offensive situation: Consider how the player fits into his team’s passing game and whether the likely game environment gives the offense reason or opportunity to throw.
- Opponent matchup: Check the opponent’s performance against tight ends, while remembering that matchup statistics are context—not a guarantee of an individual result.
- Scoring format: Apply your league’s reception scoring and any tight-end premium. A player’s relative value can change substantially between standard, PPR, and premium formats.
- Acquisition and timing: Include waiver priority or cost, the time needed to add the player, and whether his game starts before the questionable player’s game.
NFL Fantasy’s 2026 weekly tight-end start/sit articles illustrate how role, recent production, and opponent context inform a decision. Their named recommendations were tied to particular weeks—Week 1 was published September 9, Week 2 on September 16 and updated September 18, and Week 3 on September 23, 2026—so use the approach, not those player calls, for another week.
Plan around kickoff and lineup lock
- Note both kickoff times. Identify when the questionable player’s game begins and when each replacement plays.
- Check your platform’s lock and substitution rules. NFL.com’s 2025 rules allow an owner to change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start. Your platform’s displayed deadline and league configuration determine what applies to you.
- Preserve a later-starting option if your rules allow it. If you want to wait for a final update, make sure a replacement has not already played and that you can still move him into the lineup.
- Recheck status before the earliest relevant deadline. Do not assume you can wait until the questionable player is declared inactive; the replacement’s earlier kickoff may close your fallback path.
Use platform tools as aids, not guarantees
NFL.com’s Best Available tool uses projections and offers time filters including “This Week,” “Rest of Season,” “Playoffs,” and future weeks. Use the weekly view for a one-week replacement, but treat projections as estimates rather than certainty.

NFL.com’s Auto-Swap Inactives feature is limited: NFL support says it swaps only a player projected to score zero points. Check how the feature is configured and behaves in your league before relying on it. It is an NFL.com feature, not a rule that applies across fantasy platforms.
Platform status labels can also serve different purposes. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury/inactive list for player status; its guidance on injured-reserve slots says a player already in an ESPN IR slot who changes from OUT/IR to QUESTIONABLE/DOUBTFUL does not invalidate the roster under the described rules. That is ESPN-specific IR behavior, not a reason to treat a questionable tag as a lineup recommendation.

- Have I checked the current official report and the latest update for this player and game?
- Which tight ends are actually rostered or available under my league’s rules?
- Am I comparing role, recent opportunity, offense, matchup, and scoring format?
- Can I still make the substitution when I expect to know more, given both game times and my platform’s lock?
- If I use an auto-swap or projection tool, do I understand its limits?
