How to compare cards for your household

A credit has value only if you would make the qualifying purchase anyway and are comfortable with the required booking channel. For a family, the total can also change when another adult needs a card or lounge access, or when guests incur per-visit charges.

- Trip details: Consider your home airport, usual destinations, family size, and whether the relevant lounge allows children or guests under the terms you need.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: a lower-fee option with a portal-dependent hotel credit
Chase announced on June 15, 2026 that Sapphire Preferred would retain its $95 annual fee while adding 3X points on gas and EV charging, 3X on vacation homes at named brands, a $100 annual hotel credit, and emergency evacuation and transportation coverage. The hotel credit applies to stays purchased through Chase Travel. The announcement also lists 5X on Chase Travel purchases, 2X on other travel, and 3X on dining.
For a family that expects to book a qualifying hotel through Chase Travel, the credit may help offset the fee. It should not be counted as cash savings if the household would not otherwise make that booking or prefers to reserve directly. The card’s gas and EV charging categories may be relevant to road-trip households, while the vacation-home category is limited to the named brands in the issuer’s terms.

How household point transfers work
Chase’s rewards agreement permits transfers in 1,000-point increments to participating travel-program accounts belonging to the cardholder or one additional household member who is an authorized user. The receiving travel program’s terms also apply, and transfer requests may take time to process. This is not a general permission to transfer points to any relative.
Capital One Venture X: distinguish free authorized users from lounge access
Capital One says Venture X permits up to four authorized users and does not charge to add them. The primary account holder remains responsible for authorized-user purchases. Adding a user does not automatically make every premium benefit free: the issuer separately lists an annual $125 lounge-access fee for each additional cardholder who receives that access.

The credit and portal-related earning are most relevant when your family is willing to book through that channel and would otherwise make the qualifying purchase.
Estimate lounge costs for the actual traveling group
Capital One’s guidance lists guest charges of $45 per visit at Capital One Lounges and $25 for guests aged 17 and under; children under two are free. Eligible cardholders and additional cardholders may receive up to two complimentary guests at Capital One Lounges and one at Capital One Landings per visit after the account has at least $75,000 in total spending during a calendar year. Priority Pass guest visits are listed at $35 per guest, and enrollment is required.

Citi Strata Premier: broad everyday categories, with a qualifying-stay threshold
Citi lists 3X points on air travel, hotels booked outside the specified Citi Travel category, restaurants, supermarkets, gas, and EV charging. It lists 10X on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through Citi Travel. The issuer also lists trip cancellation and interruption for common-carrier travel, trip delay, lost or damaged luggage, car-rental coverage, and no foreign transaction fees.

The $100 annual hotel benefit is available once per calendar year for a single stay costing at least $500 before taxes and fees. The stay must be booked through Citi Travel or by phone. That threshold and booking requirement can make the benefit less useful for families who usually book shorter stays or prefer to reserve directly. Do not count it at full value unless your travel plans are likely to meet both conditions.
Chase Sapphire Reserve: use the full household cost as the benchmark
Chase’s comparison page lists a $795 annual fee for Sapphire Reserve and $195 for each authorized user. A household considering this premium option should calculate the primary fee plus the cost of the additional cardholders it needs, then compare that total with benefits it expects to use. A headline value for benefits is not a substitute for that household-specific calculation.

- List your household’s recurring travel and card spending. Separate groceries, dining, gas or EV charging, airfare, hotels, and other travel so you can see which earning categories match actual purchases.
- Identify who needs a card and who needs premium access. An authorized user, an additional lounge-access cardholder, and a lounge guest can have different costs and conditions. For Venture X, adding an authorized user is free, but additional-cardholder lounge access is separately priced.
- Check every credit against your normal booking habits. The Chase Sapphire Preferred and Citi Strata Premier hotel benefits require bookings through the respective issuer’s travel channel or phone; Citi also requires a single stay of at least $500 before taxes and fees.
- Compare protections against your trip patterns. Review the issuer’s current coverage terms for the travel and rental-car situations your family is likely to face; a listed protection is not a substitute for checking its eligibility and exclusions.
- Review point use and sharing rules. Decide whether your household can make use of the card’s redemption and transfer options. For Chase Sapphire Preferred, the cited household transfer provision covers one additional household member who is an authorized user, subject to program terms.
- Recalculate before applying. Issuer terms and limited-time offers can change. Base a durable choice on fees, conditions, and benefits your family expects to use, not on a temporary offer or an assumed value for points.
