How to Choose a Domain Registrar: Security, Renewal Costs, and Transfers

Choose a registrar by comparing the renewal price for your exact domain extension, the security and privacy controls it documents, and the steps and restrictions involved in transferring the domain later. Treat the introductory price as only one part of the cost, and check the current provider terms before you buy.

Compare the costs you will actually pay

Look up prices for the exact top-level domain (TLD), such as .com, that you plan to register. Compare the standard renewal price—not only a discounted first year—and include transfer and restoration charges, plus any fees for privacy features. A low registration offer can become expensive if renewals or add-ons cost more.

Prices change. When accessed on October 4, 2026, Namecheap’s official page listed a .com transfer at $11.48 and renewal at $18.48. These are live listed prices, not guaranteed or permanent quotes; confirm the current amounts before deciding. Namecheap domain transfer pricing lists the transfer information. Cloudflare publishes registration, renewal, transfer, and restore pricing by extension, but no stable numeric amount is cited here. Check its current registrar price list for the extension you need.

Assess security and privacy controls

Check each registrar’s own documentation for account authentication and recovery, domain locks, DNSSEC support, and how it handles or redacts registration data. A feature list is useful, but it does not establish that a provider is categorically safest: the available information does not support an independent, comparable security ranking across registrars.

Cloudflare documents one-click DNSSEC activation, custom domain protection, and WHOIS redaction. These are examples of features to evaluate, not proof that Cloudflare is the best choice for every domain or account. Review the provider’s registrar documentation for current details.

Check your right and eligibility to transfer

ICANN’s updated Transfer Policy says: “Registered Name Holders must be able to transfer their domain name registrations between Registrars provided that the Gaining Registrar’s transfer process meets the minimum standards of this policy and that such transfer is not prohibited by ICANN or Registry policies.” The policy update is dated February 21, 2024, with contracted parties required to implement it by August 21, 2025. The registered name holder is the party authorized to approve or deny a transfer request. Read the ICANN Transfer Policy.

Transfer rights do not mean every domain is immediately eligible. ICANN consumer guidance describes a general 60-day restriction after a change to registrant contact information, though a registrar may offer an opt-out. Recent registration or transfer can also affect eligibility. Check the current policy, the registry rules for your TLD, and your provider’s account-specific instructions before planning a move. See ICANN’s transfer policy guidance and ICANN’s name-holder FAQs.

Know what a transfer involves

ICANN says the process is usually initiated with the gaining registrar—the provider you want to move to—and a registrar may not require a paid renewal as a condition of transfer. The losing provider may still have steps you must complete. For example, Namecheap’s instructions refer to an authorization or EPP code; the exact labels and process vary by provider and TLD. Consult ICANN’s transfer FAQs and the gaining registrar’s instructions.

Before starting, confirm you can access the account and email associated with the domain, check eligibility, and find out how to unlock the domain and obtain any required authorization code. Also ask what will happen to DNSSEC and DNS settings. Cloudflare says DNSSEC is disabled during its transfer process and can be enabled again afterward; plan for that change if you use its process. Details are in Cloudflare’s domain transfer documentation.

Decide whether bundled services suit your setup

A registrar, DNS host, website builder, and web host are different services, even when one company offers several of them. A bundle may be convenient, but price alone does not tell you whether the other services meet your needs or how portable your setup will be. Before choosing, identify which services are included, which you rely on, and what would need to change if you moved the domain.

Use this checklist before registering

  • Find the standard renewal price for your exact TLD, alongside registration, transfer, and restoration charges.
  • Check whether privacy or redaction costs extra and what registration data the provider exposes.
  • Verify documented account recovery, authentication, domain-lock, and DNSSEC options.
  • Read the transfer instructions and identify any eligibility restrictions, authorization-code steps, or DNSSEC changes.
  • Separate registrar services from DNS, hosting, and website-builder dependencies before deciding whether a bundle is a good fit.
