For your next scoring period, first confirm the quarterback’s status and your lineup deadline. Then compare every quarterback your league lets you add—including the injured player’s NFL backup—by expected playing time, current news, matchup, scoring fit, and acquisition cost. Make the move under your league’s waiver and roster rules; the backup is a sensible place to start, not an automatic best choice.
1. Confirm the injury news and your lineup deadline
Check current team and player news, then verify the quarterback’s status in your fantasy platform. An injury designation can change, and a player listed as questionable is not a guarantee that he will play or sit. Base the decision on the latest information available before your league’s lineup deadline.

Deadlines and lineup-lock rules depend on the platform and league. NFL.com’s 2025 official rules, for example, say NFL.com Fantasy managers may change a player’s active or reserve status before that player’s NFL team is scheduled to start. That is an NFL.com-specific rule, not a universal deadline. Check the rules for your own platform and league.
2. Identify quarterbacks you can actually add
Look at your league’s free-agent pool and waiver wire, and check any roster limits that could prevent a move. NFL.com defines the waiver wire as the process for getting players who are not currently on a roster in your fantasy league. A player who is already rostered is not available for a routine waiver or free-agent add.

How an add is awarded varies. Your league may use waiver priority, FAAB (free-agent acquisition budget), or immediate free-agent claims. A claim can fail if another manager has priority or bids more, and adding a quarterback may require you to drop someone. NFL.com’s beginner’s guide to fantasy football explains these acquisition mechanics; check your league’s settings for the actual process and timing.
3. Compare the backup with the rest of the available pool
Start by checking the injured quarterback’s NFL backup. NFL.com’s in-season roster-management guidance identifies replacing injured players as a primary use of the waiver wire and recommends looking for the injured player’s backup. Treat that as a first check, not a rule that the backup is always the right fantasy start. Compare him with every other quarterback your league allows you to add.

Expected role and playing time
Look for evidence that a candidate is likely to start and play enough to matter for your scoring period. A backup’s presence on the roster does not, by itself, establish that he will start or keep the job. Confirm the team’s latest announcement and relevant player news.
News and offensive role
Check for updates that could change the candidate’s availability or role. Consider the offense he will operate in and the work the team is likely to ask him to do, but avoid treating a general reputation or a past performance as proof of this week’s outlook.

Fit with your league’s scoring
Review your league’s scoring settings before choosing between candidates. The value of a quarterback’s likely production depends on how your league awards points; use rankings or projections that reflect those settings when available.

Waiver cost and roster trade-offs
Consider how much waiver priority or FAAB you are willing to spend, and which player you would have to drop to make room. The best available quarterback is not necessarily worth any bid or roster sacrifice: weigh the likely benefit for the coming scoring period against the cost under your league’s rules.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute4. Make the move and manage the injured player
- Check your league’s transaction method. Confirm whether the player is a free agent or on waivers, and whether claims use waiver priority, FAAB, or another league setting.
- Submit the add before the applicable deadline. Verify the processing time in your platform rather than assuming a universal waiver schedule.
- Confirm the roster has room. If the platform requires a corresponding drop, choose it before submitting the move.
- Set your lineup before it locks. Check that the replacement is active in the lineup, not merely on your roster.
- Choose what to do with the injured quarterback. Bench or drop him, or use an injured-reserve slot only if your league and platform permit it. Eligibility and roster rules vary; NFL.com’s cited rules do not establish a universal IR policy across platforms.
What this method can—and cannot—tell you
Use current player news, rankings, and league availability to make a week-specific choice. The NFL.com guides explain waiver mechanics and general roster management, but they do not establish current quarterback projections, a particular player’s status, or a matchup recommendation for your scoring period. No replacement strategy is supported here by a measured success rate, so treat the comparison as a decision process rather than a guarantee.
