1. Confirm the starter’s status and your lineup deadline
An injury designation earlier in the week is not the same as a confirmed inactive. NFL Fantasy’s help guide describes “Q” as uncertain and potentially a game-time decision. Check the latest team news and the status shown in your fantasy app close to kickoff; forecasts are estimates, not guarantees. NFL Fantasy’s guide to managing your team explains the distinction and the limits of projections.

Find the actual lock rule for your league before deciding how long to wait. On ESPN, roster changes are allowed until the player’s scheduled game begins, subject to eligibility and roster rules; other platforms and custom leagues may work differently. Check your league’s settings and the platform’s current instructions. ESPN’s Setting Your Lineup guide, updated August 11, 2026, describes ESPN’s rules.
Late inactive news can make timing difficult. NFL Support search-result text describes Auto-Swap Inactives as using a manager-ranked backup list when a starter is projected for zero points, but the linked help page could not be verified directly. Check the current app to see whether that feature is available and how it works before relying on it. NFL Support: Auto-Swap Inactives.

2. Look at eligible bench players first
Start by identifying who can legally fill the vacant slot under your league’s position-eligibility rules. A starter’s direct backup can be worth considering if there is a meaningful chance that player inherits work, but the depth-chart connection alone does not make the backup the best choice.
Compare the candidates’ likely roles: expected snaps, touches, routes, targets, or other usage that matters for the position. Then consider whether that usage suits your scoring system. A player’s value can change between standard, half-PPR, PPR, and leagues with bonuses, so apply your own settings rather than relying on a generic projection.

3. Use waivers if the bench has no credible option
If no eligible bench player offers a reasonable path to production, look at unrostered options. Check each candidate’s likely role and matchup, and consider upcoming opponents too if you may need the player beyond this week. NFL Fantasy analyst Marcas Grant describes replacing injured players as one of the main uses of the waiver wire. His in-season roster management guide also emphasizes role, workload, and schedule.

Waiver timing and rules vary. NFL.com’s beginner guide describes Tuesday claims and Wednesday awards for standard NFL.com leagues, but it is dated guidance, not a universal schedule. Verify your current league settings rather than assuming those days apply. NFL.com’s beginner guide to playing fantasy football.
4. Compare candidates on the factors that change the decision
| Factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Opportunity | Likely snaps, touches, routes, targets, and whether the role is expected to continue. A one-week spike may not repeat if the player lacks regular playing time or steady work. |
| Scoring fit | How your league rewards the player’s position and usage. Apply your scoring rules rather than treating a platform projection as a league-specific answer. |
| Matchup and schedule | The immediate opponent, plus upcoming opponents if you are adding the player for more than one week. |
| Availability and transaction cost | Position eligibility, waiver priority or FAAB, claim-processing time, and any roster spot you would have to give up. |
| Timing and certainty | How much useful news may arrive before the slot locks, balanced against the risk of waiting too long and missing the deadline. |
These factors are decision aids, not a guarantee of points. NFL Fantasy calls its projections educated guesses and conjecture, not guarantees. Treat a projection as one input alongside role and league rules, not proof that a player will produce.

5. Make the change and verify the active lineup
- Choose the replacement who is eligible for the open slot and offers the strongest combination of likely opportunity, scoring fit, and matchup.
- If the player is not on your roster, complete the add or waiver move in time for your league’s transaction rules to take effect.
- Before that player’s lock, confirm the replacement is in the correct active slot and that the unavailable starter is no longer occupying it.
ESPN’s Quick Lineup feature uses rankings to fill eligible slots with players who have games scheduled. It may help arrange an ESPN lineup, but it does not replace checking eligibility, your scoring settings, or the specific status of an injured player. Consult your platform’s current lineup controls if you use another service.
